THE PROGRAM

It was Apple for a Teacher Day, and we had a full crowd.  Jim Stratton, our new Superintendent of Schools, started the introductions and each school principal introduced the new faculty at their school.  The new teachers, counselors, and principals had such interesting and varied backgrounds!  If they were new Kiwanians, each one could give a fascinating Craft Talk.  In fact, Prez Daryal invited all the new school staff to join our Club.  He even went so far as to suggest belonging to our Club could be a good career boost, since both the Superintendent of Schools and the Assistant Superintendent of Schools will be/are members.

The Prez sez . . .

·           Start planning now for your Tacky Top Day outfit on September 14th.

·           Next week two Dodger Baseball tickets for September 27th will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.  Check your calendar before the meeting.  The Dodgers will be playing the Arizona Diamondbacks.

·           Somebody goofed last week and had us memorizing an incorrect version of the new Kiwanis Defining Statement.  The fourth word is “GLOBAL” (not “International”).  Members will be “tested” next week to see if they have this new Defining Statement for Kiwanis memorized.

·           Thanks to Diane DellaValle’s hard work, the recent issue of Our Town magazine had a big article about our annual La Cañadan of the Year program.  There was a great picture of Shirley and Dick DeGrey (taken a few years ago) and a list of all prior recipients of the award.

·           The Club Installation Dinner has been moved from Descanso to Oakmont Country Club.  Remember we will be dark on Wednesday, September 28 at noon because the Installation Dinner will be held that Wednesday evening.

·           The Kiwanis District Convention in Fresno last weekend was a success.  Membership growth is the biggest longterm goal for all clubs.  The aim is to have one million Kiwanis members internationally by the year 2015.  The drive home through Dinuba (hometown of The Prez) was something to brag about.  But what? . . . we don’t know!

·           Our local Kiwanis Division 3 will have an Installation Dinner on September 19.  Laurel Patrick will be installed as the new Lt. Governor.

·           Definitions for the new members:  a Century Club donation is a donation of $100.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ü      Paul Westmoreland is still trying to cajole the last eight members to attend an InterClub.  Come on, folks!  You know who you are!!!  You have three opportunities next week to meet your obligation:  Tuesday noon and evening and Wednesday morning.  Call Paul to sign up.

ü      Karl Johnson reminded us to buy Ducks for the Great Duck Race.  This is a fundraiser sponsored by the Glendale Kiwanis Club, but our Foundation will receive half of all we collect.  Someone may win $1,000,000.  Also, our club is still collecting printer cartridges, cell phones, eyeglasses, and pull tabs; Karl collects these items at every lunch meeting.

ü      Nick Berkuta and Mary Gant reminded everyone to sell ads for the Wine and Gourmet Food program and consider what you can donate for the silent auction.  If you need more tickets for the event, contact Joan Peters or Mary Gant.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Jack Dawson was Happy he and his wife, Barbara, were still speaking to each other after a trip to Big Bear in his antique car.

Pat Anderson was Happy the Sport Chalet will be developing the northeast corner of Foothill and Angeles Crest.

Paul Westmoreland, who spent the weekend in Fresno at the Kiwanis Convention, was Happy he didn’t have to stay in Fresno or Dinuba.

Bill Scherkey gave a Sad Buck for Prez Daryal’s “crash and burn” performance with his balsa wood airplane during the race at the Kiwanis Convention.

Howard Backer celebrated the conception of his first great grandchild with a Happy Buck.  He and Rhoda already have eight children and ten grandchildren.

Karl Johnson wasn’t sure if he was Happy or Sad that the Prez overlooked his anniversary, but he gave a Buck anyway.

Linda Magarian gave a Gleeful Buck because she has a camera full of pictures of Dinuba.  The water tower is the most noticeable thing in town, and the high school doesn’t have a mascot.  They just call themselves the Dinuba Embers.

Nick Berkuta was Happy his new Kiwanis assignment was going so well.  Nick is collecting ads for the Wine and Gourmet Food program book, and not one person has turned him down yet.

Jim Reynolds was Happy about something, but the editor couldn’t hear him … which is hard to believe since the microphone was REALLY working today.

Doris Horwith had Happy Bucks for her recent vacation in Paris and Normandy.  Doris was raised in Egypt, but she was delighted to discover her French all came back right away.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  Piano tunes by Tom Burrows, who will play your favorite tune for a Tip for Kids in the glass bowl on top of the piano.  Ed Moulton leading This is My Country, Happy Birthday, Hi Neighbor and Bicycle Built for Two (although we couldn’t remember the words in the middle of the song).

Opening: flag salute by Jim Ackland and a lovely inspiration by Aaron Solomon, who gave a blessing which is traditionally said at the table by a parent while he has his hand on the head of his child.

Guests:  Lewis Hamilton, a local resident, was introduced by Howard Backer and grandson Jeff Gilfoy was introduced by proud granddad Tom Gilfoy.  Jeff just graduated from the University of Washington.

We’ve Missed You and We’re Glad To See You:  Pat Flynn and Patsy Christianson

Master of the Cash Box:  Aaron Solomon

Anniversaries:  Peter Racicot on August 17 and Carl Christensen celebrating 42 years today

Birthdays:  Deborah Weirick celebrated her birthday with a six hour horseback ride to the crest of the San Juan Mountains where she had a view of the Continental Divide.  Deborah wouldn’t tell her age but pledged $35 – a dollar for each year.  Linda Magarian also pledged a dollar for each year, but the total is a secret only Howard Backer will know.

Fines:  New member, Nick Berkuta, was the Secret Greeter.  All those who didn’t shake his hand had to pony up a buck.

Jelly Roll Revelation:  The sixth best college golfer in the state is the grandson of Doris Horwith.  Doris was caught by surprise and offered $5 for the Children of the World; later she raised her contribution to $20.

QuickieFred Schooley, Tom Burrows and Elizabeth Calcianno all had cute, kid-oriented one- and two-liners.

Fifty-Fifty Drawing:  Pat Anderson won the drawing again.  She will be selling tickets next week.
