The Vice Prez sez . . .

The Prez is in Hawaii working hard at the Kiwanis International Convention, so Frank Ragazzi took over and did a fine job.

Don’t forget our Club and Foundation Board meetings tomorrow night.  Officers, board members, and committee chairs are strongly encouraged to attend.  Everyone is welcome!

The Kiwanis District Convention is coming up soon.  The dates are August 18-21.  The place is Fresno.  Check your calendar and see if you can attend!  *

Jack Dawson offered the Club $5 if anyone knew what a “fresno” is.   No one had the answer, so Jack told us it is a scoop (or something) pulled by a horse.   The editor’s two volume dictionary doesn’t even list “fresno” as a word, so maybe Jack was pulling our collective leg..

Webmaster Note: No, Jack is correct!!!!!  The Fresno Scraper transformed the backbreaking labor of land leveling, ditch digging and road and railroad building. It helped to change the way that earth could be scraped, moved, dumped and leveled. The "Fresno" and its variants made possible the early-day irrigation canals, ditches, and level fields in the Central Valley of California, as well as the construction of dams, roads and railroad right-of-ways. It indeed was the forerunner and provided the basis for the development of the modem day earth-moving scraper. For more information click:  There is also a Fresno city in Ohio and one in Texas. http://valleyhistory.org/FindingAids/FresnoScraper/FresnoScraper.html

ANNOUNCEMENTS

1           Bill Scherkey requested Committee Reports for the month of June from all Committee Chairs.

2           Pat Anderson announced the next LCF Chamber Mixer on July 28th.   The mixer will be held at the La Cañada Pet Clinic, which is celebrating it’s 40th year in business.  Bring your dogs and a picnic blanket.

3           Clyde Hemphill reminded everyone to come to the Summer Social this Sunday at the home of Paul Toffel.  Ed Moulton chimed in that Tom Burrows will be there with his electronic keyboard and our Kiwanis songbook; we’ll really be able to serenade Paul’s neighbors.

4           Bachy Bachmeyer requested contributions for Children’s Hospital.

FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

Jim Ackland is still at home, although he is feeling better.  Charles Broberg made an unexpected trip to the hospital.  One lung was removed due to a cancerous growth, but prognosis is good and he will not need chemo.

CRAFT TALK by Dang Pham

Dang was born in Saigon in 1975.  His father was being held in a Communist concentration camp “relearning everything he knew.”  That was a euphemism for indoctrination in Communism.  Dang told us the Communists were afraid of knowledge and also very corrupt, so bribes were a way of life.  Dang and the rest of his family lived with his grandparents.  Dang was in prison twice before he was eight years old – once for a day and the second time for a month.  His family made six attempts to escape Viet Nam and were finally successful on their seventh try.  They left the country on a boat but had no food or water.  After five or six days on the ocean, fishermen from Indonesia helped them with food and water, saving their lives.  Dang’s family moved to the United States when he was eight years old and he graduated from high school in Arcadia.  At UCLA he majored in math and applied science and had several very interesting jobs after graduating.  Dang currently has his own business helping people convert media from VHS to DVD format.  He is also exploring opportunities to build a business as a financial planner.   We are so happy to have you join our Kiwanis Club, Dang, and your life story was a great reminder today of how precious our freedom is in this country.  A great Craft Talk for the week of the Fourth of July.

THE PROGRAM

Bruce Sievers provided the perfect program for this Fourth of July week.  He is the poet who wrote “An American in Love with His Country.”  Having a poet recite his own work is a very special treat, and Bruce’s poems are exceptionally uplifting and thoughtful.  He is a joyful American and is able to put into words what many of us feel but cannot say well.  Bruce has presented his poetry program for several presidents and wrote a special poem for Bob Hope as a present from Dolores.  He has recently been nominated for next year’s U.S. Poet Laureate.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Diane DellaValle … Serendipity Buck because she ran across a book at an estate sale called “The Traveler” which was published in 1889.  Inside the front cover of this child’s book it said “Donated by the La Cañada Kiwanis.”

Tom Gilfoy … Happy Buck for the enjoyable piano music provided by Tom Burroughs.

George Lutes … Happy Buck because he’ll be in Mammoth playing golf in a few days.

Doris Horwith  … Happy Buck looking forward to her trip to France in 2 ½ weeks.

Jim Reynolds … Happy Buck for the marvelous music and fireworks at the Rose Bowl on July 4th.

Pat Anderson … Happy Buck because she was on site to witness the Deep Impact at JPL.
