Diane DellaValle announced the Jazz Festival Saturday June 26. The Glendale club presents this event. The Dine-Around is meeting with problems as to the date so it will be cancelled and in its place we will carpool to the Jazz Festival. $15 comes back to the club for every ticket we buy. The jazz is reportedly terrific. Tickets are $30.00. If we get our reservations in before the First of June we get the $15 each to the club.

Dick DeGrey told us about May 5 2004 11:15AM--the La Canadian of the Year luncheon. Are you coming? Note the time change. Let Dick know. We will have a special lunch so we need to tell the caterer how many we will have. Also we need guests' names for name tags. There is a sign-up sheet. Cheryl Carbonetti is the honoree.

The AM club might have 12 or so in attendance. Cheryl is the president-elect of the AM club. They may have 25-50 people present so we have to top them.

New Members: We had three new members to install. Paul Westmoreland did the honors. Frank Ragazzi and Violet Ragazzi and Delores "Dodie" Ulrich . Violet Ragazzi was not present inasmuch as she was not feeling well. Doris Horwith is the sponsor of Frank Ragazzi. Frank is a Kiwanian from Colorado. He was originally a New Yorker. He served in WWII training pilots. He is in the real estate business. He is a recent newlywed to Violet who will be joining us also.

Diane DellaValle as sponsor introduced Dodie Ulrich who works as assistant director of Learning Tree. Dodie has a soft spot in her heart for children and devotes much of her time to Five Acres--a center for abused children. She took in two abused children into her home for over a year, substantially helping the kids. Dodie grew up here and moved to Colorado. She has her real estate and unfortunately just lost her mother.

Ed Moulton led us in "You're In Kiwanis Now".

Secret Greeter: Tom Stafford. If you didn't have your pin, put a buck in the pot.

Happy/Sad Bucks: Ken Lowe gave a happy buck for Dave Hemstreet who endured the Key Club trip with him. Hal Crockett gave a sad buck for Howard Backer who lost his sister. Jim Reynolds gave for being among the missing for the next 3 weeks. He is going to South America to see all the countries. Barry Riedel emptied all the $1 from his wallet for (happy bucks) Melinda Thompson, Bill Scherkey, Howard Backer, Clyde Hemphill and of course Ed Moulton for their aid & assistance on the Travel Adventures. And a sad buck for (see errata below) Anthony Portantino announced that last week he became Mayor Pro Tem of La Cañada Flintridge and gave generously. Anthony got a big hand. Clyde Hemphill gave for Jim Ackland remembering the secret greeter and the pins. Howard Backer gave a sad five bucks for his sister-in-law passing of cancer. Howard will be going back to Florida for the services.

LCF Mayor Pro-Tem Anthony Portantino again told us "Life is Good!"

50/50: Bob Wallace reminded Jim Ackland about the 50/50--just so he got a perfect score. Proceeds through today are $308.00 to the winner. Dave Hemstreet picked Hal Crockett's ticket. Hal picked a white ball so the pot keeps on growing.

Announcements: Karl Johnson reminded us to keep brining cartridges, eyeglasses and pulltabs. He turned over a check for $93 for cartridges. Bachy Bachmayer told us about the expansion program of Children's Hospital--help out by putting something in the little tub on the table. Hal Crockett told us about the Guatemala fund: We were appointed godparents of Francisco, a boarding student in Eastern Guatemala studying community development. Jim Ackland suggested we write Francisco a letter.

Howard Backer gave us a review of the 50/50 rules. We started with 20 or so and every time someone picks a white ball it is taken out of play. By next week we should have about $330.00.

Errata: last bulletin replace "Don Crockett" with "Don Corbett" and "Hal Thomas" with "Hal Crockett". Early Alzheimer's or something. Don says this writer "got close" but I'm not so sure.

Soap Box Derby: The 5th annual Greater Los Angeles Soap Box Derby sponsored by our club will be on Saturday, May 29th this year. This is a service project that had 58 racers last year and we expect at least that amount this year. This project is great one to help with. It does take a Saturday, but is usually rewarding in seeing the excited kids during the race. Committee chairmen will be asking for help. This is a great activity to support.
