OPENINGMartha Crockett tickled the ivories to entertain us while we meeted and greeted and enjoyed lunch. President Jim Ackland brought the meeting to order. A big round of applause was given to Martha Crockett. Ed Moulton led us in a rousing rendition of "This Is My Country". George Lutes led the pledge of allegiance. Howard Backer gave us a humorous intro to the invocation from material garnered from the internet with a little added prayer for the "fiscal year"!

Announcements: Jim Ackland gave us the news that we got a letter from the District Governor wishing us Happy Anniversary for our 55th (actually the 53rd). News from the District Meeting: we have the opportunity to become a Distinguished Kiwanian. We have to sponsor a new member, participate in a club project, attend three interclubs or have 6 months of perfect attendance, attend a District Meeting, attend a District dinner and attend a sponsored youth event. We have many members who could qualify for this Award. December 27th will be Feed the Floaters for the District float. Monday night the 29th will be the Feed the Floaters for the LCF float. Also: the District is looking for us to sponsor another sponsored youth program--so think about that.

Daryal Gant brought us up to date on the interclubs. If we have 100% we will have fulfilled one criterion in order to be an outstanding club. 25 of our members have already attended. For those who have not yet attended, sign up on the yellow sheet on each table. Upcoming: There is the Hollywood club, the Key Club and the Highland Park club. (See below.)

Bachy Bachmayer reminded us of the Children's Hospital contributions. Frosty Boyd updated the Vial of Life program. All Key Clubs are involved. Barry Riedel told us about the Travel Adventure program this Saturday 7PM at Flintridge Prep. Ed Moulton told us about the Builder's Club.

Pat Anderson informed that Thursday November 20 is the November Mixer at the Roger Barkley Community Center. It will benefit the “10th Annual Run for the Hungry”. Tomorrow, Thursday November 20 at 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM at the Barkley Center.

On Thursday December 4th 4:00-6PM Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus will arrive in an antique fire truck to kick off the community event at Memorial Park. Watch Santa throw the light switch that lights up La Cañada Flintridge to ring in the holiday season. Bring an unwrapped toy and support the CV Sheriff’s Station annual toy drive. Witness the introduction of Miss La Cañada Flintridge finalists and the announcement of Miss LCF Court. Thursday December 4 from 4-6PM at Memorial Park.

Joe Thompson thanked us all for attending the Interclub this AM. Paul Bobzin and Rick Lazare were greeted. Hal Crockett introduced his lovely wife Martha. Dick De Grey introduced the equally lovely and gracious Shirley DeGrey. Hal Thomas introduced his spouse Julia Thomas who is a member of the AM club. Bill Scherkey was congratulated for having won an IRS case in the morning. New member Mike Leininger acted as sergeant-at-arms. Dave Spence was unclear on exactly how many years he has been married (1959) but he contributed generously.

Happy/Sad Bucks: Paul Westmoreland gave a sad buck for Dinuba with financial problems. Clyde Hemphill was happy to be back from Hawaii where he had a fabulous time. He was ready to get President Jim Ackland organized. Karl Johnson had a happy buck (for going to school with his 2-year-old on Thursday) and a sad buck for not being able to go to the board meetings on Thursday. Jim Reynolds celebrated a big birthday and put an equivalent amount in the pot. Jack Dawson gave a happy buck for Pat Anderson organizing a great Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings.

Frosty's Challenge: Frosty Boyd let us have it with a politician joke. Challengers were Bill Watts with a fireman joke and Chuck Gulick with a horse joke. Bill Watts won by acclamation.

Sheila Cook woke us up a little with the reminder that we had forgot to sing Happy Birthday to Jim Reynolds. So we did! We made it up to him by singing him the Birthday song right away. Happy Birthday Jim!

Program: Sheila Cook introduced Larry Hall from the Crescenta-Canada YMCA. He brought us up to speed on the doings of the YMCA.

Closing: Ed Moulton led us in a "Hail Kiwanis" to end the meeting

.Quiz: What does “ghoughphtheightteeau” spell? Here are the rules: “gh” is “i” like the last letters of “”hiccough”. “ough” = “o” as in “dough”. “phth” = “t” as in phthisis” (pulmonary tuberculosis) (this is from an old book). “eigh” stands for “a” as in “neighbor”. “tte” stands for “t” as in “gazette”. “eau” stands for “o” as in “beau”. Thus you have:

ghoughphtheightteeau

p o t a t o
