The La Kawañian

October 22, 2003
Barry Riedel, Editor

OPENING: Shirley DeGrey gave us the pleasure of hearing some favorite songs on the piano. President Jim Ackland brought the meeting to order with a ding! of the bell. Dr. Frosty Boyd led us in a stirring rendition of "God Bless America" and Bea Cirar led us in the flag salute. Don Davidson gave a nice invocation.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: The hand-held mike was not working. President Jim asked Paul Westmoreland, Jeb Long and Clyde Hemphill to be thinking about it Thinking about what? We were to find out when they made the announcements.

Jeb Long announced that we are now sending out the bulletin and roster by e-mail. Anybody have any problems? Doris Horwith asked about bringing up the pictures for the bulletin. Doris is getting flashbacks from the past--from 2001 and old parties. You should be able to click on the web link. Bill Watts had no questions--only answers. Everybody gets their e-mail OK? Does everybody know why we are doing this? Because we can no longer take our bulk mail to LCF so otherwise we have to send everything by first-class mail which is quite a bit more.

Paul Westmoreland asked people to take a look over the membership conference. Jim Ackland's Mountain league has developed a substantial lead. He asked us to look over the info regarding the e-scrip. The Von's Club has to be renewed by 11/1. Clyde Hemphill was really Daryal Gant reporting on interclubs. Some of us have already stripped the yellow dot from our badges because they went to an interclub. Then Clyde talked a bit about the new member orientation package. The package has been updated and will be distributed to every member. (Clyde will be gone for three weeks in Hawaii. Somebody's got to do it.) Bachy Bachmayer reminded us to donate to the Children's Hospital containers. Paul Westmoreland was going to award the permanent badge to Lloyd Welch but Lloyd stepped outside for a phone call.

GUESTS: Pres. Jim Ackland mentioned something about the left foot and the right foot. Ken Lowe introduced Sheern Aclan, project chairman for Key Club and Jean Benjauthrit, Community Relations for the club. Pat Anderson introduced Cheryl Ann Riley, a retired attorney and perhaps soon-to-be member. Bill Scherkey introduced his grandson Sam and his daughter Nicole Scherkey from Minneapolis. Hal Thomas introduced his bride Julia who is in the other (AM) club. Dick DeGrey introduced Shirley DeGrey. Bill Watts intro'd Nina Suh with Diversified Escrow. Dr. Frosty led us in a troubled version of "Consider Yourself". Jim Ackland pined for Hi Neighbor.

FINES, CONFESSIONS, HAPPY & SAD BUCKS: Paul Westmoreland had a buck for Dinuba (5 Miles From Reedley). It seemed that our President recently discovered Dinuba--where he spent an hour or so (going around the town at least twice in that time it was rumored). Pat Anderson had a happy one for Jim Reynolds who won one of the cherished prizes at the recent mixer. Jim Ackland understood that Jim Reynolds was happy to be a Kiwanian. How happy? Jim gave some bucks. Tom Gilfoy told us about his last Saturday activities--he went back to South Bend. He noted how friendly the Notre Dame people are to an 'SC fan. Mark Alexander gave some happy bucks for USC. Jim Ackland asked the SC fans to stand up and sing "On Trojans" but there were no takers. Frosty gave a buck for one of his famous stories about those "two drops of water". Jim Ackland asked if there were any responses to that Joke Challenge. Elizabeth Georgeon responded with a coffee joke. Any more? Alan Perry Sr. took up the gauntlet. The test of applause was applied to the contestants and it seems that Elizabeth won.

Bachy Bachmayer had something that will happen to him on the 27th--his birthday. We all sang "Happy Birthday" to Bachy. Bachy joined the Century Club for that! Don Davidson had an anniversary (October 6) that Jim Ackland thought was the 26th. Don gave a generous contribution. We struggled though a rendition of "Olde Lang Syne".

Telephone calls being completed, Paul Westmoreland presented Lloyd Welch with his permanent badge.

ANNOUNCEMENTS REDUX: Jim Ackland announced that at the District Meeting he found the District Newsletter. Our club was prominently featured on the front page for our Wine Tasting. Clyde Hemphill got a round of applause, standing in lieu for Mary Gant. Another handout--canary in color but not birdy in effect--was a sign-up sheet for one club committee and one Foundation committee.

On November 1 the Phil-Am club is having from 6PM-12AM their Masquerade Ball at the Country Club. Please consider it. Jim Ackland has tickets. The Kiwanis Club of Eagle Rock has invited us to an anniversary party on Pearl Harbor Day, December 7. To be held in the Century Club of Eagle Rock.
