The La Kawañian

April 21, 2004
Barry Riedel, Editor

Opening:  Shirley DeGrey tinkled the ivories to provide us-all with delightful piano music and got a big hand.  President Jim Ackland brought the meeting to order.  Ed Moulton led us in " America ".  Chuck Gulick led the flag salute.  Don Davidson gave the invocation.

Guests:  Bill Scherkey proudly introduced daughter Nicole who lives in Minneapolis , Minn. and grandson Sam..  Dr. Sue Leabo introduced Claudia Alequin for Secretary's Day.  Bachy Bachmayer introduced his son John Bachmayer, an attorney. Al Restivo gave the intro to Dr. Lynn Gabriel, running for State Assembly in 44th.  Ed Moulton was dragged away from getting coffee to lead us in a rousing "Hi Neighbor".

Birthdays:  Sue Leabo was squealed on for having one April 15.  Clyde Hemphill informed us that people who have birthdays are usually very happy--so happy that they donate generously to the club.  And Sue Leabo did so--although she asked for change seeing as that she wanted to be younger!  Ken Lowe had a birthday today and also donated generously.  Bill Watts had an anniversary--actually his wife has an anniversary and it falls on the same day as his!  Bill kicked in for half of a Century Club.  Ed Moulton--although he was eating--led us in "Happy Birthday" to Sue and Ken.

Happy/Sad Bucks:  Bob Martin gave a couple to welcome back Jack Dawson from Louisiana , covered in alligators and hot sauce.  Barbara and Jack had a lovely trip to Cajun-ville.  Maybe there is a program in our future?  Melinda Thompson gave for Sam and Nicole and a family trip to Las Vegas where they picked up a new dog.  They all drove back.  The dog too?  Sam was given his own leash for the new dog.  Joel Smith announced that 42nd anniversary falls in this month, along with his wife's 56th birthday which all added up to a Century Club. Frank Ragazzi gave for having surgery on his left eye and the eye is doing great.  So is Frank.

Frosty's Challenge:  Frosty Boyd gave out with a joke about Roe (Row, row row) v. Wade.  Is there an echo in here?  Didn't we have this last week?  George Lutes followed up with one about some hikers and pepper spray and starving bears.  Do you know the difference between black bears and grizzly bears?  Howard Backer joined the fray with a story about some golfers and a celphone call from an eager shopper.  Tom Gilfoy told a funny story in honor of Jack Dawson--about the goat herd here in Descanso and a little short goat who didn't take No for an answer.  Tom Gilfoy won with the story about the short goat!

Awards:  Last week we had Legion of Honor awards.  Clyde Hemphill went to the DCM meeting on Monday and announced we gave out seven Legion of Honor awards.  Paul Westmoreland gave out  Ru      by K awards for bringing in three new members--there is another award for 5--and one for 10.  Even though the District made a mistake and sent only the 5-members, Paul gave out the 5-member pins to the 3-member honorees Jack Dawson (3) and Tom Gilfoy (3) Dick DeGrey (7), and Joel Smith (3)   Jim Reynolds, Pete Palermo and Daryal Gant will be in the future.

Announcements:  Diane DellaValle announced the Jazz Festival Saturday June 26--12Noon-11PM.  The Glendale club presents this event.  The Dine-Around is meeting with problems as to the date so it will be cancelled and in its place we will carpool to the Jazz Festival.  $15 comes back to the club for every ticket we buy.  The jazz is reportedly terrific.  Tickets are $30.00.    If we get our reservations in before the First of June we get the $15 each to the club.  Free shuttles all day long from the parking lot to the Festival.  We could also charter a bus!  There is also a Creole Dinner:  two seatings, 5PM and 7PM .  Let Diane know if you wanna go!

Clyde Hemphill informed us about the latest DCM meeting:  New members should try to attend a meeting.  Third Monday of every month at Verdugo Hills Hospital .  We have brought in 6 new members since the start of the year.  Only one club was ahead of us.  The Travel Adventures completed 6 show with over 1,000 people attending.  Dining for Youth.  Soap Box Derby .  La Canadian of the Year.  7 Legion of Honor awards.  It's interesting to hear about what's going on with the other clubs.

Dick DeGrey told us about May 5 2004 11:15AM--the  La Canadian of the Year luncheon.  Are you coming?  Note the time change.  Let Dick know.  He has to tell the caterer how many we will have--deadline 4/26!  We will have a special lunch so we need to tell the caterer how many we will have.  Also we need guests' names for name tags.  There is a sign-up sheet.  Cheryl Carbonetti is the honoree.  The AM club might have 12 or so in attendance.  Cheryl is the president-elect of the AM club.  They may have 25-50 people present so we have to top them.  Diane DellaValle will begin to call all unresponding members to see if we get a Yes or a No.

Program:  3 craft talks from new members in the order of induction.

Mike Leininger started--recounting his history in teaching and education.

Frank Ragazzi told us about growing up in New Jersey , WWII, pilot training and test-piloting.  He had an auto parts store for 23 years and has been in real estate for 32 years.

Violet Ragazzi told us a story about her birth and childhood in West Virginia .  Violet started singing as soon as she started talking--perhaps the result of coming from a musical family.  She has studied music and dance extensively.  She has sung operate in the semi-professional class and has toured Europe .  On September 14, 2001   she married Frank Ragazzi.

50/50:  $340 was in the pot for the winner!  Violet Ragazzi drew Frosty Boyd's ticket!   Frosty reached in the bag and drew out . . and . . . (tick, tick, tick) . . a white ball!  No folks, there is really an orange ball in the bag.  There is (are?) a total of six balls remaining in the bag.

Closing :  Ed Moulton led us in "Hail Kiwanis!"

Soap Box Derby :  The 5th annual Greater Los Angeles Soap Box Derby sponsored by our club will be on Saturday, May 29th this year.  This is a service project that had 58 racers last year and we expect at least that amount this year.  This project is great one to help with.  It does take a Saturday, but is usually rewarding in seeing the excited kids during the race.  Committee chairmen will be asking for help.  This is a great activity to support.
