Plan to attend the St. Bede Builders’ Club
Prayer Breakfast next Wednesday. Call Ron
Baker at 626-817-5852 for reservations.
La Canadian of the Year is next week.
There are many guests attending to honor Joe Thompson,
so Howard Backer needs to notify the caterer in
advance. If you plan to attend but haven’t signed up
yet, be sure to call Howard Backer at 790-0593.
Century Club contributions have already been
made by 39 club members this year. That means $3,900
donated to our La Cañada Kiwanis Foundation for the
Children of the World!
We received a note from former Club Member Leon
Ellis, who was president of our club in 1965. He
still enjoys receiving our newsletter every week, but
asked to be switched from mail to e-mail delivery.
We also received a thank you note from the La Cañada
Flintridge Tournament of Roses Association. Our
Club makes a cash contribution to the Association each
year and also annually provides a hot evening meal a few
days before New Year’s Day for all the float-decorating
volunteers.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
1
Paul Westmoreland displayed
the Wall of Shame – the board of pictures of our
Club Members who have not yet attended an InterClub.
The next scheduled InterClub is scheduled for Tuesday,
May 17th with the Hollywood/Las Feliz Kiwanis

Pat Anderson told us about
a new LCF Chamber fundraiser. Lovely LCF decals can be
purchased at the Chamber office for $5. During the
month of May, the decals will also be available at the
Saturday Farmers’ Market.
3
Harriet Hammons announced
the June Social is A GO! Dinner at Damon’s followed by
Pajama Game at the Center Theater. The cost of dinner
has not yet been determined, but tickets for the Theater
will be $18. The sign-up sheet is already being passed
around.
4
Ed Moulton encouraged all
of us to bring more newspapers on Wednesdays to drop in
the Collection Cans. These newspapers go the
Glendale Association of Retarded Workshop and are
used to process shipping materials that are then sold to
manufacturers.
5
Bill Scherkey reminded
committee chairmen that he needs their April reports by
next Wednesday.
6
Hal Crockett reported on a
letter of thanks received from the House of the
Children for our Kiwanis Foundation gift of $400.
Our contribution was used for an orphanage in Peru.
7
Mary Gant is looking for
more donations for our Silent Auction
fundraiser. The Silent Auction will be a part of the
Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting on September 25th.
Dave Spence is providing a coupon for a four-hour
ride on his antique fire truck. Harriet
Hammons has donated a week at one of her
timeshares. Jack Dawson’s coupon will be worth
two hours of welding, braising, and plumbing. A local
hairdresser has donated two haircuts and styling. Every
Club Member is encouraged to obtain at least one item
for the auction.
8
Bob Wallace was circulating
a volunteer sign-up sheet for the Soap Box Derby.
Help is needed on Friday afternoon/evening, May 27th
for the registration and on Saturday, May 28th
for the actual race. Volunteers do not necessarily need
to be Club Members, so sign-up and bring a
spouse/friend/relative
9
Joel Smith is soliciting
advertising for the Soap Box Derby brochure.
Think of advertising in a broader way. Ads wishing
someone good luck, a happy birthday, etc. are encouraged
as well as business ads.
10
Bachy Bachmayer reminded us
to fill the Children’s Hospital tubs on our
tables. Our Los Angeles Children’s Hospital is just one
of the hospitals in the nationwide Children’s Miracle
Network hospitals. Last year the Children’s
Miracle Network hospitals provided more than $2.5
billion in charity care and trained over sixty percent
of pediatricians and eighty percent of pediatric
specialists in the United States.
FROSTY’S SLA
REPORT
The rumor
Frosty just heard at the meeting was that Bill
Watts was SLA and in the hospital. Details obtained
after the meeting: Bill had pneumonia in both
lungs and did end up in the hospital for a few days. He
should be back home by the time you read this
newsletter.
GUESTS
Megan
Browne was
welcomed by Bob Wallace. Megan
is the Activity
Director at the Roger Barkley Community Center
and was the
one who made us aware that today was
Denim Day.
Peter
Racicot has
already submitted both his application to join our Club
and his check for $100. Ed
Moulton, his
sponsor, told us that Peter’s
daughter was one of our Terrific Kids.
