ANNOUNCEMENTS

1  -  Paul Westmoreland reported we have had 15 interclubs, including two this month.

2  -  Harriet Hammons is planning a Dine Out evening on June 10, so mark your calendars now.  Dinner tentatively at Damons and then Pajama Game at the Center Theater.

3  -  Ed Moulton is looking for help with the newspaper cans on Wednesdays.  Volunteers are needed at 11:45 a.m. (or earlier) to move the newspaper cans out to the curb, and volunteers (with muscle) are needed to move the filled newspaper barrels back after the lunch meeting.

4  -  Mary Gant is looking for silent auction items from club members for the Wine and Gourmet Food event in September.  Joel Smith has already offered a weekend at his mountain cabin, Tom Gilfoy has garnered two family memberships to Descanso, and Linda Magarian  also has obtained an auction item (sorry, Linda – I couldn’t hear what it was).

5 Joel Smith asked everyone to be ready to “answer the call” from a Soap Box Derby chairman and be willing to volunteer.

6  -  Bob Wallace reminded the editor that next Wednesday, April 27 is Denim Day in LA.  Supported by the Roger Barkley Community Center, the wearing of denim brings attention to the Los Angeles Rape Prevention Education Campaign that started in 1999 and supports the fight to end violence against women in our country and around the world.  For additional information contact Megan Browne at 790-4353.

THE PROGRAM

Charles and Jeannie Broberg had great slides to compliment the story of their 3 ½ year experience in Russia.  They spent two years in Kiev in the Ukraine and then 1½ years in Moscow.  They made numerous friends (a given, if you know the Brobergs) and enjoyed the warmth and generosity of people everywhere they went.  The Russians love to play and know how to have fun, even though most people don’t have a lot of money.  Medical care is not at the American standard, and Dr. Charles helped many people get the right care and/or medication for their illnesses.  The individual stories of particular people they met made the presentation very personal.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Hal CrockettHappy because there was another newspaper article about our support of the Children of the Andes.

Harriet HammonsHappy for her most relaxing vacation in Hawaii.

Mary GantHappy for something connected with the LCF Chamber and the Chamber Ambassadors.

Patsy ChristiansonHappy for her improved health and all the hugs.

Ken LoweHappy he not only survived last weekend’s Key Club Convention but also still has his hearing  (the 3800 kids were very noisy).  Our LCHS Key Club was represented by 16 members and 3 sponsors.  The Division 3 Lt. Governor is from our own LCHS Key Club and was very impressive.

Frosty’s Challenge:  Elizabeth Georgeon easily won the vote for her story about canaries on the Virgin Islands, but George Lutes, Joel Smith and Frosty were good competition.
