The La Kawañian

June 9, 2004

Jim Renolds, Guest Editor

Prior to opening Martha Crockett played her beautiful music to entertain us all. Then Ed Moulton led a spirited “Star Spangled Banner”. Guests were Alice Wiley, wife of our speaker, Dick Barley of the AM Club, Bob Peterson, and Past President of the Montrose Club who brought an interclub. Tom Gilfoy brought Hugh Burten who is the famous goat herder of the 320 goats on the hill above Descanso Gardens.

Mary Gant had happy bucks for her new tires. Paul Westmoreland for a happy wrap-up on the soap box derby and Karl Johnson celebrated a great football party at his home. Pat Anderson brought several chamber of commerce guests, Howard Backer complained about missing things.  Is an audit in order?

Daryal Gant was proud of the young man who was the state wrestling champion on at only 105 pounds. Dick de Grey was proud that Shirley got her permanent Kiwanis badge and Hal Crockett was proud that Martha got her permanent badge.

For the Frosty Joke challenge, his story ended up in a casket.  However the good news was that He is still moving.  Bill Watts told of a kid who clucks like a chicken. When mom was asked why she didn’t stop him, she answered, “Because we need the eggs."

We still need more volunteers for the pet clinic for June 26. The wine and food tasting working committee will meet on Tuesday JUNE 22.  Pat Anderson and Ken Lowe attended the La Cañada High school awards banquet where over one quarter of the class got top scholarship awards.

Hal Thomas got the white ball on the drawing.  That means that there is only one ball left in the bag, the red one. (can you believe that?)  So the winning ticket for the next drawing should be worth more than $500.  Make sure you buy some extra tickets for the GREAT RAFFLE.

Our speaker was Charles Wiley, a reporter for 30 years. He is an outstanding speaker who travels a lot and knows much about youth.  He speaks to many young people. Charlie's theory is that the media is our number one problem in this nation. The media decides issues.

The objective reporter tries to inform you. The advocate reporter tries to influence you. You must review the story carefully before you make up your mind who is right. Good message and a good program.

ED MOULTON CLOSED WITH HAIL KIWANIS. SEE YOU NEXT WEEK FOR THE BIG PAY OFF!
