CRAFT TALK BY LINDA MAGARIAN

Linda spent her first six years on a farm near Fresno.  Both her father and grandfather were farmers, and wandering through the vineyards and orchards was the beginning of her wanderlust.  Linda’s family moved into town and she started school in Fresno.  She graduated from Fresno State, married, and started teaching in Fresno.  A move to Los Angeles and a teaching position in the Montebello School District was followed by the birth of her son, MatthewLinda’s husband was hired as a coach at LCHS, and that is how she ended up living in lovely La Cañada.  Linda enjoyed being a mom and took a break from teaching for several years.  Then, as a single mom, she started teaching again and went back to school to get her Masters Degree.  Linda has traveled often and far.  She recently returned from a trip to Thailand.  Pres Daryal thanked her for her Craft Talk and commented he was pleased that she came from a place near Dinuba.

The Prez sez . . .

Special Guest Day will be here in four weeks and invitations to the Special Guests must go out in the next week.  Every Club Member has been asked to submit the names of at least two people who might possibly be interested in joining our Kiwanis Club.  You will find a Pink Flamingo on your lawn if you don’t send the Prez at least one name.  Make your submission to the Prez this week … by email, fax, phone, regular mail.

*     The June Board Meetings for our Club and Foundation are tomorrow evening at 7 p.m.

*     Many thanks to Joel Smith for his successful chairmanship of the Soap Box Derby last Saturday.

*     And more thanks to Mike Leininger for heading up our Hamburger Stand on Monday in Memorial Park.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

1 -  Pat Anderson provided the details for three upcoming Chamber events:  June 8 - Breakfast meeting at The Dish at 8 a.m.;  June 23 - Tri-Chamber Mixer at the Valley Sun at 5:30 p.m.; September 13 -  Foothills Community Business Expo at Verdugo Hills Hospital.

2 -  Bill Scherkey announced that the May Board Meeting Minutes have been sent to all board members and committee chairs.  Bill also requested the monthly reports from all committee chairmen.

3 -  Harriet Hammons reminded everyone about the two upcoming Socials on June 10 and July 10.  Harriet also talked about our literacy program.  Two bags of books have been purchased from Once Upon a Time (with a generous 15% discount from owner Maureen).  One bag will go to Roscoe Elementary School where Howard Backer’s daughter teaches, and the second bag will go to Verdugo Woodlands Elementary School where Harriet’s daughter is a teacher.

4 -  Bachy Bachmayer reminded everyone to support Children’s Hospital.

5 -  Joel Smith thanked everyone who supported the Soap Box Derby.  Joel also requested a call if you know the owner or manager of a local restaurant.  He is collecting this contact information for the Gourmet Food portion of our September fundraiser.

6 -  Carl Christensen announced the Hamburger Stand grossed over $1,600 on Monday.  He auctioned off the two leftover packages of hamburger meat, and Elizabeth Calciano and Jack Dawson were the highest bidders.

FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

Bill Watts is still trying to regain his strength.  Ken Lowe had a cataract removed, and Paul Westmoreland had his nose out of joint.

THE PROGRAM

Ed Kline is a civil and traffic engineer.  As a hobby, he has collected pictures of funny traffic signs all over the USA and Canada.  He had some beautiful scenery slides among the many slides of crazy traffic signs.
