OPENING:  Although many were still relishing the delicious salmon lunch, Pres Jim Ackland rang the bell to start the meeting shortly after 12:30 p.m.   Frosty Boyd was our choir master and Ed Moulton played the piano while we sang America the Beautiful.  Frank Ragazzi led the flag salute; Don Davidson gave the invocation.

INDUCTION OF NEW MEMBER:  Although Harriet Hammons has attended many Kiwanis events over the years as a spouse and guest, she made the final commitment today and joined our ranks.  Howard Backer was her sponsor, and Paul Westmoreland handled the formal induction.  Harriet just retired from a lifetime teaching career, so she will have plenty of time to get involved.  Don’t think that Harriet is a newcomer to volunteerism, though.  She has been very involved in scouting for 25 years and is an active member of the Methodist Church .  Harriet has a son, daughter, son-in-law and very young grandchild.  I bet she does some non-profit volunteer babysitting, too.

GUESTS:  Mark Alexander introduced sheriff’s deputy Charles Deacon from the CV station; Charles was accompanying our program speaker.  Pat Anderson introduced her two Chamber of Commerce staff assistants, Wendy Gaynor and Stephanie Levy.  Joel Smith introduced his wife, Nana.  Patsy Christensen asked us to greet Anna Ghermezian and make a good impression on her.  Anna is the owner of Pzzaz and Patsy is encouraging her to consider becoming a member.  Pres Jim introduced our Kiwanis Division Lt. Governor, Joe Thompson.  Joe had just returned from the Kiwanis District Convention in Las Vegas , and Howard Backer announced that Joe was one of only six Super Distinguished Lt. Governors (out of approximately 35 in the CalNevHa District).  It was a great convention attended by 2,400 Kiwanians from Hawaii , California and Nevada – including Howard Backer and Melinda Thompson from our own club.  Joe encouraged all members of the club to attend the DCM (Division Council Meeting) at Verdugo Hills Hospital next Monday evening.  Paul Westmoreland introduced Bruce Campbell from the NewsPress.  We sang Hi Neighbor to welcome everyone.

HAPPY/SAD BUCKS:  :  Violet Ragazzi was marketing our Kiwanis Travelogue tickets at another event and missed our meeting today (good hustle, Violet!); Frank Ragazzi gave sad bucks for her reaction when she finds out she missed one of her favorite foods – salmon – at lunch today; it was delectable!  Pres Jim asked Frank about the rumor that he does 180 pushups every day.  Frank said it wasn’t as impressive as it sounds, since he ONLY does the pushups in sets of 30!  He started this routine in the Army and has never stopped.  Harriet has a birthday tomorrow, followed a few days later by a big retirement party at The Castaway in Burbank .  Joel Smith had happy bucks because he is retiring from JPL after 35 years; Nana had some sad bucks because Joel is retiring (marriage for better or worse but not for lunch).  Mary Gant gave $5 for the complimentary full page ad in the Outlook for our Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event.  She was very careful to make sure our guest from the NewsPress saw the ad and heard the part about “complimentary.”  Paul spent the weekend at the Pageant of Masters in Laguna Beach , which was worth several happy bucks.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS:  Our Club Standing Rules are being revised and clarified; contact Clyde if you are interested in reviewing or commenting on the changes.  Karl Johnson reminded us to keep saving aluminum pull tabs, printer cartridges, eye glasses, and newspapers.  Karl Johnson also was soliciting business ads from our club members for the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting booklet, which every attendee at the event will receive.  Diane DellaValle announced it wasn’t to late to sign up for the Summer Social on August 22; there are already 64 club members and guests on the list.  Bachy put in a good word for Children’s Hospital and requested we stuff a few bucks in the collection tubs on our tables.

FROSTY’S SLA UPDATE:  Dick DeGrey is continuing to improve and continues to walk outdoors when it is not too hot.  Unfortunatley, Shirley is about the same and is still in the hospital.  Frosty also talked to Pat Flynn.  Pat’s wife, Judy, has been quite ill, but Pat was happy that she was “doing pretty well.”  We miss you, Dick, Shirley and Pat!!!

FROSTY’S CHALLENGE:  No one was up to the challenge, so Frosty won the bag of peanuts for a joke about someone whose ancestors were half male and half female.

PROGRAM:  Our program chair, Ed Moulton, introduced deputy sheriff, Cole Speer, who is in charge of Crime Prevention at the CV station.  Cole spoke about Identity Theft and gave everyone lots of good suggestions.  He had plenty of examples to illustrate how identity theft can occur, and his dry sense of humor kept us laughing – although we were often slow to “get it.”

50/50 DRAWING:  Frosty was the winner of the drawing.
