OPENING: It was America the Beautiful as Ed Moulton directed us in our first song, followed by the salute to our flag led by Carlos Cortez. Karl Johnson gave the invocation.
GUESTS & MEMBERS WE HAVE MISSED: Diane DellaValle introduced Linda Magarian, who just retired from teaching and is ready to dive into community activities. We don’t get to see Jay Rabadi very often, but he joined us today and also brought Bill Koury. Pete Palermo was back after traveling in Hawaii and New England. We have missed Carlos Cortez, but he has been busy … including getting ready for his wedding on May 14, 2005.
HAPPY/SAD BUCKS: Glen Petit had five happy dollars for the successful Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event last Sunday. Clyde Hemphill gave one dollar because he just discovered that Pres Jim’s middle initial is “C” for “Cupcake.” It was worth one happy buck to Bill Watts because we had such nice wine glasses and good wine on Sunday, and worth one sad buck because today we once again are trying to drink iced tea out of wine glasses. Mary Gant offered several happy bucks because the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting was over and was well received; she was also happy there were so many willing Kiwanis volunteers to help with the event. Patsy Christianson was happy because she hung the first page of the Valley Sun in her garden and her garden is now bug-free. (She was referring to the grape stomping picture of Anthony Portantino.) Patsy was sad she couldn’t attend the event but was happy she was able to attend her granddaughter’s seventh birthday party. Ken Lowe had $1 for his son-in-law’s picture (at the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting) in the News Press on Monday. Jack Dawson gave a happy buck because Patsy wasn’t there on Sunday and he was able to drink her share of the wine.
CONFESSIONS, FINES, ETC: Pete Palermo joined the Century Club because he had a birthday in June. Everyone who wasn’t wearing his or her Kiwanis pin was fined $1.
GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS: Paul Westmoreland announced our Soap Box Derby cars would be on the TV program Method in Red tonight at 9:30 p.m. on Channel 11. (However, he was not endorsing the program.) Karl Johnson reminded us to keep bringing our empty printer cartridges, pull tabs, eyeglasses and cell phones for recycling. Last month our club earned $85.50 for our recycling efforts. Pres. Jim reminded us to put our October 5th Kiwanis Division 3 Installation Dinner on our calendar. Ed has election poll worker applications. This is a great opportunity to provide a public service and donate the $80 stipend to Kiwanis. Mary and Clyde had a display of all the recent newspaper articles about our Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event. They thanked a whole list of people who really helped with the event, including: Pres. Jim, Pat Anderson, Howard Backer, Carl Christensen, Don Corbett, Jack Dawson, Daryal Gant, Elizabeth Georgeon, Steve Hagerty, Harriet Hammons, Karl Johnson, Rick Lazare, Mike Leininger, George Lutes, Sookie Mathews, Ed Moulton, Allen Perry, Jr., Anthony Portantino, Bill Scherkey, Joel Smith, Melinda Thompson, Bill Watts, and Bob Wallace.
SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Next week is Pres Jim’s Swan Song, and we should attend in force to show him how much we appreciate his leadership this past year! The following Wednesday evening, September 29th, is the installation of officers and directors for the 2004-2005 Kiwanis year. Dinner will be at 7 PM preceded by a social gathering and no-host bar beginning at 6:30 PM. You need to sign-up for the installation dinner at the meeting next week.
FROSTY’S SLA UPDATE: Dick DeGrey had a difficult time last week as he was unaware his street was being torn up and wasn’t able to get transportation to several appointments. He enjoys our calls since he still isn’t able to attend our weekly meetings.
FROSTY’S CHALLENGE: Frosty had an electric Mexican story that won quite a bit of applause. Lloyd Welch claimed to tell a true story, but it was the tall tale (or long tail) of Bill Watts that won the Bag of Nuts from Pres. Jim.
PROGRAM: George Lutes introduced Bob Rhody who has lived in La Cañada 22 years and is a building contractor specializing in room additions. Bob is very active in Toastmasters, and he gave us a great overview of the organization. There are over 200,000 Toastmasters Clubs internationally. Toastmasters members meet to improve their communication skills through practice and helpful evaluation by other members. Optimum club size is 17-22 members. Some clubs are community based, while others are located at businesses or are affiliated with service clubs (principally Kiwanis) or colleges and universities.
50/50 DRAWING: Jack Dawson had the lucky ticket.
CLOSING: Pres. Jim closed the meeting after Ed led us in singing Hail Kiwanis.
