The La Kawańian

OPENING:  We were small in number but mighty in voice as Ed Moulton led us in America the Beautiful (a cappella, no less)!  Pres Jim had Mel Wilson lead the flag salute, and Frosty Boyd followed with the invocation.

CONFESSIONS, FINES, ETC:  Pres Jim caught many off guard, and fines were collected from those who hadn’t shaken hands with Bob Wallace (today’s secret greeter) and/or were not wearing their Kiwanis pin.  Confessions for September wedding anniversaries were squeezed out of Don Davidson (59th) and Hal & Julie Thomas (55th).  Don even joined the Century Club.

HAPPY/SAD BUCKS:  Clyde Hemphill had happy bucks because local Democrat (and club member), Anthony Portantino, supported our advertising efforts for the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting by having his picture taken next to the Memorial Park gazebo – stomping grapes in his bare feet.  Jack Dawson made a generous offer to help the club raise several thousand happy bucks through a fund-raising raffle.  He will donate the raffle prize - a very special custom Bentley he built several years ago.  (What an opportunity!  Thanks, Jack!!!) Bill Watts was happy he only got seasick once on his recent trip to Alaska, and sad because we were trying to drink iced tea out of wine glasses.  Pres Jim had $5 sad bucks because last weekend he and Jo found their mountain cabin had been burglarized and thoroughly trashed.  His $5 happy bucks were because he spends his time with people who work to make the world a better place (and not people who tear it down).

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1)  Pres Jim reminded everyone about the 7 p.m. Board Meeting tomorrow night (Sept. 2) which will be held at his house.

2)  Diane DellaValle thanked Clyde for helping so much with the Summer Social and thanked the rest of us for attending.  Thanked the rest of us for attending?  Diane – we thank you for doing all the planning and then missing the event because you had to work!!!  Diane had something else she wanted to say, but couldn’t remember what it was.

3)  Jack had something he wanted to forget but couldn’t remember what it was.  (Smart aleck!)

4)  Daryal announced he had postcards we could send to friends and acquaintances to invite them to our Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event on Sept. 12.  Daryal and Mary have already sent out over 200 postcards themselves.  Daryal also has flyers that can be sent in an envelope.

5)  Bachy Bachmyer reminded to help Childrens’ Hospital by contributing to the tubs on our tables.

6)  Ed Moulton encouraged us to ratchet up our newspaper donations as the Glendale Workshop is running short on supplies.   Amazing statistic – our Kiwanis Club (with the support of all our clubs for children and the AM Club) supplies over 25 tons of newspapers annually.

FROSTY’S SLA UPDATE:  Frosty encouraged each of us to take the time to call Dick DeGrey and Pat Flynn and let them know we miss them.  Neither Dick nor Pat is able to get “out and about” very often, so a friendly call with a little news adds a lot to their day.  Do you remember what “SLA” stands for?

FROSTY’S CHALLENGE:  Frosty had a pretty good story about a man who asked his wife how she could be so beautiful and stupid at the same time, but Pres Jim said George Lutes was the biggest nut in the room and awarded him the coveted bag of peanuts for his story about a man at a gravesite.

50/50 DRAWING:  Tom Gilfoy had the lucky number.

PROGRAM:  Ed Moulton introduced Katie Mach from the County Registrar’s Office.  Katie is a speaker for the Election Board and had a short talk about the shortage of poll workers.  Some of her statistics were astonishing.

The County of Los Angeles is the largest election district in the United States.

The Registrar’s office needs to find 22,000 poll workers for every election.

The average age of poll workers is 80.

One month before the March election this year, there were 3,600 positions unfilled.

A fundraising opportunity exists for our club.  Each member who serves as a poll worker can have the $80 stipend go to our club.  If we provide enough members to handle all positions at a local polling place, we can put up our Kiwanis banners, set out our brochures, wear Kiwanis T-shirts, and have the opportunity to talk to people about our club and what we do.  This could be a great opportunity for more exposure and a chance to troll for new members.  Pres Elect Daryal asked for a show of hands and many of us thought it was a good idea and worth pursuing.

CLOSING:  We ended this very interesting meeting with Hail Kiwanis.
