The Kiwanis Club of La Cañada’s Weekly Newsletter

Melinda Thompson, Vacationing Editor

 melinda@ctssolutions.com

President Daryal called the meeting early so all the fun could begin while we were still eating.

Ed Moulton opened the program by leading us in ‘God Bless America.’

The Flag Salute was then led by George Lutes.

Al Restivo gave a very inspirational Inspiration.

ANNOUNCEMENTS BY THE PREZ

Thanked Joel Smith for donating a cord of firewood that was then purchased by Bob Wallace for $100.

● Doris Horwith had won a wine basket at the last Chamber Mixer and donated it to the club.  Auctioneer Gant then went into auctioneering mode and with vigorous bidding from Jack Dawson, Pat Anderson, Elizabeth Georgeon and Mary Gant it was finally sold to Mary who really had anticipated Jack throwing in one more bid, not.  The basket sold for $45.

It was announced that Fire Department was sponsoring a Golf Tournament.

Attention was called to the new ‘Position & Committee’ listing.

Board meeting tomorrow night, November 4th at Citibank in La Cañada Flintridge at 7:00 p.m.

The Prez Sez…

“Century Club” donations comprise a substantial portion of Foundation income. Many thanks to the following members who have already joined the club:

Paul Westmoreland  Tom Gilfoy         Ed Moulton

     Glen Pettit        Clyde Hemphill

     Bachy Bachmayer    Daryal Gant

     Mel Wilson         Theo Abelman

Attached to this newsletter is a two-page preliminary listing of positions, committees and assignments.  There is still plenty of flexibility here.  Contact the Prez about any suggested changes.

WELCOME BACK

It was noted that Tom Gilfoy and Bruce Campbell have not been with us for a while so Ed led us is a couple of renditions of ‘Welcome, Welcome Back.’

BIRTHDAYS

Birthday Boy Clyde Hemphill has a Birthday on November 3rd (today) and because he is so old he joined the Century Club.  Not to be outdone, Mel Wilson and Theo Ablemen decided that their birthdays were also pretty darned important so they, too, joined the Century Club.  The members then sang ‘Happy Birthday Kiwanians.’

ANNIVERSARIES

The Anniversaries just keep rolling around and Ed Moulton and his dear Connie have been married so many years, over 60, that the Club got a Century Club donation.  Next Tom Gilfoy related how he and his bride celebrated their 50th Anniversary in the Pacific Northwest with family.  They actually were in Portland for the big event and Tom, too, joined the Century Club.

DONATION FOR THE WEEK

It was now time for Jelly Roll to state the donation of the week.  The answer was Al Restivo.  The question was ‘Who wrote a letter to the editor, a rather good one at that, but did not mention Kiwanis in the letter?’  Al good naturedly gave the required $20.

GUESTS

Honorary Member Theo Abelman was delighted to be with us and support all our projects.  Bruce Campbell of the Glendale News Press said he was always honored to be our guest and be able to write of our club’s activities.  With our Song Leader Ed we sang lustily ‘Hi Neighbor.’

HAPPY BUCKS

Pat Anderson gave a couple; the first one is the joy of the election being over and is looking forward to no more political mailings.  The second was how the Propositions were voted on.  Paul Westmoreland gave a dollar to tell Clyde Hemphill that is will take more than $1 to keep Dinuba from being mentioned.  Bachy gave to say what a

terrific convention he had attended for Youth and Ethics and how rewarding it was to see their work.  This organization is sponsored through our Youth Services.  Al Restivo gave $5 for the re-election of President George Bush.  Mark Alexander gave for the passing of Proposition 1A and then challenged the three Council Members to put in $’s, too.  Dave Spence not only put his buck in but then challenged Mark Alexander to meet a donation for Carol Liu’s re-election and said something to the effect it would have a couple of zeros on the end.  There seemed to be some mumbling from Mark over that challenge.

