-

$1,000 contribution from Vons to compensate for not displaying
our collection cans during the past two months. Way to go,
Ed!!!
-
Paul Westmoreland
reminded everyone to sign up for the International President’s
luncheon in Pasadena on December 30. This will count as an
interclub meeting.
Bachy Bachmayer
suggested we put our change into the Children’s Hospital
canisters on our tables.
FROSTY’S SLA REPORT
Dick DeGrey has ventured out of the house
this week and should be able to join us on Wednesdays very soon.
Pat Flynn could use some support; phone calls and notes
would be appreciated.
THE PROGRAM
Frank Ragazzi
introduced Allison
Goodall
from the
California Science Center (formerly the Museum of Science and
Industry). Allison
gave us a brief overview of the Science Center, which is now a
public/private partnership much like Descanso. The Foundation
raises about $21 million a year that represents over 50% of the
operating budget. Approximately 1.2 million people visit the
Science Center each year, including 400,000 school children. The
current temporary exhibit is called Body Worlds, The Anatomical
Exhibition of Real Human Bodies. It is the largest temporary
exhibit the Center has ever had and is spread out over 20,000
square feet. Thanks to the breakthrough process of plastination,
more than 200 real human specimens are displayed to reveal the
complexity and elegance of the inner human body. A short video
gave us a good sample of this amazing exhibition. The Body Worlds
Exhibit runs through January 23, 2005. Allison suggested the best
time to visit was weekdays after 4 p.m.; the exhibit is open until
9 p.m. It would take several visits to see and absorb the entire
exhibit.

Pres and Guest Speaker,
Allison Goodall
HAPPY & SAD BUCKS
Clyde Hemphill … Happy the Holiday
Party at the Dawson’s house was such a success – and thanks
to Harriet for all her hard work … and it wasn’t too hard
working for her.
Pat Anderson … Happy to thank the
Dawson’s for providing their home for the Holiday Party and
being such gracious hosts.
Mike Leininger … Happy we have such
beautiful holiday decorations along Foothill, and Thanks to
the Chamber for “making it happen.”
Mary Gant … Happy the decorations at
our Sunday party were so lovely, Thanks to Patsy Christianson
and Linda Magarian.
Hal Crockett … Happy that the L.A.
Times mentioned a composition written by his son.
Harriet Hammons … Happy for all the
help she had putting on the Holiday Party. Thanks to her son,
Clyde Hemphill, Linda Magarian, Diane DellaValle,
the Gants, the Dawsons, Martha Crockett,
Ed Moulton, Bill Scherkey, and Melinda Thompson.
Paul Westmoreland … Happy because
USC’s quarterback won the Heismann Trophy.
FACTS AND FICTION
Music: piano tunes by Martha Crockett,
Ed Moulton leading America the Beautiful and Hail
Kiwanis
Opening: flag
salute by Bill Watts and
inspiration by Bachy Bachmayer
Guests: Don
and Maggi Graf
– who belonged to our
club before joining the A.M. club. Don works at Descanso and we
often see him in the ticket office. Don
and Maggi
lived on the Descanso property for 40 years. They are moving to
the Palmdale/Lancaster area. Ken
Lowe introduced seven members of
the LCHS Key Club
Terrific Kids:
Joining us from La Cañada
Elementary School were Sidney Golombek
and Nathan Chen,
their mothers, and Sidney’s twin brother. Mary
Gant and
Bill Scherkey did the
introductions, and once again we were amazed at what sixth graders
can accomplish. We also learned the Terrific Kids at LCE are
chosen by their peers.
Fines: Carlos Cortez was the secret
greeter. Those who didn’t shake his hand and/or wear their
Kiwanis pin had to ante up. Prez Daryal took a vote, and
Frosty Boyd will have to pay a Seat Reservation Fee next
week if he doesn’t sit at a different table.
Fifty-Fifty Drawing: Doris Horwith
Frosty’s Challenge: Frosty received
tepid laughter for his joke about a dentist, Jack Dawson
challenged with a painful heart story, but Steve Hagerty
got the prize about a bridge to Hawaii.
Jelly Roll
Revelation:
Mary Gant
got a new
car last week. Prez
Daryal
suggested
a $20 donation for the Children of the World.
Mary
had her $20 bill ready. How could she argue with both the
Prez
and her husband?
