The Prez sez . . .

*       Next week there will be a “test” to see who has learned the new Kiwanis International Defining Statement and Kiwanis MottoThe Prez was challenged – and he has already mastered both!  (The Defining Statement is at the very top of this newsletter and the Motto is just under the name of our Club.)

*       Start thinking about what you will wear for Tacky Top Day on September 14.  Prizes and accolades for the best examples of a Tacky Top The Prez suggested some members wouldn’t have to give this special day any thought as they actually qualify every week.  (That was a little harsh, Prez, don’t you think?)

*       Frank Ragazzi and his wife, Violet, have both been dealing with health issues, and Frank has regretfully withdrawn from the upcoming position of President-Elect.  Jim Ackland and his nominating committee will be searching for a replacement.  Hopefully, a candidate will be presented in the next few weeks and a vote can be held on September 14.  If you are interested, call Jim.  (This would be a great opportunity for a past president who “knows the ropes” to step in.  Many Kiwanis Clubs have members who have been President several times.)

*       Six tickets to the Laguna Festival of Arts were put up for bid; proceeds will be for the Children of the World.  Joan Peters snapped up two tickets for $25, and four tickets are left.  Call Daryal (who donated the tickets) if you are interested.

*       The Club received a postcard from Harriet Hammons, mailed from Finland.  She is on a six week tour but still thinking about us here at home.

*       Kudos to Ken Lowe and his LCHS Key Club who had a car wash fundraising on August 11.  The local paper had a good picture and an article.

*       Many thanks to Tom Burrows for the great piano music at the beginning of our meeting.  Make a special request and put a tip for the Children of the World in the glass bowl.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

*       Mary Gant reminded everyone that donations are still being sought for the Silent Auction at our Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event.  Some very fine auction items already donated include in-home gourmet food and wine dinner by Don Corbett, vacation home stay near Yosemite by Joel Smith, timeshare by Harriet Hammons, opera tickets, plumbing repairs, just to mention a few.

*       Joan Peters requested ads for the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event.  Nick Berkuta has agreed to take over this duty.  Nick is a new member; he is a tall, retired police officer.  You don’t want him coming after you, so call him right away to place your ad.

*       Bill Scherkey mentioned there were extra copies of the June and July board minutes for our Club and Foundation on the back table for anyone interested.

*       Bachy Bachmayer encouraged us to support Children’s Hospital by stuffing the table tubs..

*       Anthony Portantino reported there is a new proposed development for the northeast corner of Angeles Crest Highway and Foothill Blvd. which will be announced in the papers this week.  Preliminary meetings with the city have already been held.

FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

Carl Gieseke continues to improve and enjoys both phone calls and cards.

THE PROGRAM

Our very own Al Restivo took the podium and gave a very interesting talk on styles of behavior.  Al has a doctorate in Organizational Psychology and does a lot of management and executive coaching and training.  He described how each of us has a social and management style that we use when interacting with other people.  There are times when styles are compatible, and there are times when a great deal of stress is caused by incompatibility.  Al provided insights into the four basic behavioral styles, how people interact, and how one can learn to flex their style to create a comfort level when interacting with those who prefer a style that is different than their own.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Tom Burrows, Jack Dawson leading God Bless America, Hi Neighbor and Hail Kiwanis

Opening: flag salute by Mary Gant and inspiration by Al Restivo

Guests:  Anthony Portantino introduced his daughter, Sofia.  Joan Peters introduced Maria Chiu and Diane Dow from the Flintridge Prep Key Club.  They gave us a quick and interesting overview of their experience at the Key Club International Convention in Atlanta last month.

We’ve Missed You and We’re Glad To See You:  Charles Broberg

Master of the Cash Box:  Fred Schooley

Anniversaries:  Peter Racicot honored his anniversary with a Happy Buck.  Charles Broberg celebrated 43 years with Jeanne – who took care of him while he was sick and orchestrated the move into their new home at the same time.

Birthdays:  Don Corbett and Dave Spence both admitted to getting one year better.  Since they had each already joined the Century Club, Don donated two “gold” dollars and Dave (following the example of the mayor, he claimed) put in a dollar.

Fines:  The Prez caught a lot of Club members who weren’t wearing their Kiwanis pins.  This seems to be a lucrative weekly event, and Howard Backer is perversely happy since it keeps the Prez on budget for the year.

Jelly Roll Revelation:  Had something to do with Ken Lowe – sorry the editor couldn’t hear.  (The whispers in the “background” are louder than you think, folks!)

Frosty’s Challenge:  If you weren’t at the meeting you missed three extremely funny jokes.  Frosty, Tom Slaughter and Carl Christensen had us rolling on the floor.  The Prez had to pick a jury to decide on the winner, since the “clapping” vote was soooo close.  Tom’s safety story about avoiding bears took the prize.

The Quickie (replacing the Knock Knock Joke)Paul Westmoreland didn’t miss a beat, combined the old and the new and did a “Got’cha” on the Prez.
