The
La Kawañian
Bill
Watts, Guest Editors
August
4, 2004
OPENING:
It
was Wednesday again,
11:59 a.m.
Kiwanians were gathering to greet and eat.
The President in a joyful mood rang the bell and those that
heard it started to drag their bodies over to the chow line, some
were slow in moving as they were kibitzing with others & guests.
Missing was the delightful artistry of our two piano players Shirley
De Grey & Martha Crockett. Shirley
is still in the hospital and Martha
is on vacation. (We
need a piano player! Anybody
got one???) Instead we were entertained by a not so entertaining
“Boom Box”. Even with a ½ hour to eat many were still munching
when the meeting was called to order at
12:30 p.m.
This didn’t stop the meeting from progressing as the artistic duo
of Frosty Boyd (leader)
and Jack Dawson (lead
singer) led the group in singing “God Bless America”, then Carl
Christenson led the
flag salute, Silvia
Kirkorian gave the invocation and then the President perked up
and started harassing the troops.
First on his agenda was welcoming long missing Bea
Cirar & Doris Horwith.
Next
came the call for Happy & Sad Bucks,
HAPPY,
SAD, ETC. BUCKS: Jack Dawson was
happy and sad (?) that he was going to Norway Sunday; Mary
Gant was very happy for the full page ad for the upcoming Wine
& Food tasting that was put in the Outlook
gratis by former Kiwanian Linda
Bilheimer (our
thanks to the Outlook and Linda);Howard
Backer dropped in a cool fiver (he said it would have been more
but now he’s broke) for his great time at Huntington Lake with 16
members of his family; Bachy
Bachmayer briefed us about his trip to Budapest, Hungry, Poland
and Italy” Bob
Wallace offered a happy buck for the “new” Hollywood Bowl
which he says is outstanding; Violet
Ragazzi put in a happy buck to welcome Bea & Doris back and
for her husband Frank’s
great physical report; Elizabeth
C. Georgeon was happy with a buck but I couldn’t hear what
for.
THE
FROSTY CHALLENGE: In
what has become a staple of the Jim
Ackland regime, the Frosty challenge once again exposed us to
laughter. Frosty
Boyd started with a long joke, challenged by Bill
Watts and then Dr. Allen
Perry Sr. and the winner Bill
Watts who savored the prize of a bag of peanuts.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Diane DellaValle
reminded all of the upcoming Summer Social on August 22nd,
Don’t Miss It!: Karl
Johnson reminded us to keep collecting “pop tops”,
eyeglasses, printer cartridges and now Cell Phones.
He presented the club with a check for $110 for past
donations: Daryal Gant told
us about the Wine & Cheese tasting on Sept 12 and also that we
will pay $10 of every $35 ticket that is sold by a non-profit
organization i.e.: Rotary Club, Lions Club etc. A great fund raiser
for a non-profit
Club
(does this include the La Cañada High booster club etc??); Bachy
Bachmayer gave his usual impassioned speech for the Children’s
Miracle Network; Frosty Boyd
gave us an update on Dick
De Grey’s condition (he’s at home and getting out for walks)
and Shirley is still in
the hospital. He asked everyone to tell him of anyone else that is
in need.
50/50/
RAFFLE: Won
by Bea Cirar who was
happy she was back again.
THE
PROGRAM: Elizabeth Calciano Georgeon gave
a fine introduction to our speaker Craig
Van Sickle who is a TV writer and producer.
In attendance also was his daughter who was a recent Kiwanis
“Terrific Kid”. He
gave a most interesting talk on the difficulties in getting a script
accepted and then produced as a pilot and then getting the pilot
accepted and then getting it on T.V, and then not getting it
cancelled etc. This was followed by many questions from the
Kiwanians. A most
interesting program.
THE
CLOSING: The
dynamic duo of Boyd &
Dawson led us in “Hail Kiwanis”
