THE PROGRAM

What a terrific meeting we had – led by the Flintridge Prep Key Club.  President Candace Markley was enthusiastic, poised, and full of fun.  She opened the meeting at 12:40 p.m. by teaching us the Key Club Pledge

.

I pledge on my honor to uphold the objects of Key Club International; to build my home, school and community; to serve my nation and God; and to combat all forces which tend to undermine these institutions.

Candace was ably assisted by Nina Brooks, VP; Joyce Lam, Secretary; Maria Sanchez, Treasurer, and Amanda Kung , who chairs an impressive number of committees.  The gals were all wearing their Club T-Shirts to show they are known as The Sharkies.  They took turns telling us about their many fundraising activities and charitable deeds.  Talk about ENERGY!!!

The 2004 year started out with their biggest annual fundraiser, the February Charity Dance.  A great theme, Bling Bling – Bringing Down the House, was great fun as everyone came dressed up in lots of costume jewelry and other fun finery.  The whole school participated, and The Sharkies raised over $2,000 for the Elizabeth House (a home for battered women in Pasadena).   The Club received awards from Adam Schiff and the City of Los Angeles for this endeavor!

The Sharkies also had a Fashion Show in February.  Many local stores participated.  Proceeds went to Union Station.  The Club believes it is important to be involved in community activities, so they serve refreshments at all our Travel Adventure programs and raise approximately $100 each Saturday evening.  In addition to selling treats at the Soap Box Derby, they also have a car to race (at least in the years they have someone small enough to get in the car).  The day before Halloween they worked on the UNICEF Trick or Treat fund drive; 20 members in costume knocked on doors around La Cañada and raised another $600.

Other activities last year included:

  • A car wash at Carls Juniors in Pasadena.  Over 40 volunteers raised over $300 washing many cars and one big boat.

  • Turkey Trot Drive which ended with a huge Thanksgiving buffet at Harvest Time Ministries, a church in Pasadena.  In addition to collecting all the food, cooking 33 turkeys and all the other “fixin’s” for the poor and homeless, the Club also provided entertainment for both the children and adults which included juggling, piano music, and dancing – just to name a few.

  • Arranging a Pizza and Movie Night the last day of school before Christmas Vacation.  The whole school enjoyed making Christmas cards for the patients at Children’s Hospital before the the movie.

  • Using Valentine’s to raise $300 for an orphanage affected by the Tsunami.  The Club sold roses, candy grams and singing grams.

These five gals really know how to have fun.  It’s no wonder they have increased their Club member-ship over 50% this year.  They ended our meeting with a quiz to see how much we remembered about their activities – and Kiwanis members who answered incorrectly were fined with good humor and quite a bit of heckling from the audience.
