The La Kawanian

OPENING:  It was Apple for the Teachers Day, and Pres Jim Ackland called the meeting to order.  Ed Moulton led us in America the Beautiful, Ken Lowe led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Jack Dawson gave the invocation.

GUESTS & MEMBERS WE HAVE MISSED:  In addition to our many guests from the La Cañada Schools (who were introduced as part of the program), Pat Anderson brought two guests – Suzanne Hart (Branch Manager of La Cañada Wells Fargo) and Terry Walker (President of the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce and V.P. of the Allen Lund Company).  Ed helped us welcome everyone by leading us in song with Hi Neighbor.

CONFESSIONS, FINES, ETC:  Carl Christensen had his 41st wedding anniversary and 50th high school reunion.  Ken Lowe was celebrating his 48th wedding anniversary and Hal Crockett was celebrating his 52nd wedding anniversary.  Ken and Hal joined the Century Club.  Pres Jim fined Doris Horwith, Dr. Sue Leabo, Mike Leininger and Pat Anderson because their pictures were in the August 19th ediction of the Valley Sun.

HAPPY/SAD BUCKS:  Pat had Happy Bucks because Tom Slaughter  installed a terrific Norton Spam Blocker system on her computer at the Chamber of Commerce.  Clyde Hemphill added to the pot for the successful Summer Social on Sunday at the Toffel’s.  (The weather, food, and good company made a perfect picnic!  Many thanks to Diane DellaValle who was in charge and made it all happen – but then missed the actual party because business was so good at her store.)  Frank Ragazzi  was happy the cell tissue removed from his nose was not cancerous.  Happy travelers included Jim Reynolds who attended his annual Submarine Convention, Hal Crockett who visited his daughter in Seattle, and Howard Backer who just returned from a trip to Yellowstone and Cody (and made some comment about the mating call of the buffalo).

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:  Jim Ackland reminded everyone that our Installation Banquet will be in the evening on September 29th.   Come at 6:30 p.m. to socialize; dinner will begin at 7:00 p.m.  (We will not have a lunch meeting that day.)  Clyde encouraged everyone to attend the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting on September 12th; there are now 26 wineries committed to coming – so bring all your friends and relatives.  Daryal Gant explained that tickets can be purchased for the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting at:  (1) the LCF Chamber of Commerce, (2) LePetit Vendome, (3) Topline Wine and Spirits, or from a Kiwanian.  Any questions, call Daryal or MaryPat Anderson (Executive Director of the La Cañada Flintridge Chamber of Commerce) reminded us of the Tri-Chamber Business Expo on September 8th and the Chamber Mixer (sponsored by State Farm) on September 16thSilvia Kirkorian asked for invocation volunteers and passed around a sign-up sheet.  Frank Ragazzi reminded everyone our Travel Adventures is a big fundraiser for our club;  if every member can buy/sell at least four season tickets, it will be success.  The first Saturday evening program is Oct. 16 -            Ireland Celtic Myths & SplendorsBachy Bachmayer reminded us to support Children’s Hospital by stuffing a little something in the tubs on our lunch tables.   Ed gave an overview of the interesting Wednesday programs scheduled for September.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT – SEPTEMBER BOARD MEETING – CHANGE OF LOCATION:  The September 2nd board meeting will be held at Pres Jim Ackland’s home and will start with light desert at 7 PM.  This is the final Board meeting of the Kiwanis year.  Jim cordially invited every member and specifically encouraged ALL Board Members and Committee Chairs to attend.   Jim’s house is at 1716 Lila Lane.  Take Hillard north, and turn onto Lila Lane approximately 3/4 mile north of Foothill Blvd.

FROSTY’S SLA UPDATE:  Dick DeGrey is feeling much better and needs help with transportation.  Call Frosty or Dick if you would like to help.  Shirley DeGrey is also improving.  Pat Flynn would enjoy our phone calls; he is at home most of the time taking care of his wife.

FROSTY’S CHALLENGE:  Bill Watts took on the challenge and won.

50/50 DRAWING:  The lucky winner this week was Jim Reynolds

PROGRAM:  Sue Leabo is one of our members, but she was formally introduced as the La Cañada Superintendent of Schools by Ed Moulton.  Sue gave a short overview of the school district and commented on the strong support provided by parents and the community.  Sue introduced the members of the school board and a number of new district employees, including three psychologists, three counselors, one special education teacher, and a part-time bandleader.  Mike Leininger – principal of the high school and also one of our members – introduced three new teachers at the high school.  The principals at each elementary school introduced their new teachers; there are three at Palm Crest, three at La Cañada Elementary, and one at Paradise Canyon.

CLOSING:  Ed Moulton helped us conclude the meeting by leading us in God Bless American.  In our hearts we were also singing God Bless Our Teachers – as we left the meeting inspired by their enthusiasm and dedication.
