FROSTY’S SLA REPORT

Dick DeGrey is back in the hospital due to a buildup of fluid around his heart.  He sounded very tired when Frosty talked to him on Tuesday, but the doctor’s thought Dick could go home in a day or two.  Shirley is home with her caretaker and was playing the piano when Frosty called.  It was wonderful to see Frank Williams; he brought his stepson, John Trosper, who told us plans are being made so Frank can continue coming to our weekly meetings.

THE PROGRAM

President Daryal Jelly Roll Gant

t was our new Prez Daryal Gant’s first meeting, and the Head Table was filled with Past Club Presidents (left to right) Bob Wallace, Bill Scherkey, (the Prez), Pat Anderson, Jim Reynolds, and Jim Edwards

The Head Table

Past Presidents were Prez Daryal’s support this week, but next week he will introduce his (our?) new mascot, Jelly Roll -  who hears everything and only talks to Prez Daryal in private.

Prez Daryal used this first meeting to give us an overview of this new Kiwanis year.  The following officers and committee chairmen made presentations.

InterClubs:  Paul Westmoreland, our President-Elect, introduced a new system for keeping track of who has and who hasn’t visited another Kiwanis Club.  Paul unveiled a new chart with every member’s picture.  Your picture will be removed when you attend an InterClub.  If your picture is still on The Board, everyone will know you are still on Paul’s “list.”  Once you get off The Board you will be eligible for a drawing.  Paul will be revealing the prizes contributed for the drawing as the weeks progress.  First item – a nice gentleman’s watch.

Weekly Programs:  Frank Ragazzi, our Vice President, thanked Ed Moulton for scheduling our October programs.  Frank will be scheduling our weekly speakers for the rest of year and is already putting together a dynamic lineup.  Call Frank if you have any program suggestions.

Travel Adventures:  Frank Ragazzi, wearing his Chairman’s hat, is excited about the six outstanding programs scheduled for this year.  Remember, this is one of our biggest fund-raisers – so your support is essential.  Besides, the photography is excellent and the in-person narration is both interesting and educational.  In fact, last year one of our season pass holders made a $100 donation to our Foundation because she thought the programs were so outstanding!  Come, bring a friend, and see for yourself.

Monthly Reports:  Someone has to do the dirty work, and Secretary Bill Scherkey is the person who keeps track (on a monthly basis) of all our good works and deeds.  He must submit these reports monthly and depends on our Committee Chairman to provide him with the necessary information.  Bill will contact each Chairperson and explain exactly what, how, and why.

Membership:  Chairman Karl Johnson will be using a Kiwanis “8 steps” model for planning an extra special Wednesday meeting specifically designed to interest potential members.  All we will need to do is invite some good potential members.

Karl Johnson

Newsletter:  The new editor (me) has been challenged by Prez Daryal to revamp our weekly blurb to provide more information about future events and activities and other interesting tidbits.  This will be a work in progress with much assistance from Bob Martin and Jeb Long.  Providing the newsletter in three formats (printed, email, webpage) creates some difficulties, so we will also be working on a “simplification solution.”  You will be noticing changes on a gradual basis.  Let us know what you like and don’t like.  Weekly comments are encouraged.  This newsletter is for YOU!

Publicity:  Diane DellaValle is our new Chairman and a master of delegation.  Almost new member, Linda Magarian, spoke in Diane’s absence.  Although Diane is the Publicity Chairman, it is the responsibility of each Committee Chairman to provide publicity information to DianeLinda reminded us the local weekly newspapers have a Monday deadline, so timely submission will be essential.

HAPPY & SAD BUCKS

  • Happy  -  Jack Dawson  …  because Burt Rutan and the private spaceship are somehow connected to Dinuba, the childhood home of Prez Daryal and Prez-Elect Paul Westmoreland.

  • Happy  -  Bill Watts  …  for the good food and large tea glasses at our installation banquet.

  • Sad  -  Bill Watts  …  ‘cause we are back to the small wine glasses for iced tea today.

  • Happy  -  Bea Cirar  …  she won $1,000 at the slots.  Of course, she claimed she doesn’t normally gamble.

  • Happy  -  Mary Gant  …  someone from Dinuba was named to the Tortilla Hall of Fame.

  • Sad  -  Frank Ragazzi  …  Vi was at home ill, but could have put a dollar in the pot for their anniversary if she was at the meeting.

FACTS AND FICTION

Birthdays:  Karl Johnson, Tom Slaughter, Bea Cirar, and Paul Westmoreland

Anniversarys:  Frank Ragazzi, Joan Peters

Century Club:  First member this year – Paul Westmoreland

Fifty-Fifty Drawing:  Bob Martin was the lucky winner.

Frosty’s Challenge:  Bill Watts and Karl Johnson took the challenge, but Frosty was the winner.

FINES FROM THE FLOOR

A new tradition introduced by Prez Daryal today.  Have fun!  Get even!  Embarrass your buddy!  Fine whoever you think deserves a fine.  Minimum fine $1, maximum fine $2.  For a first try, Jack Dawson tried to fine every doctor (medical or otherwise) at the meeting.  Per rulemaker Prez Daryal, Jack had to be more discriminating – so Jack picked on Elizabeth Calciano for $1.  Prez Daryal’s plan backfired when Jim Edwards fined our Prez a $1 for already misplacing his bell and gavel on his first day.  After being fined, Prez Jim realized he had misplaced his notes, too.

KIWANIS AWARDS – INTERCLUBS

Our Kiwanis Club of La Cañada has a long tradition of earning Kiwanis awards and recognition.  An InterClub occurs when at least four members from our own Club attend a meeting at another Kiwanis Club.  A Round Robin occurs when every member of our Club has attended at least one InterClub.  A Super Round Robin occurs when our Club has had an InterClub at every other Club in our Kiwanis Division.  (We are in Division 3, and there are currently twelve Clubs in our division.)
