The Prez sez . . .

*      Many thanks to Harriet Hammons and crew for the enjoyable Summer Social held last Sunday on the lovely front lawn of Paul Toffel’s house.

Get ready for Lotta Leg Day on August 10th.  Costumes and outfits are almost required.  Only speedos will be turned away at the door.  Prizes will be presented for all types of categories.

Thanks to Frank Ragazzi for filling in at the meeting last week while Paul Westmoreland and the Prez and Mary Gant attended the International Kiwanis Convention in Hawaii.  The leadership was dynamic and there was lots of information to bring home to the Club.

Kiwanis “We Build” motto has been changed to “Serving the Children of the World.”

Kiwanis has a new Defining Statement:  Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to caring for the world, one child and one community at a time.

International Kiwanis has a goal of increasing membership from 300,000 to 1,000,000 members by 2010.

He was gifted by Harriet Hammons with the Flamingo T-Shirt he was wearing and a plastic chirping Flamingo on the end of a stick.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Paul Westmoreland commended Prez Daryal on accepting the Kiwanis position of Division Three Lt. Governor for the 2006/2007 Kiwanis year.  We are one of twelve Kiwanis Clubs in Division Three, which covers Glendale, Eagle Rock, Highland Park, and our Crescenta Valley.

  • Jack Dawson has been fixing up our trailer barbeque and one of the things it needed was new tires.  Member Paul Bobzin, who is our La Cañada Bridgestone/Firestone Tire Dealer, generously donated new tires.  Jack reminded us to support our own members in our business dealings.

  • Pat Anderson reminded us of the upcoming Going to the Dogs picnic on July 28; this is the LCF Chamber mixer for July and is being held at Woody Walker’s veterinary clinic.  Pat also let us know there will be a half dozen or so street repair projects going on in LCF during the next few months.  Driving around town may be very inconvenient for several months, but the pain will all be over at once.

  • Paul Westmoreland announced another InterClub scheduled for next Wednesday evening at the Eagle Rock Kiwanis Club.

  • Bachy Bachmeyer reminded us to support Children’s Hospital.

  • Howard Backer announced that our Club can now accept credit card payments.  If you want to pay your Kiwanis bill that way, call Howard and he will explain the procedure.

He lives in La Cañada and is being sponsored by Chuck Gulick and Jack Dawson.  Fred Schooley is a retired Program Manager. He lives in Glendale and is sponsored by George Lutes.

CRAFT TALK by Peter Racicot

Peter grew up in a small town on the border of Vermont that was founded by soldiers during the Revolutionary War.  It took about 200 years before the town found out it was actually in Canada and not the U.S.  Peter lived on a farm with his grandparents.  Milking sixty head of cattle by hand taught him a good work ethic.  Peter learned about civic responsibility from his grandfather who was the patriarch of the town and was responsible for bringing electricity to the town in the 50’s!  He left the farm to go to high school in Montreal and then moved to Los Angeles in 1961.  After a casual relationship with college for several years, Peter was drafted in 1966 and served in Viet Nam as a combat MP.  He is a Disabled American Veteran and has been very active in that organization for many years.  Peter became serious about college after he was discharged and graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with majors in Urban Planning and Architecture.  Peter became interested in Kiwanis when his daughter was a Terrific Kid.  He and his wife, Linda Mills, have a blended family with five children.  They live just four doors away from Ed Moulton, who is Peter’s sponsor.  Linda is a criminal prosecutor and went to school at USC.  Peter belongs to the Episcopal Church of Angels in Pasadena.  It’s lucky Peter is semi-retired, as he has a list of hobbies a mile long.  He loves photography, old cars and vehicles (he keeps an old tractor in his front yard just in case he needs one), surfing, player pianos, and dogs … just to name a few.  But Peter assured us he has plenty of time for Kiwanis and wants to be very active.  Welcome, Peter!!!

THE PROGRAM

Cathy Keen is a member of the Glendale Kiwanis Club and her presentation today grew out of her Craft Talk for her Glendale Club.  Cathy was a stewardess for American Airlines for eleven years during the time when hair length was measured with a ruler and every aspect of dress and decorum was tightly regulated.  It was apparent Cathy was a real “people person” as she had great stories about people she met as a stewardess who made a big impact on her life.  Her description of watching the caskets of Viet Nam servicemen being unloaded from the underbelly of the planes was especially poignant.
