The La Kawañian

May 25, 2004

Bill Watts, Guest Editor

Spring is here, the grass is riz, and everywhere you look at Descanso Gardens the flowers is… Added to this beautiful setting of our Noon repast was the majestic music of Martha Crockett as she serenaded gregarious Kiwanians with grand music to gladden our mood.  Before you knew it “Mr. K”, “Mr. Ed” (etc.) Ed Moulton popped up to center stage like a 20 year old (rather than an 88 year old) and led us vigorously in “God Bless America”.

Tom Stafford (with a surprised look on his face) led us in the Flag salute. A meaningful prayer was presented by Karl Johnson and then President Jim started off with a bang (this isn’t the 4th of July Jim!) as he searched the gathering for Guests who were: George Kolanta, guest of Jeb Long. Also Introduced was Roger Files, the husband of our speaker. Roger was a Lt. Col. and flew a P-47 in WW2.

“Mr. Ed” then led us in (da da da da) Hi Neighbor (bang, bang, bang on the table).

Melinda Scherkey introduced 2 “Terrific Kids” and their parents from La Cañada Elementary: Wendy Van Sickle & her parents Craig & Aridae and Jonathan Sparks &his mother Lynne.  After Melinda’s long list of the programs and achievements of these youngsters it’s no wonder they are “Terrific Kids”.

HAPPY , SAD, (& WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BUSINESS BUCKS?):

Mary Gant started the bucks flowing by pitching in a fiver for Tom Slaughter who is coming on strong as a “real” member as he was attending an interclub; George Lutes popped in a buck as Doris Horwith did a great job on printing the Soap Box Derby programs; Hal Crockett put in bucks for his daughters (good job at something?); PP Pat Anderson had bucks for the upcoming Fiesta Days weekend, the parade will have over 120 entries this year (a record); Jim Reynolds offered to share his pictures and story about this his trip to South America where they traversed over 25,000 miles.

THE FROSTY CHALLENGE:

After Frosty’s “shaggy dog” story he was challenged by Bill Watts & Pat Anderson with their story’s.  And the winner: Pat Anderson.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  Joel Smith reminded all about the Soap Box Derby this Saturday.  Help is still needed especially a driver with an SUV and a trailer hitch.  The brains have been meeting for months to produce this race, now its time for the “brawns” to help out; Karl Johnson reminded all to bring used cell phones, glasses, and printer cartridges in and presented a check to our charity for $159 for past collections. He went on to thank Ed Moulton for graciously consenting to match the amount raised by the Builders Club in their fund raising efforts: Carl Christensen reminded the “hamburger helpers” to show up to cook on Monday at 11 am (more helpers always needed); Silvia Kirkorian said she was passing around a sign up sheet for the invocations; Pat Anderson expounded on the Fiesta Days celebration this weekend with Fireworks and a great B-B-Que. (catered by Arbor Crest) that starts at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday night; Bachy Bachmayer urged bucks for the table tubs for the Children’s Hospital; Diane DellaValle urged all to buy tickets for the Jazz Festival as we get $15 back for each and also pitched the upcoming (August 22nd) “Summer Social” and asked all to sign up for what delicacy they will bring. Ken Lowe read a Thank You note (on official Key Club Stationary) from the Key Clubers who “took over out meeting and they mentioned they especially liked the food and it was great fun.

THE RAFFLE:

Diane DellaValle had the winning ticket and there was a hush in the audience as she approached the podium.  With only 2 white balls left and the coveted orange ball, would she draw the orange ball and receive $300 plus dollars…  (drum roll please) Ohhhhhhhhhhh she didn’t.  This means next week there will be only 1 white ball left… Who will be the winner??

THE PROGRAM:

An exciting story of the “Belgium Underground’ during WWII was told by Yvonne Files.  Her activities included Espionage, Sabotage, and sheltering of Allied Airmen. She was betrayed and arrested by the German SS in July 1944 and spent many months in solitary confinement where she was subjected to daily interrogations and beatings.  She was condemned to death by hanging but liberated 10 days before the execution date.

Our Speaker, Yvonne Files introduced by Mary Gant (Left)
