The La Kawañian

June 2, 2004

Paul Westmoreland, Guest Editor

Today the Kiwanis recognized our clergy on “Clergy Recognition Day”.

There was a very good turn out with 84 Kiwanians and guests.

Opening:  Shirley DeGrey entertained us with some delightful piano playing and got a big hand.  President Jim Ackland brought the meeting to order.  Ed Moulton led us in a rousing patriotic song--"God Bless America "—Dick DeGrey led the flag salute and Rev. Chuck Osburn, La Cañada Presbyterian Church, gave the invocation.

Program:  Special Recognition and Honors for the Reverend Monsignor FRANCIS T. WALLACE, Pastor St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church.

Jim Ackland introduced the Master of Ceremony the Hon. Anthony J. Portantino.  After entertaining us with a few humorous stories Anthony recognized the clergy of our community introducing Pastor Bruce Johnson, Pastor, Lutheran Church in the Foothills; Rev. Kevin Kesler, Associate Pastor, St. Bede the Venerable; Rev. Dr. Rick Pomphrey, Deacon, St. Bede the Venerable; Father Matt Elshoff, President, St. Francis High School; Rev. Chuck Osburn, Associate Pastor, La Cañada Presbyterian Church; Rev. Judy Durff, Associate Pastor La Cañada Presbyterian Church; Mr. Jay Johnson, representing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints; Rev. Rob Calderhead, La Cañada Methodist Church; Skip Linderman, Church of the Lighted Window.

Anthony went on the introduce guests who had come to honor Monsignor Wallace.  In the audience were members of the Italian Catholic Federation, a number of St. Bede’s family, La Cañada City Council, La Canada Mayor, the Hon. Laura Olhasso, Kiwanis AM Club, Chamber of Commerce, representatives from Carol Lui’s office and others.

Anthony read a few humorous church related items that he had picked up  on the internet suh as “don’t let worry kill you, let the church help”.  He then introduced the La Cañada Mayor, the Hon. Laura Olhasso who thanked everyone for their Fiesta Day Support giving special attention to the Kiwanis’s Soap Box Derby.  She raced in the Celebrity Race, having great fun.  She mention Congressman Dreier’s race against Captain Tim Peters, Captain CV Sheriff Station.  No one told Congressman Dreier where the brake was and he crashed, full speed into the hay bales at the end of the track. I’m sure he will be reminded of this for years to come. The mayor recognized the contributions the Reverend Monsignor has made to the community and wished him the very best for his new assignment.

The mayor was followed in recognizing the Rev. Monsignor by Mike Smith, Parishioner, St. Bede the Venerable and Father Matt Elshoff, President St. Francis High School .

Al Restivo introduced the Guest of Honor, Rev. Monsignor Francis t. Wallace.  The Rev. Monsignor addressed the audience, recognizing the other clergy with whom he has had a long term relationship.

In 1994 Monsignor Wallace succeeded Monsignor Leland Boyer as pastor of St. Bede

THE Venerable Church in La Canada Flintridge. For the past 10 years, as pastor, Monsignor Wallace was instrumental in the development of the planning and implementation of a major building drive.  Through his dedicated leadership and determination, almost $8 million was raised to build a state-of-the-art Catholic Education Center to serve the needs of the children of the parish both through its parochial school and its Religious Education program.  Additionally Monsignor Wallace worked hard to make another dream come true. . . the construction of a fully functioning Parish Center with meeting rooms and offices to serve the many needs of the active parish.

Monsignor Wallace is leaving La Cañada Flintridge to take on a new role as a professor of Canon Law at St. John Seminary in Camarillo .  He will also serve the Archdiocese as a consultant on matters of Canon Law.

Following Monsignor Wallace’s remarks the Benediction was given by the Rev. Bruce Johnson.

Ed Moulton lead the group in the adjournment song “Amazing Grace”.

Jim Ackland presented the Monsignor with a Kiwanis coffee cup and closed the meeting.
