OPENING:  The Foothill Musical Theater made the start of our meeting quite special today.  The addition of their voices and the piano accompaniment by Lance Meredith bolstered Ed Moulton’s direction of a heartfelt God Bless America.  We couldn’t help but applaud!  President Jim Ackland led the flag salute, and Glen Pettit gave the invocation.

GUESTS & MEMBERS WE HAVE MISSED:  Matt Regan has been missed at our meetings lately, but he had a good excuse; he is engaged (and – in his own words - “off the market”) and has moved to Marina del Rey.  Mary Gant introduced Nooshin Zamab, who is a La Cañada resident and an Ambassador for the La Cañada Chamber of Commerce.  Nooshin is associated with ReMax and most of her business is in Burbank , Glendale and the Crescenta Valley .  Kiwanian Gerry Buchanan was visiting from the Glendale Main club.  Our own  honorary member, Theo Abelmann, shared the table with Ron Bittle and Andrew Haig from Anding Chiropractic

CONFESSIONS, FINES, HAPPY/SAD BUCKS:  The secret greeter was Paul Westmoreland, and a number of members – including Joel Smith - owed a dollar for not shaking his hand.  Tom Slaughter had Happy Bucks for Pres Jim who had mentioned he was really enjoying the Olympics; Tom said that was because the Olympics is getting more like it was 3000 years ago when the contestants all competed in the nude.  Matt had Happy Bucks for his engagement to Alison Russel who lives in Santa Monica , and because his La Cañada High School friend, Peter Wells, is competing in the sailing events at the Olympics.  Clyde Hemphill wondered why Pres Jim always calls him Bubbles, and his Happy Bucks were for Mary Gant who is keeping cool and holding up very well under the stress of final preparations for our Kiwanis Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting on September 12.  Don Corbett had Sad Bucks because Pres Jim forgot his birthday today, and Theo had Happy Bucks for being an Honorary Member.  Joel gave another buck (Happy) for not shaking Paul’s hand.  Ken Lowe had Happy Bucks for a wonderful vacation week in Cancun , although they had a long wait in the airport coming home.  Dave Spence contributed to the Century Club because he had his birthday and is still in his 60’s.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:  In honor of our servicemen and in memory of 9/11, Guest Ron Bittle announced a Blood Drive on September 16 being sponsored by Anding Chiropractic.  Everyone who gives blood will be entered in drawing to win a free year’s supply of gas.  Call Elena at 249-6192 to schedule an appointment.  Paul explained there is an envelope for each of us with updated inserts for our Kiwanis directory.  Frank Ragazzi talked about the schedule for the Travel Adventures, which start October 16.  Season passes for the six shows are $35, and Frank has plenty of flyers.  Mary Gant wanted to make sure everyone had our September 12th Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting on the calendar and encouraged us to invite everyone we know.  Daryal has flyers and posters available.  Bachy Bachmayer encouraged us to support Children’s Hospital by using the collection tubs on our tables.  Pres Jim reminded everyone about our Summer Social this Sunday from 1-5 p.m. at the Toffel’s house; call Diane DellaValle if you have any questions.

FROSTY’S SLA UPDATE:  Although still at home, Dick DeGrey is really enjoying our telephone calls.  Shirley is home from the hospital, but her condition has not improved.  Pat Flynn is still pleased that Joyce is feeling a bit better.  Mary Gant is walking without her cane, and Frosty said her recovery was twice as fast as should be expected.

FROSTY’S CHALLENGE:  There were plenty of challenges today, but George Lutes brought down the house with a story about Dave Spence being a Sunday School teacher and finding out that Jesus Christ was in the bathroom.

50/50 DRAWING:  Mary Gant deserved to be the winner, which she was, since she has worked so hard at getting well and never missed a beat on the preparations for the Gourmet Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event,

PROGRAM:  Ed Moulton introduced Marlys Marsteller of the Foothill Musical Theater.  Marlys explained that this is an adult theater group, and she introduced several cast members from Annie Get Your Gun.  They entertained us with a variety of musical numbers from the show,  which will be presented on October 1, 2, 3, 8, & 9 at the Lanterman Auditorium.

CLOSING:  In honor of the Olympics, we sang the Star Spangled Banner – which sounded especially good with the addition of the cast and accompanist from Foothill Musical Theater
