THE PROGRAM

It was the day for La Cañadan of the Year, and Karl Johnson and Carl Christensen did a great job planning the tribute to Joe Thompson.  Van de Kamp Hall was full to overflowing … so many people there to honor Joe Thompson as the 2004 La Cañadan of the Year.  After a delicious lunch, Prez Daryal opened the meeting, Ed Moulton reached a new height (standing on a chair) and led God Bless America, Paul Westmoreland led the flag salute, and Al Restivo gave the invocation.  Jerry Healy, our MC, began the ceremonies by introducing the many prior La Cañadans of the Year who were in the audience.  A special guest just home from Iraq, Marine Corps Corporal Racicot,  was introduced next and received standing applause.  The focus then turned to our honored guest as Karl Johnson gave us Joe’s biography.  Karl included many interesting details, but the thumbnail history is that Joe spent his childhood in Glendale, attended USC, and then served in the Navy before moving his family up the hill to La Cañada.  Karl’s introduction set the stage for a succession of heartwarming, humorous, amazing and mostly-true stories about Joe.  Friends, family, politicians, and public service representatives put the color in Joe’s history and left no doubt as to his qualifications for La Cañadan of the Year.   After the traditional presentation of commendations, awards and presents Joe was allowed to put his own twist on the stories that had been told.  With Ed Moulton up on high again, the program ended with a rousing For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.
