FROSTY’S SLA REPORT
No news is good news!
CRAFT TALK BY JOHN
PARODY
John didn’t reveal his
age, but started out by telling us he was born in 1939 in
Inglewood, California shortly after his twin sister. Always
the gentleman, it was “ladies first.” He grew up in the San
Gabriel Valley and was drafted during the Korean War before
completing college. On his way to Korea, he stopped in
Hawaii and was never able to get off the island. After
spending two years in Hawaii completing his service
obligation, John obtained his BS degree in Management
Science from Cal State LA. His first job was in the field
of computers (in the era of vacuum tubes). John spent most
of the rest of his career specializing in Information
Technology. Somewhere along the way he went back to school
and earned a Masters Degree at USC. John’s last job before
he retired (about a year ago) was with Kelly Blue Book. We
must have made John nervous, because he forgot to tell us
about his personal life. It cost John a Happy Buck to tell
us 1) he has three children who have all graduated from
college, and 2) he just achieved a life long dream of
getting his private pilot’s license. WELCOME, JOHN!!!
PRESENTATION
Kiwanis International presents the prestigious Legacy
Fellowship to any person who makes a provision in their will
or trust to fund the Kiwanis International Foundation. The
William A. Dunlap Fellowship is a Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha
District Foundation honor initiated by a donation of
$1,000. Pat Anderson made a presentation of both
Fellowships to Daryal Gant, our illustrious Prez. As a part
of the presentation, Pat related a very interesting meeting
she had with Jelly Roll where she learned a few things about
our Prez. “As a kid he was a poor, dusty, shy Okie. While
attending high school in beautiful downtown Dinuba he became
aware of community organizations when a teacher suggested he
apply for a scholarship from the Oakland Scottish Rite. He
did. He won. It was a four year scholarship to UCLA where
he received a BS in Business, Jan. 1956. Over the next six
months all of that BS was tested during his stint in the
Army as a 2nd Lt in Virginia where he met Mary,
his wife. Using all the skills of his BS degree, he
convinced her to come to California with him and support him
while he worked on his Masterful BS degree from UCLA, which
he earned in 1957. Behind every great man there is an even
greater woman. In October Mary will have been the wind
beneath Daryal’s wings for 49 years. Daryal took his BS to
JPL and dazzled them for 37 years before retiring in 1999 as
Director of Business Affairs (a fancy title for BS
Director). In December of that year Daryal joined Kiwanis
under the sponsorship of Joel Smith. Daryal will tell you
that all this BS simply means Better Spouse. Jelly Roll
isn’t buying it! Do you?
THE PROGRAM
Stephen Ellis
challenged each of us open our minds as he Explained the
Unexplained. He has spent many years on a
non-scientific search for common sense answers to questions
science has been unable to answer or about which science has
given us unreasonable answers. The following excerpt from
the preface of Stephen’s book, Explaining the Unexplained,
summarizes his talk quite well:
“Our world is replete
with unexplained things. Millions of questions are asked
every day about such things as religion, ghosts, flying
saucers, paranormal phenomena, our very place in the cosmos,
etc. The answers we are given to many of these questions
may sound reasonable at first glance, but when you start to
look at them closely, the term “reasonable” no longer
applies. In fact, some of the answers we get to our
questions defy our common sense.”
At the end of his
program, Stephen Ellis offered everyone a free copy of his
book … as long as they promised to read the book from cover
to cover.
HAPPY & SAD BUCKS
Diane DellaValle
… Happy that although the “reward for service is the
act itself,” as a direct result of her new relationships
with the local newspapers as Publicity Chair for our Club,
she was featured in a big second page article this week in
the Record Ledger.
Clyde Hemphill
… Happy the June Social last Friday evening was so
much fun, thanks to Harriet Hammons great planning
and execution.
Joel Smith …
Happy for all the help at the Soap Box Derby. Over
forty member of our Club participated plus an additional 100
community volunteers.
Laurel Patric …
Happy for her recent weekend in Cambria.
Lloyd Welch …
Sad he will not be back at a Wednesday lunch meeting
until September, but Happy because he is going to San
Diego for six weeks and then on to Australia.
Pat Flynn …
Happy to be back.
Carl Christensen
… Sad he didn’t get an award from the Prez
when he won the Frosty Challenge last week.
Bachy Bachmeyer
… Happy for a five day reunion he and his daughter
attended in the northeast corner of South Dakota, and extra
Happy a terrible tornado passed through the town a
few days before they arrived.

Also,

Laurel
and
Diane
contributed to the Children of the World.
Frosty’s Challenge:
Frank Ragazzi and Mel Wilson took on Frosty
