No, Jack is correct!!!!! The Fresno Scraper
transformed the backbreaking labor of land leveling, ditch
digging and road and railroad building. It helped to change
the way that earth could be scraped, moved, dumped and
leveled. The "Fresno" and its variants made possible the
early-day irrigation canals, ditches, and level fields in
the Central Valley of California, as well as the
construction of dams, roads and railroad right-of-ways. It
indeed was the forerunner and provided the basis for the
development of the modem day earth-moving scraper. For more
information click: There is also a Fresno city in Ohio
and one in Texas.

CRAFT TALK by Dang
Pham
Dang was born
in Saigon in 1975. His father was being held in a Communist
concentration camp “relearning everything he knew.” That
was a euphemism for indoctrination in Communism. Dang
told us the Communists were afraid of knowledge and also
very corrupt, so bribes were a way of life. Dang and
the rest of his family lived with his grandparents. Dang
was in prison twice before he was eight years old – once
for a day and the second time for a month. His family made
six attempts to escape Viet Nam and were finally successful
on their seventh try. They left the country on a boat but
had no food or water. After five or six days on the ocean,
fishermen from Indonesia helped them with food and water,
saving their lives. Dang’s family moved to the
United States when he was eight years old and he graduated
from high school in Arcadia. At UCLA he majored in math and
applied science and had several very interesting jobs after
graduating. Dang currently has his own business
helping people convert media from VHS to DVD format. He is
also exploring opportunities to build a business as a
financial planner. We are so happy to have you join our
Kiwanis Club, Dang, and your life story was a great
reminder today of how precious our freedom is in this
country. A great Craft Talk for the week of the Fourth of
July.
THE PROGRAM
Bruce Sievers
provided the perfect program for this Fourth of July week.
He is the poet who wrote “An American in Love with His
Country.” Having a poet recite his own work is a very
special treat, and Bruce’s poems are exceptionally uplifting
and thoughtful. He is a joyful American and is able to put
into words what many of us feel but cannot say well. Bruce
has presented his poetry program for several presidents and
wrote a special poem for Bob Hope as a present from
Dolores. He has recently been nominated for next year’s
U.S. Poet Laureate.
