The La Kawañian

March 10, 2004
Barry Riedel, Editor

Opening: The lovely Shirley DeGrey entertained us mightily with her piano stylings and got a big hand for her work. President Jim Ackland brought the meeting to order. Ed Moulton led us in "America". Glen Pettit led the pledge. George Lutes gave the invocation with some words of Mother Teresa on kindness.

We all welcomed Matt Regan! Sookie Matthews, it seems, had a birthday on the 18th and got a piece of candy from Jim Ackland. Chuck Gulick has an anniversary coming up on the 23rd. Chuck tried to keep his hands in his pockets but eventually spoke up to say it was his 21st and gave some for each year.

Frosty's Challenge: Frosty Boyd told one about a little old lady with a problem for which she saw a young physician. Howard Backer told one about husbands and wives. George Lutes joined the fray with one about an atheist fishing with the Loch Ness monster. Jack Dawson chimed in with one about a nerd engineer flying a kite. Mary Gant made Jack pay for that one. Jack Dawson won.

Happy/Sad Bucks: Mary Gant was sergeant-at-arms. Paul Westmoreland told us about the three-week cruise off the coast of Asia, visiting Japan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Viet-Nam. Clyde Hemphill gave for Mary Gant keeping the president honest. Bill Bodell gave a couple--one happy, one sad--because his election is over. Daryal Gant had a couple for their daughter Brenda visiting for several weeks. Sookie Matthews announced she is going to be 25 next week so she doubled that for a donation. Ed Moulton gave for a happy birthday for his on the 20th, Total K Day. He will be as old as there are keys on the piano. Also Ed squealed on one member who flew to Las Vegas and got married: Who? Our newest groom, Carl Gieseke got married to Pearl without divulging his secret to anyone (but Ed) about his bride from the Philippines. Ed Moulton gave an impromptu solo for Carl. Elizabeth Georgeon gave for the model trains at Descanso but her grandson will be up in Santa Cruz. Matt Regan coughed up a few for catching the guy by Cal Tech who was burning SUVs. Sheila Cook contributed a business buck for Citizen's Business Bank offering a home equity line of credit for 3.25% for first year and then prime. See Sheila Cook or Silvia Kirkorian. Carl Gieseke told us that his wife has been a member of the Manila Kiwanis.

Announcements: Paul Westmoreland informed us about the update for the directory that is now available at the back of the room. Pick one up. Diane DellaValle reminded us about the Dining for Youth dinner on April 1. Don't miss this fabulous event. 6PM at Brookside. $80 per person. If you know anyone who can donate for the silent auction let Diane or Mary Gant know. Ed Moulton is helping on the programs: next week is Morgan Browning of the San Francisco Renegades, a drum-and-bugle corps, with a videotape. Following 24th: Flights of Life, a volunteer pilot program who fly people to hospitals. On the 31st is the  mayor of LCF, Steve Del Guercio. If you have any ideas for programs, give Ed a call. Clyde Hemphill had a couple: Total K Day on March 20. Sign up! 8:30 AM Glenhaven Park. Soap Box Derby: May 29, Saturday, Memorial Day Weekend. It is a service event for Kiwanis. It is a labor-intensive effort so this is an excellent opportunity for service. Bachy Bachmayer nicely nudged us about the Children's Hospital, serving children for over 100 years. Matt Regan announced about the Vials of Life--Frosty has them. See Matt or Frosty if you would like one. Bob Martin told us about the director of the Peruvian program who will speak in July. A blurb on this worthwhile program will be placed in the newspapers. Barry Riedel reminded us that March 20 is a triple-header event for Kiwanis: Total K Day, Ed Moulton's birthday and Travel Adventures that night.

Bill Watts elaborated that the Vials of Life are available at the Sheriff's station, at Diane DellaValle's store and at the Chamber of Commerce.

Jim Ackland gave us all a push in the right direction about the Governor's Visit: we have twelve people going but we need at least two tables. March 21, 12-2PM. Unfortunately Ed Moulton has to miss because he's going on a cruise to Mexico but then someone’s got to do it.

Jim Ackland talked to us about the Soap Box Derby being a form of community outreach--especially with the training for the kids.

Also: this coming Sunday is Founder's Day in Montrose. We will have a booth there. It's a celebration about the founding of the Montrose area. John Torre has a lot of pictures of the original area. Come on by! We will have a booth open between 9 and 2PM. Something like 10,000 people stroll up and down Honolulu Avenue. Maybe we can get some interested persons.

Heads-Up: We are going to have our first meeting with the AM club after the Interclub at Flintridge Prep, with a meeting at Cheryl Carbonetti.

Mary Gant encouraged us to contribute to the silent auction at the Dining for Youth dinner. If you can generously give any tickets or products, kindly let Mary know. If you go to one of our sponsors, let them know we appreciate them.

Program: Jim Ackland told us that the program for today was . . . . . was . . . . about a cruise around the Tahitian Islands by Sheila Cook. (Tom Gilfoy is in South Carolina and he was kind enough to get the program for today but the speaker was fairly well invisible.)

Closing: Ed Moulton led us all in “Hail Kiwanis”.

Soap Box Derby: The 5th annual Greater Los Angeles Soap Box Derby sponsored by our club will be on Saturday, May 29th this year. This is a service project that had 58 racers last year and we expect at least that amount this year. This project is great one to help with. It does take a Saturday, but is usually rewarding in seeing the excited kids during the race. Committee chairmen will be asking for help. This is a great activity to support.
