The La Kawañian

April 28, 2004
Barry Riedel, Editor

Opening:  Martha Crockett entertained us with some Broadway tunes and established favorites--and got a vigorous round of applause.  President Jim Ackland brought the meeting to order.  Ed Moulton led us in "God Bless America " (verse first).  Frank Ragazzi led the flag salute.  Bill Scherkey gave the invocation.

Guests:  Howard Backer introduced his lovely wife Rhoda--the two soon approaching their 24th wedding anniversary.  Bill Watts introduced the lady who cost him $50 last week for their wedding anniversary.  Jack Dawson introduced his wife Barbara--Jack and Barbara have celebrated their 49th.  Barbara belongs to PEO (Phone Each Other).  Ed Moulton led us in a rousing "Hi Neighbor!" and a "Happy Birthday" to Jack Dawson.  Jim Ackland presented Jack with a priceless gift.  How priceless?  Well, pretty priceless!

Happy/Sad Bucks:  Clyde Hemphill was sergeant-at-arms.  Matt Regan was happy he found his way back.  Dave Spence gave for his neighbor Jack Dawson who rescued his old truck and recharged its batteries.  And: for Bill and Margaret Watts who bought one of Dave's neighbor's  dogs.  Pat Anderson gave a sad buck for Daryal Gant's new look (the Kenny Rogers beard).  Mary Gant gave a happy buck for Daryal's happiness at not having to shave.  Daryal Gant gave a happy buck and a sad buck.  Happy:  great trip to So. African.  Sad: he and Mary just got back from a trip to So. African.   (It seems Mary Gant could not tell the difference between Daryal's snore and a lion roar.  Hal Crockett gave for he and Martha enjoying a trip to the great state of Texas .  Bob Wallace gave what must be a happy buck for his up-coming trip to the Caribbean.  Mike Leininger gave a happy buck for the best-tasting chicken of the year.  Bill Watts gave for the hardworking Soap Box Derby committee.  Jim Ackland amen'd that with a buck.

Frosty's Challenge:  Frosty Boyd picked one about a cow being tracked by our government but they can't locate 11 million illegal aliens in our country.  Should we give every illegal alien a cow?  Elizabeth Georgeon presented one about an older gentleman worried about his wife's hearing.  Jack Dawson related a "true story" about when Barbara and he were in high school together and a friend who chewed gum all the time.  Elizabeth Georgeon won!

Announcements:  Bob Wallace gave the report from the Nominating Committee for the candidates for offices.  The nominating committee reports the following candidates:  President Daryal Gant, President-Elect Paul Westmoreland, Vice-President Open, Secretary/Treasurer Howard Backer.  Directors for a two-year term: George Lutes, Bob Martin, Barry Riedel, Melinda Thompson, Lloyd Welch.  Director for a one-year term:  Frank Ragazzi.

May 12 will be the annual meeting.  They are hoping to get the position of vice-president filled before the election.  Offices will start in October.

Ed Moulton announced that our Builder's Club will put on a car wash in front of the rental building of the Sports Chalet one week from Saturday.  Anybody willing to spare an hour or two to be a driver?  Contact Karl Johnson or Ed Moulton.

Diane DellaValle informed us that the tickets for the jazz festival can be billed to your account.  Jazz festival starts at 12Pm and goes to 11PM .

Bachy Bachmayer reminded us to put our donations in the tubs for Children's Hospital which is opening a Play and Meditation Park this summer.

Silvia Kirkorian passed around the invocation sign-up sheet.   Sign up!

Paul Westmoreland announced that the Soap Box Derby meeting is on Monday evening instead of Tuesday evening meeting.  At Jack Dawson's house.

New Member:  Violet Ragazzi was inducted as a new member into the Club.  Looking on proudly was her sponsor Doris Horwith.  Violet got her certificate of membership, her temporary badge, her pin--and from Howard Backer her first bill!

Ed Moulton led us in "You're In Kiwanis Now".

Ruby K Award:  Paul Westmoreland gave out a Ruby K pin to Daryal Gant for bringing in eight (8) new members!

Last But Not Least:  Howard Backer let us know that the Community Prayer Breakfast will be on May 13.  We have two tables reserved.  Doors open at 6:30AM .  Breakfast at 7:00AM .

Fines:  Jim Ackland fined those who did not shake Ken Lowe's hand--the secret greeter.  And ditto for those who were not wearing their pin.

Jim Ackland told us that it used to be pleasant to go to the Hollywood Bowl.  Jim remembered one evening--raining--when Judy Garland gave a stirring show.  But Jim would not trade an evening at the Bowl with Judy Garland for . . . for . . . the joys of the Pasadena Pops!

(Which was a segueway to:)

Program:   Tom Gilfoy introduced Rachel Worby to speak about the Pasadena Pops.   Rachel is now a resident of LCF.  Her goal is to make us competitive with the Boston Pops.  She has done a wonderful job.

Mark Your Calendars:  June 25, 26; July 16, 17; August 20, 21; September 10, 11.  "Summer Nights Live" at Descanso Gardens .  626 792 7677  pasadenapops.org

50/50:  The pot was about $370-380.  Hal Crockett won!  With 6 balls left in the bag, Hal drew . . . (drum roll) . . . a white ball!  So the pot continues to grow.

Closing:  Ed Moulton led us in "Hail Kiwanis!"

Erratum:  It Was A Great Program But Where Was The Snow?   The program for May 12, was announced as “Ken Lowe and the Ski Club”.  It, however, will not be Ken Lowe's "Ski Club" but Ken Lowe's "Key Club".

Special Announcement:  Services for Bill Dewey—past president of the club in 1979-1980—will be held at the La Cañada Presbyterian Church next Tuesday, May 4, 2004 at 4PM .

Soap Box Derby :  The 5th annual Greater Los Angeles Soap Box Derby sponsored by our club will be on Saturday, May 29th this year.  This is a service project that had 58 racers last year and we expect at least that amount this year.  This project is great one to help with.  It does take a Saturday, but is usually rewarding in seeing the excited kids during the race.  Committee chairmen will be asking for help.  This is a great activity to support.
