ODIER TELLS ABOUT N.W. CHINA/TIBET ATAI REGION
The Prez talked about the Board meeting last Thursday,
the amazing fact that we are sort of on-budget, and that in fact
we may have some extra money to spend. Jack Dawson’s old
Bentley has been sold and the Foundation just made $3, 285 from
the sale. Kudos to Jack! Also, a repeat announcement: be
ready for La Cañadan of the Year Joe Thompson, May 4th.
We had NO GUESTS today! Scandalum Magnatum! Worse, the
Prez failed to officially say hello to oft-missing friends
Paul Bobzin and Pete Palermo. Shocking! Is it
possible to have two scandalum magnatum (scandala magnata?) in
the same day? (Cheap shot, Prez, the truth of the matter
is that you’re doing a great job, even if none of us are likely
to admit it.) A major highlight: we inducted new member
John Parady, a task done with incredible enthusiasm by
Jim Acklund (Jim do you sell that stuff? we could sometimes
use some). John is sponsored by Ed Moulton, and so joins
a long list of notables all sponsored by Ed. Jim told John of
all the clubs we sponsor for supporting youth, but he forgot to
tell John that it is not too late to join the Soap Box Derby or
the Wine & Gourmet Food Tasting projects (Aha!). Yours truly
joined the Century Club in celebration of 42 years of bliss
(mine, not necessarily hers). There were no birthdays to speak
of. And Jelly Roll had nothing to say either, a rare
event!
Happy, Sad Bucks (& yucks):
Joan Peters was happy that she won $2 for guessing what
the Prez’ number “170” was for (the number of days until
he is out of his current position, not his combined age and IQ
as was suggested). Pete Palermo was happy over the
Dodger’s Opening Day win. Pat Anderson had an
“embarrassing” buck, since she left the prize that Howard
Backer won at Saturday’s Bingo BBQ on the wrong doorstep,
while Howard Backer countered with his own “embarrassed”
buck that he didn’t see the prize (a basket of Azaleas) sitting
on the next door porch (did you get all that?). Ed Moulton
left a “surprise” buck that Frosty Boyd was actually at a
different-than-usual table. Hal Crockett paid $2 for
bragging rights: one for a Kiwanis Youth Magazine article on
continued tsunami relief that inspired a $50 donation by him,
and the other: I don’t know because Bob Wallace and
Clyde Hemphill were talking too loudly too close to me (and
not because my hearing is failing). Anthony Portantino
contributed to the cause for our recent Talent Show that is now
available on CD or at our web-site. Mary Gant gave $2 for
Clyde Hemphill who found a web-based satellite photo
showing where the Prez’ home town Dinuba was (although
all that was evident was a cross-road) while the Prez
gave $2 for a nice Valley Sun article on his southern belle
Mary. Deborah Weirick donated $5 for a Happy Birthday of
5 year-old son Jack, and Chuck Gulick $1 for “swell-time”
spent with grand kids. Dentist Don Corbett pitched in $1
for another grandchild, and Karl Johnson another $1
because Don was a truly “painless” dentist in recent work on his
teeth. Finally, Frosty Boyd celebrated the 80th
anniversary of the Los Angeles Breakfast (and no, he was NOT a
charter member).
FROSTY’S CHALLENGE:
Frosty started with a story about a 90 year-old recent
father (married to a 28 year-old blonde) who figured from a
hunting analogy that maybe someone else had fired the bullet.
George Lutes countered with the husband, who, when asked by
his wife what her remaining good features were, said ”good
eyesight.” Bill Watts blew us away with the winner, one
about two young brothers who were experimenting with swearing at
breakfast time while ordering Cheerios.
Knock Knock Joke:
There were no jokes,
but I have here a close approximation to that delightful
limerick from last week’s speaker: The (Norse) Thunder
God rode out one day upon his favorite filly. “I’m Thor,” he
roared, “Of course,” was the retort, “You forgot your thaddle,
thilly.” Improvements are
solicited.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
It’s time to get ready for the Sixth Annual Greater Los
Angeles All-American Soap Box Derby, which we will
co-sponsor with the California Families Soap Box Derby
Association on May 28, on Michigan Hill. Yours truly
introduced the core team that has gotten started so far, with
kudos to the bunch for lots of hard work, while Soap Box Race
Communications Chair Lloyd Welch offered up copies of our
major mailing for club members to keep since it contains all the
details. Pat Anderson told us about the Chamber Mixer on
April 21st at Vic’s Automotive Repair. Bachy
Bachmayer reminded us of the cans at the tables for
Children’s Hospital. Program Chair Frank Ragazzi reminded
us of our upcoming Travel Adventure and Program.
FROSTY’S SLA REPORT:
Frosty reported that Don Davidson and family are
moving to Santa Barbara because of Corrine’s poor health.
50/50 RAFFLE:
Won by Frosty Boyd!
TODAY’S SPEAKER:
The topic was our club’s Wine and Gourmet Tasting event,
planned for Sunday, September 25, from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM in our
very own Memorial Park, with an entry fee of $40. The main
speakers were event co-chairs Don Corbett and Joan
Peters, followed by Site Preparation Chair Carl
Christensen, Winery Chair Clyde Hemphill, Food Chair
Joel Smith, Silent Auction Chair Mary Gant, and
Registration Chair Pat Anderson. The big issues are
getting enough wineries and restaurants (all club members are
asked to help by soliciting their favorite restaurant), getting
good donations for the silent auction (all club members are
solicited), and getting a good turnout (all club members are
asked to spread the word to their friends). Restaurants will get
an 8’ table in a roughly 10’ by 10’ space in a tent in the shade
but without electrical power (most use sterno). They get to
provide tasty samples of what they are most proud of and are
allowed to advertise within their booth as much as they want – a
great opportunity for your favorite restaurant to become the
favorite of even more folks.
We sang Hail Kiwanis to the tune of “On Wisconsin” and headed
for the door…