Jim Ackland
dedicated our Pledge of Allegiance today to
Peter’s
son who is in the Marine Corps and expected home soon
from Iraq.
Dang Pham
joined us for
lunch for the second time, and Mary Gant
graciously
provided him with a membership application,
Wendy
Gaynor and
Stephanie Brashears
were treated to lunch
by Pat Anderson
in honor of
Secretarys’ Day. Pat
said she couldn’t run
the Chamber office without Wendy
and
Stephanie and
thinks there should be an Indispensable Right Hand
Day.
THE PROGRAM
Scott Curry
spent three weeks in the northern part of Sri Lanka
shortly after the Tsunami. He was part of a
Volunteer Ministers Disaster Relief Team. His
pictures and story made us realize that disaster relief
is more than just providing medical care, food and
shelter. Scott’s team focused on treating the
mental trauma and physical pain suffered by survivors.
One of their efforts was to help the children overcome
their fear of the beach and water. Their heartwarming
approach was to offer the children treats for their help
cleaning up the beaches, and then providing crayons and
paper so the children could draw pictures of the tsunami
while sitting at the beach they just cleaned up.
Meetings were held to teach adults how to be good
listeners. After the training the adults were broken up
into pairs. One person would talk about their tsunami
experience while the other listened, and then the adults
would reverse roles. Being able to talk about the
terrifying experience over and over again helps people
who are “stuck mentally” to deal with the past and begin
focusing on the future. The disaster relief team also
taught adults how to provide a type of massage that the
relief teams call “nerve assists.” Relaxing the body
through this “hands on” technique provides relief from
both physical and mental pain. There were over 300
volunteers like Scott in Sri Lanka, all from the
Church of Scientology.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS
Diane DellaValle … Happy she can still see, since she
stuck her finger in her eye last night while she was
sound asleep.
Howard Backer
… Happy he and Rhoda had a great visit with
relatives in Florida, but Sad because his grand
dog, which was his daily companion, died.
Ed Moulton
… Happy to celebrate both the birth of his third
great grandchild and the pending birth of his fourth
great grandchild. Ed assured us there are two different
sets of parents.
Pat Anderson
… Happy there were so many people wearing denim
today. Happy the suspected bomb threat at the
Sports Chalet just turned out to be just a shopper’s
forgotten briefcase. Also Happy to have her
gals, Wendy and Stephanie, with her for
lunch.
Mary Gant
… Happy Karl Johnson was recently named
Top Performer by Edward Jones.
Karl Johnson
… Happy for his success!

Birthdays: Everyone with a birthday must have
been out-of-town celebrating.
Anniversaries:
All on Prez Daryal’s list were also no-shows.
However, Prez Daryal never forgets.
Jelly Roll Revelation:
There was a revelation …. About someone who didn’t show
up today.
Prez Daryal
was foiled again! But wait until next week!!!
Fines:
After
acknowledging how lucky our Club is to have so many
women members, and in honor that and Denim Day,
Prez Daryal
decreed that everyone
not wearing a brassiere had to pony up a dollar. Most
of the men couldn’t believe what they were hearing and
took a while to pull out the bucks. Jack
Dawson
objected vehemently, and then stood up and unbuttoned
his shirt and bared his breasts bra …, which he
claims he has been wearing since his wife found the bra
in his glove compartment.
Frosty’s
Challenge: Prez Daryal gave the challengers
first chance and Lloyd Welch started with a story
about a callous engineer. Carl Christensen
relayed a rumor that Prez Daryal lost $500
playing poker, and John Parady had another
gambling story about the horse races that illustrated
why non-Catholics should understand the difference
between a blessing and last rites. For the benefit of
those Club Members who have missed quite a few Wednesday
meetings, Frosty repeated a joke he told a few
weeks ago. John took the prize!
Knock Knock
Joke: After six and one half months we’re finally
catching on to this youthful type of humor. If you
missed the meeting you should ask Howard Backer
about Amsterdam and ask Frank Ragazzi about
Yomama.
Fifty-Fifty
Drawing: Bill Scherkey – who will be selling raffle
tickets next week.
