The Prez sez . . .

The 2005 – 2006 Installation Dinner is scheduled for the evening of Wed., September 28, 2005.  We will be dark at noon, and your normal noon meal charge will be applied to the cost of the dinner.  More to follow as we get closer to the event.

Our Immediate Past Lt. Gov., Joe Thompson, presented the special Distinguished Club Award for Kiwanis year 2003 – 2004 including the Distinguished Administration Award, Distinguished Service Award, the Education Award, the Distinguished President, Jim Ackland, and Distinguished Secretary, Howard Backer.  These are great honors for our club and its distinguished leaders.

The Prez reminded everyone about the upcoming Kiwanis Fresno Convention.  To date, Daryal & Mary Gant, Paul Westmoreland, and Bill Scherkey will be attending.  It’s not too late to take advantage of this opportunity to attend the convention and learn more about Kiwanis.

Mark your calendar for the Wednesday, August 3 noon meeting.  Our guest speaker will be TV Journalist, Stan Chambers.  This will be a great opportunity to invite a guest (potential Kiwanian).  Those of us who invited guests to the recent Special Guest Day luncheon should use this meeting to follow up.  Invite your previous guests back and invite those who couldn’t attend last month.

August 10 has been designated “Lot-Of –Leg Day” by our Prez, and great prizes will be awarded in several leggy categories … to be announced.  Please, No Speedo’s!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Paul Westmoreland scheduled two Inter-Club opportunities.  One scheduled for tonight at the Eagle Rock Club and a next Wednesday lunch meeting at the Glendale Gateway club.

FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

Charles Broberg is feeling fine, and his recovery is going very well.

Carl Gieseke mending a fractured hip.

Jim Ackland is still taking it easy, and would appreciate a call.

The funeral service for Bob Frank’s father is scheduled for 4pm on Thursday, July 21 at the La Cañada Presbyterian Church.

THE PROGRAM

Linda Johnson talked about the financial situation that the Foothill Summer Theatre is now experiencing.  She made an impassioned plea for support and had one of the cast members make still another impassioned plea.  This only left time for one song from this year’s play, Sweeney Todd.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Clyde gave a Happy Buck for the great job Jack Dawson did fixing up our Club Barbeque!

Mark Alexander gave a Gossip Buck on behalf of Anthony Portantino who was not present because he was taking two of Mark’s employees out to lunch.

Howard Backer gave an Information Buck.  He gave Clyde information before he asked for it.

George Lutes have a Good News/Bad News Buck.  Seems he played in a Golf Tournament at a high elevation, and found that he could drive a ball farther (good news).  But, had a hard time walking to it (bad news).

Pat Anderson gave Happy Bucks for the La Cañada Farmers Market that is undergoing a face-lift, and adding lots of new vendors.  Also, working to improve parking by using spaces at the Citizens Business Bank.   The new parking will not be immediately available – need to work out some Insurance issues.

Joe Thompson gave a Happy Buck for our distinguished club awards

Tom Slaughter, our Sgt. At Arms likes the bell.  Tom, you got to get out more!

FACTS AND FICTION

  • Music:  piano tunes by Tom Burrows, Ed Moulton leading You’re a Grand Old Flag , Welcome Welcome, Happy Birthday, Hi Neighbor and Hail Kiwanis

  • Opening: flag salute by Scott Fuller and inspiration by Diane DellaValle.

  • Guests:  Joe Thompson and some of the cast members from the Foothill Summer Theatre were serenaded to the tune of Hi Neighbor led by Ed.

  • Master of the Cash Box: Tom Slaughter

  • Anniversaries: Mel Wilson is celebrating his 56th. year and donated $56 to the children of the world.

  • Birthdays:  Frosty Boyd - Turns out he had already paid his fine and been recognized.  Hey, Prez - one per year is enough!

  • Tom Borrows turned 77, and gave a fine.

  • Joel Smith also got ambushed and gave a dollar for each year, but never mentioned how many that would be.  Tough to audit.

  • Jelly Roll Revelation:  Apparently,  Jelly Roll has already seen Tom Gilfoy showing a Lot-of-Leg.  It cost him $20.  Tom, hang in there!  The big day is coming, and you may get a huge prize!

  • The secret greater, Jack Dawson, arrived late, and almost everyone in attendance had to pay.  Could we have been had?

  • Frosty’s Challenge:  10 Commandments story.  Not bad, but no cigar!  Dr. Al Perry Sr. -two ladies at a boring meeting.  Mel Wilson and his airport security dogAnd the winner is Dr. Perry!

  • Knock Knock JokeThe Prez really scraped the bottom of the barrel with this one.  Clyde made a very meager attempt to save the day and fell short.   Keep up the good work!
