LCF SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION

 presented by Gene Stokely

Wednesday – Lunch Meeting at Descanso

ANNOUNCEMENTS

1 -  Paul Westmoreland has already removed the pictures of those members who have attended an interclub this year (starting Oct. 1).  Check out the picture chart on the easel near the front door.  Sign up lists are on Prez Daryal’s new “utility table.”

2  -  Looking way ahead, Pat Anderson told us to mark out December 2 for La Cañada’s Festival of Lights.  In addition to Santa, real snow and hot chocolate, this year there will also be two live reindeer. 3  -  If you having been trying to obtain a copy of John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley, call Pat Anderson at the Chamber Office.  The city’s Read a Book event has exhausted most local supplies.

4  -  Ed Moulton encouraged us to attend the next Kiwanis Chorus practice (see above).

FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

Dick DeGrey is back home again after another stay in the hospital.  We received a a nice card from the William’s family.

“Destiny is a matter of choice.  It is not a thing to be waited for.  It is a thing to be achieved.”

- William Jennings Bryan

THE PROGRAM

Although we have all heard about the Make A Wish Foundation, Eloise Crawford gave us an in-depth look at this philanthropic organization that is dedicated to children with life threatening diseases.  Eloise is the Los Angeles Chapter’s Director of Community Relations and has been with Make A Wish for five years.  Last year the Los Angeles Chapter granted a wish for 386 children.  Referrals come from many sources, but Children’s Hospital refers more children than any other entity.  Make A Wish started in Phoenix in 1980 and has already become an international organization.  The entire family is included in the Wish, as family members often suffer as much as the child.  There are five general types of wishes:  a trip to a theme park, a computer, a shopping spree, participating in an occupation, and meeting a celebrity.  The average Wish costs $4,000 and funding comes from individuals and corporations.  There is no government assistance. To find out more about Make-A-Wish Foundation, click on: http://www.wish.org/.  You will be glad you did.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

Happy  -  Paul Westmoreland  …  because he is going to Dinuba for a high school reunion.  Dinuba is famous because Prez Daryal, Paul, and Burt Rutan (builder of the private spaceship) all grew up there.  Dinuba may not be big, but does have a newspaper that is big enough to have an editor.

Happy  -  Doris Horwith  …  to know Dinuba has a newspaper.  Do they need a good printer?

Happy  -  Mary Gant  …  because our own Dr. Allan Perry, Jr. was just named the best plastic surgeon in Glendale.

Happy  -  Diane DellaValle  …  because Linda Magarian has submitted a membership application. Happy  -  George Lutts  …  he only spent three days on jury duty.

Happy  -  Hal Crockett  …  the Lewis and Clark movie at the IMAX is terrific

Happy  -  Chuck Gulick … he could attend his 60th high school reunion

Sad  -  Chuck Gulick  …  there were only old people at his 60th high school reunion.

Happy  -  Key Clubbers  …  because they could be at our lunch meeting.

Sad  -  Howard Backer  …  that Dinuba is in the news so much these days.

Happy  -  Howard Backer  …  because he is going on a trip to help build a house for Habitat for Humanity.
