OPENING:  It was a beautiful day at Descanso and seemed totally appropriate for Ed Moulton to lead us in God Bless America.  Martha Crockett and Shirley DeGrey must have been vacationing, so Ed asked Marie Hyland to provide the rousing piano accompaniment.  (More about Marie later.)  Chuck Gulick led the flag salute and Glen Petit gave the invocation.  Pres. Jim Ackland then announced a change in the order of business and asked Mark Alexander give his Craft Talk.

CRAFT TALK:  Mark Alexander is our City Manager and has been involved in city government most of his life.  He grew up in San Dimas and graduated from San Dimas High School .  When he was fourteen Mark’s curiosity led him to the San Dimas City Hall where he discovered the city’s bulletin board.  A notice on the board listed an opening for a youth position on the city’s Juvenile Justice Commission.  Mark inquired about the opening – and his career started.  He served on the commission from his freshman through senior year in high school and was also active in student government.  As soon as he graduated from high school, Mark was asked to be an intern for the assistant city manager and served in that capacity while he earned his degree at Cal Poly Pomona.  He majored in Political Science and had a minor in Public Administration.  At USC Mark earned his Masters in Public Administration, and it was during that period he spent some time working for Gabby Pryor in San Dimas and was later hired as an administrative assistant by our City of La Cañada Flintridge .  Mark said he found it tough to keep up with all the attorneys in La Canada , so after a few years here he went to law school and passed the Bar.  He has been working for our city for 16 years and has been our City Manager for the past year.  When he is not working Mark plays piano and the keyboard, and – since he is single – he is occasionally able to travel with a group of friends who have a band.  Mark – we are glad you are one of us!!!  And don’t be surprised if Ed corners you, now that your musical secret is out!

GUESTS & MEMBERS WE HAVE MISSED:  Daryl Gant introduced Stephen Hagerty, who really isn’t a guest any more because he is now a member of our club.  (Darayl – you are one of our best recruiters.  Are you up to “10” yet?)   A welcome back to Mary Gant who has been absent for three weeks due to a trip (over a hose) and subsequent hip operation; she looked beautiful as always and only her wheels gave her away.  The liaison officer from the AM club was introduced on the far side of the room; unfortunately I couldn’t hear his name.  Ed Moulton introduced Margaret Pankratz, whose name is a household word in LCF.  Among many other volunteer activities, Margaret is the “mother” of Glenola Park and whips our club members into shape every Christmas getting the lights up on the trees.  Patsy Christenson missed us while she has been wandering around doing “angelic” things, and we were glad to see her after an extended absence.  Jim Reynolds and Mel Wilson introduced Jack Edwards as a possible new member.  Jack is an architect, and Pres. Jim used to sell a product which had something to do with Jack’s business.  Once Jack sent Jim to make a product presentation to Ike and Tina Turner.  Jim said in sales you are always told to make eye contact, but found it extremely difficult on this sales call.  Jim was ushered into the Turner kitchen, and in walked Ike in his birthday suit!  Joe Thompson, our Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor and AM Kiwanis Club member, just returned from the annual Kiwanis International Convention and was happy to announce our local Nelson Tucker is the new Kiwanis International Vice President.  Joe also encouraged us to attend the Kiwanis CALNEVHA (CALifornia NEVada HAwaii) convention in Las Vegas in August.  Marie and Bill Hyland, from the AM Club, were guests and also part of the program – accompanying the singer on the piano.  Harriet Hammon joined us for lunch, and we hope she’ll join our club one of these days.  It was good to see Rick Lazarre and Paul Bobzin; we miss you when you aren’t here!

FROSTY’S CHALLENGE:  Bill Watts and Clyde Hemphill did their best to outshine Frosty’s story about North Carolina men and chickens.  Bill’s tale about a dizzy blond took the honors, and we’re not sure if Clyde ’s joke about starting a flood was better or worse than Frosty’s story.

50/50 DRAWING:  Hal Thomas had the lucky number, but Julia was at his side and was probably the real winner.

CONFESSIONS AND FINES:  Hal Thomas gave back $21 of his 50/50 winnings for having a July 9th birthday.  Frosty said he would join the Century Club (if he hadn’t already) since his birthday was July 5th.  Ed led us in the Happy Birthday song.

HAPPY/SAD BUCKS:  Harriet Hammon gave $44 bucks for being “deployed” after 44 years of employment; she has retired from teaching.  Pat Anderson gave a Happy Buck because Paul Bobzin’s store was the first business Carol Liu visited in her walk through the La Cañada business community, and Paul did a fine job.  Mark gave $5 Happy Bucks because his Craft Talk was over.  Patsy gave some bucks because she was so glad to be back.  Bob Martin gave $10 as Happy/Sad bucks.  His daughter and son-in-law both landed good jobs in Colorado Springs (good), but they will be moving from here to Colorado with his three grandsons (bad).   As an aside, Bob told us that the expression “hubahuba” derives from a similar sounding Chinese word which means “good/bad” or “so so.”  Dave Spence gave a Happy Buck because he hopes Margaret Pankratz will join the club, and if she does she will be president within thirty days.  (Joan Peters earlier testified that Margaret’s feet hit the floor running every day.  How else could she accomplish so much in our community?)  Ken Lowe gave a Happy Buck because there was good publicity in the paper for our two Key Club members who were recipients of scholarships from our Kiwanis Club.  Daryal Gant gave some Happy Bucks because Mary can get out and about; he just thinks her red wheel chair should have racing stripes.  Clyde Hemphill was also happy Mary was back and gave a Happy Buck because she isn’t spending all her time at the computer making “to-do” lists for him.  (They are co-chairs of the Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting event/fundraiser – coming up in September.)  Paul Bobzin contributed a Happy Buck because his good neighbor, Nellie Lockman, arrived with her daughter Kimberly.  (See the program notes below.)  Ed Moulton threw in a Sad Buck because we had so many Happy Bucks we used up five minutes of our program time.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  None.  We ran out of time.

PROGRAM:  Lovely Kimberly Lockman was introduced by Ed Moulton.  She didn’t really need an introduction.  Kim has performed for us for seven years.  She was a soloist with the Foothill Summer Theatre for six years and last year she performed as part of the Brass and Sass duo.  We knew it was going to be a most enjoyable program even before Kim started singing from her repertoire of musical hits.  In addition to simultaneously attending four different colleges (to get the classes she needs), Kim has been singing as a volunteer at Huntington Hospital .  She was asked to do this after she sang at the hospital to a dying friend and the staff noticed how helpful this was to her friend.  Kim has been singing at Penelope’s Café in La Canada and is available for weddings, parties, and other occasions.

CLOSING:  We all sang Come On Kiwanis directed by Ed.
