The Kiwanis Club of La Cañada’s Weekly Newsletter

Guest Editor -- Bill Watts

Editorial Comment:

I’ve been told that you can write one of these newsletters without going to the meeting as it’s always the same old thing!  You can also worship without going to Church but you are missing the feeling of belonging and fellowship as well as the many feelings and events that can never be conveyed in print.  The answer:  Come to our (YOUR) Kiwanis meeting each Wednesday noon and no longer just belong but be an active member and add more meaning to your life as well as helping “the children of the world”…. Ed.

And On With The Fun:

Kiwanians, still reeling from last weeks fantastic Talent Show, wondered aloud what new event our Prez would come up with to liven up the meetings.

(tell me it isn’t true that were going to have a Body Building Contest).

The Prez sez . . .

Today’s music was by boom box as the Crockett’s are out of town as were a lot of people this week.  It’s Spring Break time.  But Ed Moulton was available to lead us in “America The Beautiful”

Ed Moulton

The Prez called on wife Mary to lead our Flag Salute.  Al Restivo did the prayers honors and then requited members for the next 2 weeks.

  • BOARD MEETING TOMORROW (THURSDAY) NIGHT AT CITY BANK.. 7 P.M.

  • NEXT WEEK (APRIL 13TH)- DON CORBETT & JOAN PETERS TELL US ABOUT THE WINE & GOURMET FOOD TASTING (WILL THEY BRING ANY SAMPLES??/)

  • APRIL 16TH:  TRAVEL ADVENTURES ON SATURDAY NIGHT FEATURING “SOUL OF MOROCO”  (Our last Adventure this year)

  • APRIL 20TH- DOC CHARLES BROBERG TALKS ABOUT HIS 3 YEARS IN RUSSIA

  • APRIL 27TH- SCOTT CURRY- HIS STORY ABOUT SPENDING 3 WEEKS IN SRI-LANKA AFTER THE TSUNAMI

  • MAY 4TH- WE SALUTE “LA CANADIAN OF THE YEAR”

  • MAY 11TH-PIERRE ODIER TELLS ABOUT N.W. CHINA/TIBET ATAI REGION

The Prez continued with Kudos to Jeb Long & Bill Watts for their coverage of the Talent Show last week. He said he got a call from Paul Westmoreland (you remember him, he’s from Dinuba) who just got back from a long cruise and urged everyone to sign up for an inter-club.  The guests included Don Graf of the A.M. club who, along with wife Maggi, will be the Grand Marshall of the Memorial Day Fiesta Parade; Newest member John Parady, and Bruce Campbell of the News-Press who complemented us on our Website and Newsletter.

Look out! The Prez then put on his purse (it’s so him) and pushed ahead with fines. First was Birthdays (and several Birthday boys were missing) so he held up George Lutes who popped for $69 for his Birthday and also got sung to by the group.  Ken Lowe religiously followed the Prez around collecting all the bucks.  Jelly Roll popped up his (her?) head and the Prez zeroed in on Linda Magarian for not wearing her K pin at the mixer held by the Tof R and Chamber.

Happy, Sad Bucks (& yucks):

Ed Moulton with a happy buck for all who participated in the Talent Show; Mary Gant for our guest Don Graf being the Grand Marshall of the Fiesta Days Parade; Joel Smith was happy that the upcoming Soap Box Derby is now listed as an official part of Fiesta Days; Lloyd Welch was sad that his Mother died (she was 96); Clyde Hemphill was very happy for the great job that Joel Smith is doing as chairman of the Soap Box Derby; Howard Backer had a sad buck (with tears in his eyes) as he just paid $45 dollars to gas up his car.

FROSTY’S CHALLENGE:

Frosty gave it his all with a joke about a dog (that turned out to be a real dog) as he lost to Bachy Bachmayer who told a joke that was almost as long as his “Lydia the Tattooed Lady” performance at the Talent Show.  Al Restivo tired to top it but Bachy was the overwhelming winner.

Knock Knock Joke:

The Prez asked if anyone had a knock-knock joke (and we hoped not).  Then he picked on your editor for a limerick but was satisfied when our speaker gave us a good one.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Put some bucks in the table tubs for the Children’s Hospital was requested by Bachy Bachmayer; Come to the Bingo B-B-Q to raise bucks for the Tournament of Roses was plugged by Clyde Hemphill.  Jim Reynolds tried to sell a Gold Mine which Ed Moulton quickly snapped up.

FROSTY’S SLA REPORT:

Don Davidson may have to drop out of the Club to care for wife Corrine who has a brain tumor.  Prayers are requested.

50/50 RAFFLE:

Won by Bill Watts

TODAY’S SPEAKER:

Dr. Jeff Bjorck who had a long list of scholastic credits is a member of Lifewater International.  Lifewater is a non-profit Christian development organization that understands the need in our world for safe water.  By working with partners overseas they empower people by bringing in tools to develop and maintain clean drinking water supplies and improve hygiene and sanitation.  Approximately 1.1 billion people do not have access to safe drinking water. A child dies every 15 seconds from water-related diseases.

Dr Jeff Bjorck

You can help with a donation. $18 dollars provides one person with safe water from a newly completed well. $4000 drills one new water well. It was interesting to note that only 1% of the Earth’s water is fresh water.

This is another way Kiwanis can contribute to International Understanding.

We Hailed Kiwanis and headed for the door…
