ANNOUNCEMENTS

q       Jack Dawson told us to set aside September 17th for a church musical to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity and other local charities.

q       Raffle tickets are available for the San Gabriel Chapter of Habitat for Humanity.  $25 will give you a chance to win some really great prizes.

q       Ed Moulton really needs someone to help him pull the newspaper barrels back to the dock after our meeting each week.  He also asked everyone to please bring their papers.  The Glendale Association of Retarded use the newspapers to manufacture special cylinders which are purchased and shipped to Chicago and purchased by someone who used to live in La Cañada.  If there aren’t enough newspapers, the workers unroll the cylinders they have assembled and roll them over again, which is very demoralizing.

q       Paul Westmoreland reported our Club has once again qualified for the Kiwanis Round Robin award.  To qualify, our club must have an InterClub with every other club in our Kiwanis Division.  To qualify for a Super Round Robin, every member of our Club must attend at least one InterClub meeting during the year.  There are still ten Club members who have not attended an InterClub this year.  You know who you are, and you can be sure Paul will be calling you and calling you and calling you until you attend an InterClub meeting.

q       Paul also announced he was passing out tentative Committee Member rosters for our next Kiwanis year, which will start on October 1.

q       Karl Johnson reminded us to get donations for the Glendale Kiwanis Duck Race.  Our Club will receive half of the money we collect.  This is a fundraising project for our Literacy Program.

q       Mary Gant reminded us to put September 25th on our calendar.  Our biggest fundraiser, the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting is being held that Sunday afternoon.  Mary is collecting items for the Silent Auction.  She already has vacation homes in Hawaii and near Yosemite offered by Club members.  Call Mary with your offer or idea.

q       Bachy reminded us to support Children’s Hospital by using the tubs on our lunch tables.

q       Joan Peters was passing out envelopes to everyone.  The envelopes include detailed information about our Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting fundraising event.  Since this is our biggest fundraiser, everyone in the Club is expected to participate in some way.  There are many options.

q       The Prez said there will be no more unpopular Knock Knock jokes.  In addition to the Frosty Challenge, we will now have one Quickie each week.

NEW MEMBER INDUCTION

Bob Wallace inducted Nick Berkuta with the help of Nick’s sponsor, Mark AlexanderNick recently retired from the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department and has also been on  the Public Safety Commission for many years.  Mark brought Nick to our Special Guest Day, and now he is a Special New Member.  We welcomed Nick with a rousing, heartfelt rendition of You’re In Kiwanis Now.   Nick is probably very polite rather than tone deaf; our singing was terribly off key but he smiled through the entire song.  Welcome Nick!!!!

SURPRISE PRESENTATION

Anthony Portantino took guest Ben Frandsen by surprise.  Ben thought he was at our meeting because his dad was receiving a Kiwanis award.  Instead, Anthony presented the national Daily Point of Light award to Ben and read a letter of congratulation from President BushBen was nominated for this award by the La Cañada City Council because of his exceptional service to the community.  Ben was on the Youth City Council and was involved with many service projects with the Key Club, Boy Scouts and his church.  The entire Frandsen family joined us for lunch and enjoyed seeing Ben’s surprise.  What a proud bunch … Ben’s family and our entire Kiwanis Club!  We had a taste of just how special Ben is when he extemporaneously gave us an articulate overview of his activities leading up to this award and his future plans.  Ben is leaving for Brigham Young University soon and then will go on a mission for his church.

THE PROGRAM

A Honeymoon with My Brother is a book (in it’s seventh printing since February), a soon-to-be movie, and the real life experience of Franz Wisner and his brother, Kurt.  Franz’ fiancée dumped him days before their large wedding.  He survived with the support of many friends who gathered together on the day of the wedding to celebrate without the bride.  Since he couldn’t get a refund, Franz took his younger brother on the planned Honeymoon Trip to Costa Rica.  They had such a great time and enjoyed getting to know each other so much, they decided to sell everything they owned and go traveling around the world.  Fifty three countries and two years later they came home and considered going back to their old professions.  Instead, Franz and Kurt chose to stick to what they were enjoying so much.  Franz wrote a book about their experiences and observations.  A most enjoyable and heartwarming story!  Many of us stayed after the meeting to buy a book.   Franz and Kurt were charming and took time to write a personal message in each book.  Watch for their interview on Oprah coming up in September.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Linda Magarian  … had one Happy Buck for her enjoyment at Matt Regan’s absolutely fabulous wedding and a second Happy Buck for her first visit to Chicago.  Linda has added Chicago as one of her favorite cities and is looking forward to another visit.

Jim Edwards … had two Happy Bucks because Nick Berkuta is joining our Club.  Nick has been Jim’s mentor since before Jim ran for the LCF City Council.

Bill Watts … had a Happy Buck because his wife, Margaret, is home from the Santa Barbara hospital where she was operated on after breaking her hip.  Bill had a Sad Buck because the table are too close together.

Dave Spence … had Happy Bucks for Pat Anderson because she has a new Cadillac – her first new car in 26 years!

Clyde Hemphill … had a Sad  Buck for Joel Smith who thought every last detail of the Soap Box Derby would be completed this week.

Mark Alexander … was very Happy because both of his invitees to our Special Guest Day have joined our Club.  Nick Berkuta and Aaron Solomon

Joel Smith  … further explained Clyde’s Sad Buck.  The three crates carrying our three Soap Box Derby cars home from Ohio were supposed to be delivered this week, but have turned up lost.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Tom Burrows, Ed Moulton leading America the Beautiful, Hi Neighbor and You’re in Kiwanis Now.

Opening: flag salute by Fred Schooley and inspiration by Scott Fuller

Guests:  In addition to the Frandsen family, Jim Stratton joined us as the guest of Mike Leininger.  Jim is the new Superintendent of the LCF schools and a prospective member of our Club.  Martha Crockett  came with her hubby, Hal.  We also had a reporter from the Valley Sun join us.

We’ve Missed You and We’re Glad To See You:

Master of the Cash Box:  Nick Berkuta (who was threatened with a permanent job by the Prez)

Anniversaries:  Jim Ackland and his wife, Jo, celebrated 57 years of marriage on August 7th – which was worth a Century Club to Jim.  John Parady and Bobbie have been married for 39 years.  Hal Crockett couldn’t wait until the end of the month to tell us he and Martha will celebrate their 63rd anniversary on August 29.  They are still so romantic.  Hal told us they were in San Diego last weekend and stood on the beach where Hal proposed and kissed her.

Birthdays:  Don Corbett came in late, but just in time to get caught by Prez Daryal.  Don got a deferment until next week since his birthday isn’t until then.

Jelly Roll Revelation:  Jelly Roll selected the winners of the Lotta Leg Day event.  White-est (most white?) legs went to Howard Backer, gnarliest legs were attached to Ed Moulton, Melinda Thompson received the racing stripes award, Bob Wallace had the most muscular legs, the best shaved legs went to Diane DellaValle (only a male giraffe would say “best shaved legs” instead of “shapeliest legs”), Jack Dawson had the shortest legs, and Bill Scherkey received an award for the most glamorous legs.

Fifty-Fifty Drawing:  Can you believe it?!!  Our Treasurer, Howard Backer, won again!
