June
30, 2004
Shirley
DeGrey
entertained everyone before the meeting with a great selection of
tunes. It was a
very special treat when Jimmy
Weldon presented an informative and inspiring account
(from the flag’s point of view) of the history of Old Glory prior
to leading us in the flag salute.
Jimmy had us reciting the pledge at an enthusiastic and
vigorous pace – much like the way Ed
Moulton leads us when singing our patriotic song –
which he did. Howard
Backer followed that rousing beginning with the
invocation.
Guests:
Daryl Gant
introduced Steve Hagerty
who joined us for his third visit and has submitted his application
to join the club. Tom
Slaughter introduced his newest employee, Roland
Gonzaga, who is a computer
specialist. Ken
Lowe introduced Key Clubbers Christine
Dai who will be attending UCLA in the fall and President Maressa
Takahashi (who later in the program graciously thanked us
for the scholarship we gave her).
Everyone
was happy Theo Abelman
also joined us for lunch.
President Jim tried to introduce Jim Edward’s new wife, but
she wasn’t there . . . so where was she, Jim?
Happy/Sad
Bucks:
Only Tom Slaughter
gave a buck and he called it a scary buck.
On his return trip from the east coast last week someone
grabbed him over the back of his airplane seat, and that
“someone” turned out to be none other than Sheila
Cook. For
lack of any other hands in the air, President Jim asked Jim
Reynolds if he was wearing his Kiwanis pin and then
proceeded to fine everyone who was not wearing a pin
Joke
Contest:
Every contestant received laughs today and very few groans.
Frosty
Boyd had a story
about a widow and Al Perry
Sr. told a joke about the Golden Years.
Audience reaction was somewhat delayed after Jack
Dawson related a ribald story about a senior with palsy;
it took some of us a moment or two to “get it.”
However, the award-winning joke was told by Theo
Abelman and had to do with a
minister praying for kidneys and loose livers.
Announcements:
Karl
Johnson encouraged
us to continue bringing in our used printer
cartridges; the club earned $81 for the ones Karl
collected during the last few months.
Diane
Del Valle
described the Glendale Kiwanis Club’s Jazz
Festival last Saturday as another big success, and our
club received $375 for the tickets purchased by our club members.
Diane also reminded us of the Summer
Social which will be held on Sunday, August 22.
Bachy
asked us to fill the Children’s’
Hospital tubs, and Clyde
Hemphill requested our notice of the hand held mike which
was working very well.
Clyde
also shared that Mary Gant
is generating an ever-expanding list of “to dos” for him; since
her body hasn’t been too cooperative lately, her lack of
locomotion is just giving her more time to plan for our second
annual Wine and Food Tasting
which is scheduled for September 12.
Mary and
Clyde
expect the event to
attract twice as many attendees this year, and they are looking
for volunteers to become involved with the planning and
execution of this fundraiser.
Howard
Backer
reminded everyone about the board
meeting on July 1 (tomorrow) at
7 p.m.
Howard needs the June report from all committee
chairs.
Raffle:
Al Perry Jr. had
the winning raffle ticket . . . but what was it worth?
Program:
Ed
Moulton introduced
Jimmy Weldon who is a
member of the Hollywood Kiwanis Club and a motivational speaker.
He had already motivated us to really think about our flag
and what it stands for. He
continued in the same vein with a most interesting and dynamic
presentation on the history of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of
Rights. We couldn’t
help but feel very proud to be Americans.
A great pre-July 4th topic!
