The
La Kawañian
May 19, 2004
Mary Gant, Guest Editor
Our
Cabaret pianist, Shirley
DeGrey, got us in a happy mood with her lively music, we were
all tapping our toes. We
gave thunderous applause in response.
Ed
Moulton
lead us in a snappy rendition of ‘You’re a Grand Old Flag’.
The
pledge to our flag was led by Don
Davidson and Melinda
Thompson gave a very inspiring inspirational.
Our
own Bob Wallace was
welcomed back from several weeks in the
Caribbean
doing a barefoot cruise, yep, we checked, he had shoes on.
You know, No Shoes, No Shirt, etc.
The
FilAm did a ½ Interclub as Nini
Maldonado, club president and Lila
Santos, club secretary were introduced.
Actually Nini
acted as emergency driver as she dropped off a FilAm member at the
hospital who had heart palpitations on the way to our meeting, but
undaunted Nini continued
to La Cañada. Meanwhile
Lila was on the phone
receiving assurances from the fourth member that she was on her way.
Oh the trials of inter-clubbing.
Pres Jim
announced that anyone who had not greeted the FilAm ladies must put
in $’s. Nice going,
we made a bundle on that one.
Happy/Sad
Bucks:
Tom Slaughter
gave a sad buck because it had been pointed out by several members
that he had attended three weeks in a row; Tom
promised a $5 contribution next week if he were simply greeted as a
regular member with no mention being made about his absences. Editor’s
note: Tom has hired and
trained an assistant or two and now has some time off, so
congratulate him.
Clyde
Hemphill gave many
bucks; first for the Jeb’s
marriage and then for the wonderful reception that he and Marilyn
gave in celebration at the Annandale Country Club.
Clyde
contributed more for George
Lutes, putting the Soap Box Derby Program on a disc and that it
is now with Doris Horwith
for printing. Nini
Maldonado gave a sad buck for the missing two inter-clubbers.
Pat Anderson
gave for her daughter’s wonderful promotion, she was promoted out
of one company and into another with more responsibilities, a higher
position and probably lots more $$$’s. Jack
Dawson also ponied up a
dollar or two but editor was distracted and just wishes to thank Jack
for the donation. Al
Restivo had either a happy or a sad buck for getting to sit
beside his favorite Democrat. Mary
Gant gave a happy buck for the interclub.
Daryal Gant
gave a happy buck or two for the Celebrity Racers in the upcoming
Soap Box Derby.
Joke
Challenge:
Frosty gave it
his all first by telling about two guys digging and filling holes;
then at Pres Jim’s
insistence, told about a guy getting fired from the orange juice
factory because he couldn’t concentrate.
Next was Al Restivo
telling about the marriage of two TV antennas and how the wedding
was lousy but the reception was great.
But, alas, funnyman, George
Lutes, came through by telling about a drunk coming home late
but fortunately uttered the magic words, “Stop, I’m a married
man..” He had us
rolling on the floor, yet again.
Announcements:
President Jim
announced the great accomplishments of those who work with K-Kids
and with the brilliant idea of giving a pizza party for the winning
room, George Lutes and Carl
Johnson got the kids to contribute 50# of pull-tabs, wow!
That would be about 7 grocery sacks filled.
Anthony Portantino
told us that the annual Pet Clinic will be June 10 at the same place
as last year. He
didn’t tell us where that is he just requested that those of us
who have assisted in the past show up and assist again this year.
Diane DellaValle
asked that any of us who will not be in St. Louis at the
International Convention purchase tickets to the Glendale Kiwanis
Club’s annual Jazz Festival and that half of the purchase price
comes back to our club, a win/win situation because we make money
and those who go get to enjoy first rate jazz bands.
There is also a dinner at the festival so let her know if you
would like to go to that. As
Social Chair Diane
reminded us of the August Social on Sunday, August 27th,
at the Toffel’s lovely
estate and asked that you respond to the clip board going around.
Pat Anderson announced the many festivities and goings on
for La Cañada Flintridge’s Fiesta Days and asked us to note that
the first thing listed is our own Soap Box Derby.
Paul Westmoreland
reminded all of our annual Soap Box Derby and requested assistance
from every member to make this a success by being there and working.
Just see Paul or Jack
Dawson if you want a specific assignment.
Be there or be square! Al
Restivo told that Clergy Recognition will be June 2.
Raffle:
Bill Scherkey
announced that to begin with Dick
DeGrey had to be given an opportunity to pull the orange ball
that would be worth about $350 from Dick’s
ticket being pulled last week but he wasn’t given the chance to
select the winning ball. Nope,
Dick pulled a white
ball. President
Jim announced the winning number for this week after many
minutes, and we were about to pull another number, when Dick
DeGrey realized he had this week’s winning number.
Back Dick up to
the podium, but, heck, he pulled another white ball with the jackpot
being around $400. O.k.
folks, we’re down to 2 white balls and the elusive orange one.
How many more weeks before we have a winner with an armored
truck?
Program:
Hal Crocket
introduced Bob Bittenger
of
Hanover
,
Pennsylvania
noting that Bob was a graduate of
San Diego
State
, as is Bob’s wife. They
are the parents of a biological son and adoptive parents of a Korean
orphan and a Bulgarian orphan.
Bob said that back in 1992 when they went to
Bulgaria
to get their daughter they noted the poor condition of the children
and the orphanage. He
and his wife vowed to help improve the circumstances of these
children. They began
with that one orphanage by coming home and raising monies for
medicine and other necessities.
Within a few years they became a 501C organization and were
assisting several orphanages. This
aid grew to the point that it was more than the two of them could
handle. Bob approached
the Hanover Kiwanis who took up the challenge.
Today the Pennsylvania Kiwanis and Kiwanis International are
totally involved and support 42 orphanages that serve over 3000
children aged from birth to 3 years.
Bob is out recruiting other clubs to ‘Adopt an Orphanage’
as it costs only $25 per child, per year.
If you adopt, your organization receives an annual visit from
a Pennsylvania Kiwanian who will report on your specific orphanage
with photos and reports of what your organization bought.
Bob left a recruiting video.
Several of us expressed an interest.
We
were adjourned with Songbird,
Ed, leading us in
an exciting rendition of “Come
on Kiwanis.”