SAD BUCKS

Glen Pettit gave a sad $2 for the misspelling of his name last week when he joined the Century Club and noted there was more than one misspelled name.  O.k., Glen, here are the corrections:  It’s Glen Pettit, Mel Wilson and Bachy Bachmayer.

Jack Dawson volunteered to collect the cash today and was entrusted with the bag of goodies for these lovely folk but managed to misplace it in his enthusiasm of all the $$$’s rolling in.  Once the errant bag was recovered the Prez then gave all Century Club joiners Kiwanis flashlights and then chocolate ‘eye balls’ were given to the Birthday folk.

FINES: For this week you had to have proof of voting or pay up $2.

SPECIAL FOR THE DAY:  President Daryal blew a rather loud whistle and a waiter appeared with a plate that was served to Anthony Portantino and Anthony got to ‘eat crow’ for John Kerry’s loss.  The Prez then told Anthony he could eat it but not keep it as it is an official Kiwanian Crow.

FROSTY’S CHALLENGE:  Frosty offered one about the Three Bears and how Mama Bear is so overworked.

Anthony Portantio then told about President Bush ordering a ‘Quickie.’

That was followed by Howard Backer and one about a Blond and a jigsaw puzzle.

Anthony won!

Knock Knock Joke:  Jack Dawson came through with a joke about Bisquick.  Whoa!  Followed by moans.

RAFFLE

This week it was won by Paul Westmoreland.  He then announced that once your photo is off the ‘Interclub Board’ you will be eligible to win the contents of the Prize Jar and that his winnings will be added to it.  Wow, that should inspire all of us.

The next Interclub will be November 18th, at 12:15 p.m. at LCHS, see Paul for details.

CLUB ANNOUNCEMENTS

Songster Ed Moulton reminded that we are very fortunate to have George Mester speaking next week.

Pat Anderson said that the Miss La Cañada Flintridge

contest is in full swing and that Friday, November 5th is deadline for entrants to apply and it appears there will be a ‘bumper crop’ of contestants.  Also Pat announced that November 18th is the date of the next Mixer to be at the Roger Barkley Center and there will be great entertainment, food, beverages and desserts.

Mel Wilson said our Club is the recipient of good news, we will not have to vacate our lovely weekly setting for our meetings in December and that the meetings of December 1st and 8th will meet at Descanso Gardens as usual.

Karl Johnson told of the good works being done at the Glendale Youth Alliance and that he has a few tickets at $10 each for a car auction being held this coming Saturday, November 6 and that you can purchase them from him.

Clyde Hemphill said it was too bad that Bill Watts missed today’s meeting as we had regular-size ice tea glasses.

Bachy Bachmayer reminded us to drop our coins and dollars in the tubs on the tables that support Children’s Hospital.

Mary Gant reminded all of the Tournament’s Wine and Roses evening this coming Sunday, November 7th.

FROSTY’SLA REPORT

Frosty Boyd gave the report starting with the announcement that he had reached Sookie Matthews and that she has just been very busy.  Frosty was unable to reach Frank Williams but is assuming that Frank’s step-children are probably stretched thin in caring for him. The good news that Dick De Grey is home and involved in projects and that Shirley could be heard in the background playing the piano.

THE PROGRAM

Howard Backer introduced our speaker Debbie McIntosh who gave us a wonderful slide show and narrative on ‘America’s Golden Age.’  Ms. McIntosh began by stating that there are too many negatives regarding this great country of ours and then proceeded to tell us all the wonderful things, past and present, about the uniqueness of our fantastic nation.  It was very inspirational program.  At the end Debbie invited us all to Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills on November 11 at 11:00 a.m. where Veterans Day will be celebrated.  President Gant then presented the speaker with the Kiwanis mug and Debbie says that this now completes her set of six.

Debby McIntosh, Guest

We were dismissed with a hearty ‘Hail Kiwanis’ with Ed on piano and Jack Dawson leading the singing.
