The La Kawañian

March 24, 2004
Barry Riedel, Editor

Opening: No Martha or Shirley but rather Mary Gant’s little boom box gave us some piano music. Daryal Gant brought the meeting to order and we gave a big hand to Mary Gant. Jack Dawson led us in the verse and chorus of "God Bless America". George Lutes led the flag salute. Chuck Gulick gave a pre-Easter invocation.

Daryal Gant informed us that Jim Ackland collapsed on the golf course but is recovering and should be home soon from the hospital.

Guests: Sue Leabo--though not a guest--was welcomed. Anthony Portantino pointed out that the City beats the school district in attendance. Doris Horwith introduced Frank Ragazzi for his third time and he is interested in joining. He has already put in his application.

Daryal led us in a rousing and very refined "Hi Neighbor"

Secret Greeter: Clyde Hemphill acted as sergeant-at-arms. Al Restivo stood up to reveal he was the secret greeter.

Birthdays: Doris Horwith's birthday was on the 21st. She told us about the "very nice" party at Mario's Restaurant in Pasadena. She was modeling her birthday sweater--not birthday suit. She just turned 29 and donated appropriately.

Jack Dawson will be out of town next month for both his birthday and his anniversary. He told a story about the first time he ever slept with a 59-year-old woman.

Happy/Sad Bucks: Frank Ragazzi gave for being here and being a member and so is his wife, Rosemary who provided the brownies today. Rosemary is also putting in her application. Barry Riedel gave a couple of bucks for everyone who helped out on the recent Travel Adventures: Clyde, Bill, Melinda, Howard and Ed. Mary Gant gave the slew of people who came to visit last week. George Lutes gave for the good turn-out on Total K Day. Howard Backer gave for Clyde Hemphill who got the Distinguished Service Award at the recent Governor's Lunch. Bill Watts gave for his daughter completing her teaching credential and her master's degree. Patsy Christianson thought the Governor's Lunch was nice but she gave a sad buck for sitting next to Jack Dawson! "What a nut!" said Patsy. Paul Westmoreland gave a happy buck for Monday night JPL celebration for the 40th anniversary of the deep space network and a sad buck that Bill Pickering was not there. Paul was the speaker at the meeting! Doris Horwith gave for her grandson playing golf at LCHS who is in the headlines. And a sad buck for her anniversary which would have been the day after her birthday. Al Restivo gave a happy dollar for the meat loaf. Joel Smith was unsure as to whether it was a happy or sad buck for his son and new wife and son who are moving in with them in August. Joel is not quite sure when they are leaving. Daryal Gant gave for Shirley DeGrey who got knocked down at the park.

Frosty's Challenge: The challengers went first: George Lutes--who is becoming a regular on the show--told one about his cat who brought home a rabbit in bad condition--turned out that it was the neighbors' pet rabbit. The neighbor cleaned up the rabbit and put it back in the cage so that it looked like it expired naturally--only to discover it was another rabbit! Bill Watts set forth one about a convict escaping "Free!". Bill Bodell told the "airplane" joke about the shortage of parachutes. Was it Albert Einstein? Or Jimmy Carter? Frosty Boyd followed up with a joke about a senior lady at the zoo and Australians. Bill Watts won!

Announcements: With a certificate, Clyde Hemphill thanked Bachy Bachmayer, Howard Backer, Mel Wilson, Bob Wallace, George Lutes, Ken Lowe, Chuck Gulick as well as Ed Moulton and Jim Ackland for supporting Total K Day.

Diane DellaValle reminded us about "Dining for Youth" April 1. Linda Taix is donating a Boot Camp for the silent auction. Bachy Bachmayer nudged us about the Children's Hospital tubs.

Karl Johnson gave a quick up-date on the Builder's Club. They came up with 2 projects and 2 fundraisers. Next month will be a bake sale, the month after, a car wash. They will go to sing to a senior in the community and play games with them. Also: bring your cartridges, eyeglasses.

Joel Smith needs volunteers to round up all the truck drivers for the day of the event.

50/50: Our guest speaker drew Howard Backer's number. Howard drew a white ball so the 50/50 is over $200.

Joe Thompson, Lt. Governor of Division 3 invites us all to "Board The Bus" to Laughlin, Nevada, June 4, 5 and 6. Accommodations at the Flamingo Laughlin Hotel--2 nights, 2 persons, 2 beds per room. $100. Included is round trip bus fare, hotel and tax for 2 nights, two breakfast buffets, baggage handling and gratuity for driver. Deposit $10 per person by May 1 to McVicker Travel 818 790 8105.

Program: Elizabeth Georgeon introduced Alan Diaz of Angel Flight--which arranges free air transportation throughout the western states in response to medical and other compelling human needs.

Closing: Jack Dawson led us "Come On Kiwanis!"

Soap Box Derby: The 5th annual Greater Los Angeles Soap Box Derby sponsored by our club will be on Saturday, May 29th this year. This is a service project that had 58 racers last year and we expect at least that amount this year. This project is great one to help with. It does take a Saturday, but is usually rewarding in seeing the excited kids during the race. Committee chairmen will be asking for help. This is a great activity to support.
