The Prez sez . . .

  • At the mid-year conference on February12th participants were given kazoos.  The Prez then demonstrated how to order at drive-through windows.  Since you can never understand them, why should they understand you?  Simply talk through your kazoo!

  • Jack Dawson and Mary Gant were called up and presented commendations from the County of Los Angeles for being ‘Corporate Poll Workers’ at last November’s election, the Prez also received recognition, as the three worked the day at the polls and donated their $80 pay back to the Club.

  • The board meeting next week, Thursday, March 3rd, will be at the La Cañada Presbyterian Church in the Multi-Purpose room.  A change from where the board usually meets.

  • Reminder that the District Governor’s Visit to Division 3 will be Sunday, March 13 at the La Cañada Country Club and all 12 clubs in our District will be there.  A sign-up sheet was passed for anyone who wants to attend.  Attendees will get credit for an inter-club.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Bill Scherkey thanks all for getting in their monthly reports in on time and reminded us that it is  now time to report for February

  • Ed Moulton reminded us that at our regular meeting on March 30 we will have an all-club Talent show and asked those interested to see him to sign up.  He said that the more performers the shorter each performance will be, so everyone get in there and offer your talent.

  • Paul Westmoreland announced the next inter-club will be Tuesday, March 8th with the Montrose La Crescenta club at noon at the Le Betulle Restaurant.  Those who attended last Friday’s Glendale Club meeting and those who went to the Race Day got credit for inter-club attendance.

  • Harriett Hammons, our Social Chair, reported on the great time had at Race Day.  She then told  about what is happening with the First Lady’s Project which is to help with reading programs in needy schools or libraries and that so far we have heard from the Roscoe School in the LA  Unified School District.  Harriett expects to hear from more schools in depressed areas.  She will keep us informed.  Harriett also announced the Boy Scout’s Big Strike Auction coming up.

  • Bachy Bachmeyer reminded to put our money in the containers on the table for Children’s Hospital, and reported that after the meeting last week the Flintridge Prep Key Clubbers gave all the money they had received from our club in fines be donated to the Children’s Hospital Fund.

FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

Pat Flynn is trying to continue with his career while watching over wife, Joyce.  She is doing about the same.  Dick DeGrey enjoys hearing from and about us and our club and misses attending meetings but is not comfortable coming without Shirley.  Shirley is about the and now has a full-time caregiver.

THE PROGRAM

Frank Regazzi introduced out own Jack Dawson and Bob Martin to tell about ‘Cajun Country.’  Jack used a slide projector to help us understand the area in Canada and Louisiana and parts of the east coast where the French settlers came into and also fled to.  Bob had a video to show some of the life of the Cajuns.  They told how the French originally immigrated to Canada and why they left and what the attraction of the Louisiana bayous were for them.  Also explained were the language, music and culture of the Cajuns.  A thoroughly enjoyable program that many of us wanted to know more about and hopefully the video will be available at a later date.

 HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Carl Christensen…Happy that his granddaughter was on the front page of the NewsPress.  He feels that Jelly Roll stiffed him a couple of weeks ago with bad information and therefore the Prez should have to pay up $20.  O.k.

Pete Palermo…Happy that he was at the meeting this week and would be skiing next week so he joined the Century Club.

Hal Crockett…Happy that their son was in Munich, Germany and was having one of his compositions presented, that was $2 worth; then another $1 for their great-granddaughter, Ruby Crockett’s birthday.

Violet Regazzi…Happy $5 for the great job Melinda Thompson does every week on the Kiwanian.

George Lutes…Happy that the tiger that had been spotted in the Simi Valley area had been found.  Sad that the tiger was killed.

Steve Hagerty…Happy because his God-Son, Jason, competed in the La Cañada-Ventura Soap Box Rally in Ventura and ‘held his own’ against much older and more seasoned derby participants.  Jason even won his closest race by 1/10,000th of a second!

Ed Moulton…Sad because the President, Vice-President and Secretary had all missed the DCM meeting and thought all should pay $5 – did they?

FACTS AND FICTION

Music:  piano tunes by Martha Crockett, Ed Moulton leading , opened with America the Beautiful; later lead us in La Cañada says, Hi, and closed with Hail Kiwanis

Opening: flag salute by Karl Johnson and inspiration by Bill Scherkey

Guests:  Tom Gilfoy introduced his grandson, Mike, who was out of school for Ski Week and lives in Big Creek, a suburb of Dinuba – well that’s a little stretch of the imagination.  John Parody was a guest for the second time of Ed MoultonJohn is interested in becoming a Kiwanian Deborah Weirick from the CC YMCA, where she is Development Director, attended for the second time, and submitted her application for membership and a check.  That definitely qualifies her for membership.

Master of the Cash Box:  ‘Vito’ Hemphill

Anniversaries:  Clyde Hemphill said if anyone could guess how many years he would join the Century Club, we missed, they had celebrated their 50th, he joined anyway.

Birthdays:  Bob Martin’s special day was February 14th so he gave $79 for the years and $21 for Valentine’s Day.  Another Century Club.

Sue Leabo pointed out that it was Mike Leininger’s birthday and the Prez had missed it.  Mike admitted that the Superintendent of Schools doesn’t lie so he made his donation.

Fines:

Jelly Roll Revelation:  Diane Delle Valle and her friend Richard were the big winners at the Race Day event so Dianne shared $20 with the club.

Extra Fines:  The Prez says he can’t afford to hold this office he had paid up $25 from the members

            challenging him this day.

Frosty’s Challenge:  Frosty told about some soldiers trying to get off on leave.  Then George Lutes gave us a story about a lady trying to by draperies for her computer because it has ‘Windows.’  This was then challenged by Howard Backer telling of a girlfriend sending a ‘Dear John’ letter  to a serviceman in Afghanistan.  Frosty won!

Knock Knock Joke:   Frosty gave a knock-knock joke and then the Prez tried one, both received thumbs-down.

Today's Message from the Prez'

Thanks to Jack and Bob for an excellent run-down on our Cajun friends--all without mosquitoes.  What's next guys?

.  The Jewel City Club is having a car show.  Attached is a TV commercial they have prepared.

.  Our program for next Wednesday, March 3--Dr. Gary Lawson, Executive Director of the Lawson Healthcare Foundation.  Dr. Lawson will present his views that the big money donations to the FDA from large drug companies have major negative effects on society.

.  Harriet Hammons is getting our youth reading assistance efforts off the ground.  Contact Harriet if you would like to do some tutoring/reading, and/or helping with book acquisitions for donation.  She is concentrating on needy areas.

.  Don't forget our club "talent" show on March 30.  Call impresario Ed Moulton to help, or volunteer to show your stuff.  This would be a good meeting to invite guests.  They will be stunned at our virtuosity, and will insist on joining our club immediately.

.  Bob Martin has volunteered to serve in the newly-formed position of Club Historian.  He will try to  capture as much older history as feasible, and start a plan to record significant club activities and data on a year-by-year basis.  Thanks, Bob.  You have our support.

.  Don't forget to sign-up for our Governor's visit and luncheon on Sunday, March 13, noon at The LCF Country Club.  This is a fun event, where all clubs are represented, and major awards and recognition will be presented by Gov. Larry McLeland. The cost is $25 per person.  Sign up through Howard Backer, and he will bill you.
