*   Special Guest Day is coming up and each member will receive a letter soon explaining this proposed event, watch your mail.  This will be a way to increase our membership.

  • Board Action – Mike Lininger and Mary Gant proposed the  gifting of Safety Chairs to each of the local high schools.  La Cañada High, St. Francis, Flintridge Prep and Flintridge Sacred      Heart.  These are to be used at sporting events and practice to       safely remove an injured player from the field of play.  Each school has enthusiastically agreed that these would be a great additions to their sports programs.  The chairs will have the words:  Donated by:  Kiwanis Club of La Cañada on their backs.

  • White Board – At each meeting from today forward there will be a white board with the notes   received from others.  Example of those there today were thank you notes from LCF  Tournament of Roses for our annual donation and a note from Joe Thompson thanking our club for his being names “La Cañadian of the Year.”  Members are encouraged to take time to read them.

  •  Our club in conjunction with the A.M. Club will sponsor a new club somewhere in the world under the umbrella of Kiwanis International.

  • Welcome back to Carl Christensen and Bill WattsCarl had his hip replaced one week ago today and Bill recovered from double pneumonia from a couple of weeks ago.

 Quote

“One small deed accomplished is greater than a large deed planned”

 Sappiest Hat Day

There was a great display throughout the club and so to be fair the serve staff was asked to come in and choose their favorites;  Bill Watts, Mary Gant and Bob Martin each received a Kiwanis Buck.  One Kiwanian complained that Paul Westmoreland and Bachy Backmayer were robbed because their hats were so outstanding.

Our Summer Social will be July 11 at the Toffel’s lovely home in the afternoon.

2 -  Joel Smith reminded us that in three weeks he would no longer get up and ask for volunteers for the Soap Box Derby.  However, he does need volunteers for that event which is in 2 ½ weeks!

FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

Frosty said that most of his report had been given for him with the recognition of Bill Watts and Carl Christenson's return to the club. Frosty will find out more details regarding Don Davidson's wife's death.

 NEW MEMBER INDUCTION

Bob Wallace introduced Peter Racicot who is a consultant and owns his own business, Sunray Environmental.  Peter’s sponsor is Ed Moulton.  It was Peter’s son, Joe, who was that handsome Marine who joined us for lunch last week.  Peter is also the father of a Terrific Kid.

Dang Pham was introduced; he is sponsored by Mary Gant and Karl Johnson.  Another entrepreneur who just opened a new business last week in Montrose, Mon Cadeau, that specializes in conversion of home videos to DVD’s.  Dang’s home is in Montrose, he is a UCLA graduate, a Chamber Ambassador, a Descanso docent and will begin teaching chess at the Roger Barkley Center in June.

Two fine additions to our club, welcome Peter and Dang.

 THE PROGRAM

Northwest China/Tibet was presented by Pierre Odier a retired Hoover High School teacher.  Peirre was born in Lucerne, Switzerland but spent most of his life in the United States.  Pierre received the high honor of being named Outstanding Teacher of the Year while at Hoover.  Being a teacher allowed Pierre to travel extensively.  He prefers the back roads and the ordinary people to cities that are well known.  We heard many interesting facts and saw wonderful slides of the countries customs and habits.  We even got to see a Cricket Market.  A fascinating presentation.

 HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Sad  - Joel Smith was sad because Dick Barley was out of the room and we didn’t sing Hi Neighbor to him.

… Happy – Frosty Boyd announced the arrival of great-grandson, Matthew, weighing in at 7             pounds and 20” long, their first great-grandchild so Frosty generously donated $90 (there was a complicated calculation to get to this amount and competed with some of his humor.)

Happy – Vic Ledgerton announced that ‘Day at the Races’ will become an annual event for the Glendale Club and thanked our club for supporting them this year.

Happy – Clyde Hemphill is happy for Joel Smith’s good health and wishes him continued good    health since Joel is SBD Director and if Joel becomes ill the Assistant Derby Director will have to take over, Clyde!

Sad  - Mary Gant fined the Prez for his statement last week that ‘no women participated in  Bad

Hair Day.’  Mary stated that she had walked around with orange hair all day.  Daryal had to   give up $5.

Sad – Doris Horwith announced the passing of Don Davidson’s wife who had an inoperable brain  tumor.

Happy – Dick Braley, president-elect of the A. M. club thanked our club for choosing Joe

Thompson as La Cañadian of the Year stating that this is a fine tradition that our club has.

Dick further thanked us for all the good things our club does in the area.

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Martha Crockett, in Ed Moulton’s absence Jack Dawson, standing on a chair on the podium, lead us in America the Beautiful , Welcome,  Welcome Back, Happy Birthday, Hi Neighbor and Hail Kiwanis

Opening: flag salute by George Lutes and inspiration by Harriett Hammons.

Guests:  Vic Ledgerton and Dick Barley

Master of the Cash Box:  Bob Martin

Birthdays:  Carl Christensen decided that since he had a new birthday, a new hip and a new grandchild that he would join the Century Club.

Chuck Gulick joined the Century Club for getting older and older.

Carl Gieseke said he had an anniversary and birthday, so he, too, joined the Century Club

Fines:  A fine free meeting – mark it on your calendar.

Jelly Roll Revelation:  the La Cañada School Board met and there was a photo and an article

mentioning Mike Lininger who was quoted for handily handling the controversy surrounding

the play ‘Bat Boy’ but nowhere was Kiwanis mentioned.  Mike gave $20 for ‘Children of the

World.’  It was then questioned if it would have been appropriate for Kiwanis to have even

been mentioned at the same time as ‘Bat Boy!’

Fifty-Fifty Drawing:  Bill Watts was big winner.
