OPENING :
The seat at the piano was strangely empty. President Jim
Ackland brought the meeting to order. Jim Ackland reminded us
we should thank either Shirley DeGrey or Martha Crockett
for piano playing—but no. Jack Dawson led us in "God
Bless America". Irving Berlin immigrated from Russia and
became famous with "Alexander's Rag Time Band".
"God Bless America" was his gift to America--he never
accepted any royalties for it. Karl Johnson led us in the
flag salute. Jack Dawson (again) gave us a Scots
invocation.
GUESTS:
Jim Ackland pointed out that we were lucky to have so many
guests. Pat Anderson introduced Stephanie Levy, her
right-hand person at the Chamber of Commerce. Silvia Kirkorian
introduced Nicole Ryan with Citizen's Business Banks. Diane
DellaValle introduced what's-his-name--Jim Edwards! Chuck
"Two Buck Chuck" Gulick introduced the Pasadena
folk: Reed Allen, Lt. Gov. Craig Wallace, Harry Creisby and Patti
Woolman. Jan 2 is the interclub with Pasadena at the Pasadena
Hilton. The International President, Robert Moore, will be the
speaker. Ray Bartlett, Past Pres of Pasadena, was introduced along
with Pasadena members Karen Drew and Peggy Riger and Mel Matthews
and Betty Ford and Patti Woolman and Dick Thomas and Past Lt Gov
Mel Smith. Ken Lowe introduced the Key Club: President
Maressa Takahashi, Shereen Aclan and Christine Doii. Karl
Johnson introduced Don Mazen our own historian. Jack Dawson
led us in "Consider Yourself". Pete "How
Much Is It Going to Cost Me" Palermo was presented by Jim
Edwards. Pete gave a happy buck and a sad buck--happy
to be here today and sad because all the Pasadena guys forgot Dave
from Pete's office.
Jim Ackland
passed the microphone to Paul Westmoreland who announced
the results of the Membership Contest. The winning League
President of the Mountain League was Jim Ackland who got a
nice certificate and a pass for two free lunches from the Club.
The "A" team won--Captain Jim Edwards got the
prize who got another nice certificate and a coupon for two free
lunches. Ed Moulton--no surprise--won as the person who
brought in the most members.
BIRTHDAYS :
Clyde Hemphill had a check in the mail for his birthday--he
joined the century club. Bill Watts was effusive so long as
we did not sing "Happy Birthday" to him which we did.
Jim Reynolds recapped his big birthday. He did not want to
tell anyone how old he was but he sang "76 Trombones".
HAPPY/SAD BUCKS :
Howard Backer gave a happy buck for having his family
together over the holiday--dinner for 25! Guest Stephanie Levy
gave one for a Thank-you and glad that her parents and she are
spending the holiday together. Jim Edwards gave a sad buck
for USC with a strangely designed Leggo structure. Pasadenian Reed
Allen gave two: one for the Club Float work and second for Pete
Palermo whose partner's daughter is Rose Queen. Howard
Backer had a response for Jim Edwards (since he went to
U. of Missouri) because USC is going to play Oklahoma. Glenn
Pettit gave some big ones out of sheer gratitude for being
here. Clyde Hemphill gave one for the big crew who showed
up to put up the Christmas tree lights in a Santa Ana wind.
FROSTY'S CHALLENGE :
Frosty Boyd first gave a happy buck for the occupational
therapy (Leggos) provided on the tables by the speaker. He told a
Thanksgiving joke—at least we think it might have been a joke. Pat
Anderson took up the gauntlet and told a lemon joke. Bob
Wallace told the one about a teacher teaching about Jonah and
the Whale (Pat Anderson says the Good Book says it was a
“big fish”). Reed Allen remarked that we have a wonderful Lt.
Gov Craig Wallace--no joke. One of the Pasadena folk--Mel
Smith--tried to hit the mark with a battery joke. Somehow "batteryaid"
Mel Smith won--from Pasadena.
50/50 DRAWING .
Howard Backer won!
