The La Kawañian

November 5, 2003
Barry Riedel, Editor

Opening:  Martha Crockett kept us entertained with some pleasant piano music "It Was Just One Of Those Things (Just One Of Those Crazy Flings)". A big hand for Martha! Ed Moulton led us in a rendition of "You're A Grand Old Flag". Ken Lowe (who needs no microphone) led us in the flag salute. For an invocation Bachy Bachmayer read us some fine words from Thomas A-Kempis a medieval scholar whose words still ring today.

Mike Leininger informed us that one of LCHS' students from the class of '98--Todd Bryant--was killed in action in Iraq. Todd Bryant graduated with honors and received a commission at the senior awards night for West Point. He graduated from West Point and was commanding a humvee when he was killed. Both parents work at JPL and his sister also graduated from West Point. We are all saddened by his death.

Jim Ackland wished Ken Lowe well in his activities with the Key Club at LCHS. As part of a program where the chairman of the committes explain to the club their committee activities. Ken Lowe stepped forward and told us all about his committee. The Club sponsors the LCHS Key Club in order to foster the spirit of community service and give leadership training to qualified individuals. We have done a great job--working for 33 years with the Key Club. Members of the club are on the Student Council. We sponsor their trip to the convention. Last year we won first place in major categories. This next year we are going to Sacramento for the convention. We also offer scholarships to the officers. During the summer we send two people to the International. They do a lot of community activities including the Fall Rally at Magic Mountain, UNICEF and Central Park Thanksgiving Meal. We are doing a joint project with the Key Club this Friday 5-7PM at Carl Christiansen's house sorting Christmas lights. Come on by! If you think of any other projects that could be joint projects, let Ken Lowe know.

THINGS ON THE TABLE: On the tables was a packet titled "New Member Orientation". Some of the many things we do are listed in the packet. Take one home--give one to a possible new member.

Jim Ackland picked on the table nearest the door--threatening "serious talks" if the same people sit there. Carl Gieseke was next with a small lesson on pronouncing his last name. (It's German.) Glenn Pettit got to tell us where he has been--Kentucky, Santa Clara--and he missed a birthday. Bob Martin got up and told us what he has been doing with regard to Okinawa. Mel Wilson told us about his trip--They went on the ship Ectasy for about 4 days, then flew to New Jersy and spent a week there, then to Carolina, then back to California to smell the smoke.

GUESTS: Mel Wilson grabbed the bucket and went around--first to Dick DeGrey to introduce Shirley DeGrey and Hal Crockett to introduce Martha Crockett. Last week the Crocketts went to Seattle to visit their oldest daughter and the parks and zoos. Ed Moulton led us in "Hi Neighbor!"

HAPPY/SAD BUCKS, CONFESSIONS, ET CETERA: In honor of his 63rd anniversary Ed Moulton joined the Century Club. Jim Reynolds spoke of the many hours working on the year-end report and in the Bulletin Jim Edwards got the credit! (Sorry! See "Erratum".) Mel Wilson has a birthday coming up and made a suitable donation. Glenn Pettit made a donation for his birthday. Bob Martin gave 1,095 yen. Jim Edwards gave a happy buck for Barry giving him credit for the year-end report and some for USC. Daryal Gant gave a couple--one for Clyde Hemphill for producing the New Member Orientation Sheet--and one for Saturday night TofR Wine Tasting where Daryal got to escort one of the Rose Princesses. Jack Dawson gave one for a great trip in October--to Zion and Las Vegas. Lloyd Welch gave one for the Halloween Party with the kids. Pat Anderson was happy for a very successful Farmer's Market on Saturday. 3 ears of corn for a buck!

FROSTY'S CHALLENGE: Frosty Boyd told a joke--no really. Elizabeth Georgeon and Howard Backer challenged. Howard told one from the internet and Elizabeth after giving thanks for Frosty's weekly joke told a puppy joke. Elizabeth Georgeon got the candy bar.

MORE THINGS ON THE TABLE: On the tables was a sheet with the committee chairs and assignments. Any question? See Jim Ackland.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Daryal Gant talked about the "yellow zits" on our badges. He passed around a sign-up sheet for interclub events so we can get rid of those unsightly spots. Pat Anderson announced the opening of the competition for Miss La Cañada Flintridge. Do you know any candidates? Let Pat know. Crowning will be in January. Remember the November 20 Mixer: Roger Barkley Center. Diane DellaValle announced the Christmas Party at Jack and Barbara Dawson's house--December 14, 5:00PM-8:00PM. Howard Backer told us the financial statements are on the back table and the minutes from the last board meeting. Hal Crockett for the International Relations Committee announced the November 22 dinner in Long Beach with a silent auction of many fine things. Also: The American Friends Service Committee 11/15 Arts & Crafts Fair in LCF. Bachy Bachmayer reminded us about the Children's Hospital tubs.

YET MORE THINGS ON THE TABLE: Ed Moulton announced the results of the questionnaire about how to improve the music. Not enough people answered. Fill 'em out!

OPPORTUNITY DRAWING: Sheila Cook gave the bucket to Jim Wallace, our speaker, to draw the winning number. Bob Wallace won! Any relation? None.

PROGRAM: Sheila Cook introduced our speaker, Jim Wallace, who spoke on the Habitat for Humanity project.

ERRATUM: Last week the Editor of this fine Bulletin--who (almost) never, never makes mistakes--gave Jim Edwards got the credit for doing the year-end report. It should have been Jim Reynolds! Sorry!

CLOSING: Ed Moulton led us all in a happy song, "Come on Kiwanis".

Holiday Christmas Party--December 14 5PM-8PM at Jack and Barbara Dawson's house!
