The La Kawañian

February 25, 2004
Barry Riedel, Editor

Opening:  We were entertained with the piano stylings of Shirley DeGrey, who got a big hand from us all as thanks.  President Jim Ackland brought the meeting to order.  Ed Moulton led us in "America".  Patsy Christianson led the pledge.  Howard Backer gave a nice poem "The World Is Mine" as invocation.

Early News:  Dick DeGrey announced that Shirley DeGrey has become a Kiwanian!  Hal Thomas told us about wife Julia Thomas' recent close brush with infirmity.  Julia's heart needed an “electrician” to fix the wiring in her heart.  She is as good as new.

Guests:  Tom Gilfoy introduced Don Mazen, world-famous author, who was happy to be with us and reminded us about his book, "History of La Cañada".  Elizabeth Georgeon introduced Jim Owens, her neighbor and an engineer, who is active in city affairs.  Hal Crockett introduced Martha Crockett.  We all sang "Hi Neighbor" under Ed Moulton's able leadership.  Then we remembered Harriet Hammons who was belatedly given a hand.  Then we all sang "Smile And The World Smiles With You" twice!

Announcements:  In the last Valley Sun there was an editorial about the K Kids going with the Builder's Club and planting some flowers.  They also collect ink cartridges, eyeglasses, celphones and pull tabs.  Some money goes for the kids' outings and some goes to the Ronald McDonald House.

Bill Watts was given a round of applause for all his efforts in putting our the publicity for the club.  Look for the Vial of Life program in this week's paper.

Tonight the PTA is having a function at LCHS at which several of our people will be honored as having been outstanding people in our community for children.  Ed Moulton and Karl Johnson will be there.

Meeting with AM Club:  We had a meeting last week in search of a service project with the AM club.  Please see Jim Ackland in order to be on the final committee for the project.

Happy/Sad Bucks:  George Lutes was sergeant-at-arms.  Mike Leininger gave for having 11 National Merit finalists this year and construction is winding up for the 7/8 Science rooms.  Also he is a proud grandpa!  He gave a happy and a sad buck for USC.

Sue Leabo gave us an update on the up-coming Measures B and P bond measures to modernize most of the high school.  The district is faced with major reductions in the budget if the parcel tax does not pass.

Harriet Hammons gave for her granddaughter who turned one and they had a wonderful celebration.  She gave a sad buck for this being her last meeting for a while.  She also gave for her son's dumping in the LA River.  Fortunately he is OK.  Karl Johnson gave a sad buck for not being here for the next couple of weeks and a happy buck for being in the Caribbean.  Patsy Christianson gave for a birthday (we won't say how many) and she got a surprise party with a belly dancer!

Bill Watts donated some for clarifying that he was not the William Watts who recently wrote an article in the Valley Sun.  It's not our Bill.

Mary Gant gave a happy buck for the Mid-Year South Conference last Saturday.  Bob Wallace gave for not embarrassing his daughter at a wedding he attended last Saturday.  While Bob had the microphone he reminded us about the "Dining for Youth" on April 1.

Clyde Hemphill shed a few for the Soap Box Derby ad having an error on it.

Frosty's Challenge.  Although Frosty Boyd was absent, Howard Backer took up the challenge with one about the Indians and a dead horse.  George Lutes challenged with one about a general and admiral.  Bill Watts dug one out of his memory about the denomination of stamps.   Patsy Christianson followed up and remembered the punch line for one about a tender bar (bartender).  Thunderous applause was heard for all the contestants but George Lutes won!

Announcements:  Ed Moulton told us that the Hollywood Club is having a membership drive.  If you have any contacts with those in Hollywood, let Ed know.  Pat Anderson gave a quick note from the Chamber about the new Chamber business directory.  If you have not received one, let Pat know.  Also note p.11 about Fiesta Days: there is a picture of our Soap Box Derby.  Also Pat has the new community maps.

Clyde Hemphill told us about Total K day March 20.  Total K is the day when all Kiwanis does a service project within the community.  This year we are going to work on Glenhaven Park.  But we'll need help:  8:30-Noon March 20.

Mary Gant let us know that a bestseller book "The Da Vinci Code"  Tomorrow from 7-8:15 at the Presbyterian Church a speaker will separate out fact from fiction.  Silvia Kirkorian is passing around the March invocation sign-up sheet.  Also:  Next week Carmen Applegreen of the Braille Institute will speak.  Bachy Bachmayer reminded us to put something in the pots for the Children's Miracle Network.

Karl Johnson reminded us about bringing pull-tabs, eyeglasses and ink cartridges.  Remind your neighbor.

50/50:  Patsy Christianson (who won yesterday at the La Crescenta club) won!  She drew a white ball so the pot continues.

Karl Johnson demonstrated to everyone that there really exists an orange ball in that bag.

Program:  Ed Moulton introduced Ed Bryant who is the founder and director of the Pasadena Youth Center.

Closing:  Ed Moulton led us in “Come On Kiwanis!”
