The
La Kawañian
October
15, 2003
Barry Riedel, Editor
OPENING:
Martha Crockett tickled
the ivories to our delight including "It Was Just One Of
Those Things", "The Hills Are Alive (With The Sound of
Music, not poison ivy). President Jim Ackland brought
the meeting to order beginning with a "big hand" for Martha
Crockett and "America the Beautiful" which we got
started on the second try. Dr. Frosty Boyd gave a
nice intro to the flag salute and Howard Backer gave a warm
and fuzzy invocation ending with--as all God's children
say--"Amen".
President Jim told us about the club assessment. Daryal
Gant took the podium to inform us further: We were all
sent a Club Assessment form and maybe we all returned them--maybe
about half. Jim Ackland made a summary of the results.
Daryal took the data and together with some very smart and mature
Kiwanians--Bill Scherkey and Pat Anderson--reviewed all the info.
Four recommendations came out of that study: (See attached
"Goals, Objectives, Actions") Our venue and
general nature of meetings were good; we liked out bulletins; we
liked being members; we thought the dues and costs were
reasonable; we thought the club had high community visibility.
What needed substantial improvement: Performing a regular
community analysis; involving new members immediately in a
project; having joint projects with other organizations and
developing and implementing a PR program. What else?
Three things: increasing the number of members; to include youth
and minorities; educate new members better. Some poor
attendance by club members was noted. Some members were
stale--even moldy. The committee recommended four items (see
attached "Big Four" below).
GUESTS: Pat Anderson
intro'd two Chamber workers, Stephanie Levy and Wendy Gayner.
Two who looked young enough to be Key Cubbers (but were not): Vic
Legerton introduced Judy Chung with Diversified Title and Nina Suh.
Ron Borucki, George Humphries and Stephanie Caferu of Glendale
Kiwanis. Pat Liddell. Ken Lowe introduced Key
Clubbers: Ashley Anderson and Liara Rios.
Dick DeGrey
introduced his lovely wife Shirley. Hal Crockett did the
honors for Martha. Sue Leabo introduced Mike Leininger
of
LCHS--a prospective member. Jim Ackland introduced the
Lt-Gov-in-Waiting, Nilo Pineda. Bill Bodell introduced
himself and Nita Pearson of the Crescenta club. Fellow NJ
stater Pat Liddell was introduced (again) by Clyde Hemphill.
FINES, CONFESSIONS, ETC.:.
Silvia Kirkorian acted as Sgt of Arms. Secret Greeter:
Silvia Kirkorian. Ed Mouton brought us a version of "Hi
Neighbor" right in the middle. The Pres forgot.
Fines for the President were suggested. Daryal Gant told a
story about lunch seating. Howard Backer gave three Happy
Bucks for the three Chamber persons who helped out with the Wine
Tasting--including Pat Anderson. Pat Liddell gave a happy
buck. Barry Riedel gave some bucks for his birthday.
Mary Gant gave a Happy Buck. Stephanie Cafero gave one.
Tom Gilfoy gave something (a Century Club!) for an anniversary and
for a trip to South Bend to see the USC-Notre Dame game. Hal
Crockett gave a cozy happy buck because they are heading for
Mammoth with their younger daughter, their grandson and a big dog!
Sheila Cook gave a happy buck for returning from Vancouver,
Canada. George Humphries of the Other Club gave a happy buck
for living in LCF for forty years. Jim Ackland gave a happy
buck for the Assessment Committee and for meeting Howard's
granddaughters. Finally Frosty put in one for the last
Saturday for Stanford-USC and a little Democrat joke. One
more: Dick DeGrey followed up for the two guys who came over
last week from out there and he took them in the back room and
showed how the amplifiers worked and they fixed it good so we can
hear now.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Pat
Anderson reminded us that tomorrow night is the greatest mixer
of the year, right here in Descanso, a joint Tournament of Roses/
Chamber of Commerce Mixer. 5:30-8PM, Thursday, October 16.
Howard Backer reminded us about the e-script program.
Howard informed us that invoices are going to be sent by
e-mail in the future. He will e-mail us to remind us about
the e-mail (what?). Daryal Gant is in charge of
Interclubbing. Clyde Hemphill will act in his place
and stead next week at the AM club a week from today. Get
those yellow spots off! October 22. AM Club. Bachy
Bachmayer reminded us about those li'l ol' containers on the
table. Nilo Pineda announced the Mascarade Ball
for the Foundation. November 1. Live Music.

achieve success. He escaped from Lebanon came to the US with
$17 in his pocket.
