OPENING:  President Jim Ackland opened his second meeting after being installed on September 24. We were more polite this week and didn't walk out on him. He suggested we go to the buffet line, but the food was not there yet. We enjoyed Shirley DeGrey's piano renditions while we waited. After lunch, Jim thanked Shirley, asked Hal Crockett to give the invocation, and the flag salute was led by Carlos Cortez who would soon be installed. Ed Moulton led us in singing "California Here I Come", in reference to yesterday's recall election.

HEAD TABLE AND GUESTS included Hal Crockett, Jim Ackland, Jack Dawson, Al Perry Jr. and guest speaker, Dr. Marvin Nelson. Other guests at the luncheon were: Martha Crockett, Mike Leininger, LCHS principal, a guest of Sue Leabo; Dave Cardenas and Ed Sotelo, friends of Carlos Cortez; Julia Thomas with Hal; Key Club members from LCHS, Felicia Cheng and Lauren Beland; Joyce Flynn with Pat; and Cheryl Ann Riles, guest of Diane DellaValle. Don Mazen, author and a recent speaker also joined us.

NEW MEMBERS: Carlos Cortez of the Boy Scout Council of San Gabriel and Mark Alexander, our new city manager were sponsored by Ken Lowe and Anthony Portantino, respectively. Membership chairman,
Paul Westmoreland, handled the induction and handed out pins and other new member paraphernalia. Welcome! These are the first new members of Jim Ackland's term

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND BUCKS:  Daryal Gant is readying us for interclubs; Jim Reynolds awarded Dick DeGrey with a book on ceramics as a gift for all his efforts on behalf of the club over the years; Bob Wallace is leaving for a getaway trip to Africa tomorrow. Bob was warned to stay from the tigers. Carlos was Sgt. At Arms and collected a nice sum from the competing jokesters. Pat Anderson gave four happy bucks for our fashionable male models at the 'Men About Town' last Friday. They were Dick DeGrey, Jim Edwards, Jeff Hoffman, and Paul Toffel. Doris Horwith had a happy buck for the end of the recall campaign, Carl Gieseke was our secret greeter and Bea Cirar and Paul Westmoreland celebrated birthdays.
Carl Christensen won the raffle and will be selling them next week.

THE PROGRAM: Al Perry Jr. introduced his old schoolmate, Marv Nelson, from Loma Linda. Marv, a neighbor of Jack Dawson, gave us a talk and slide show about the latest MRIs and imaging procedures used at Children's Hospital where he is head of the Pediatric Radiology Dept. The new procedures can detect problems and pinpoint abnormalities in children that could not have been available previously. Brain and chest and other areas can now be seen in detail. That hospital is one of our ongoing support projects who will receive $1500 in contributions from our donations for the past year.

Dr Mervin Nelson of Children's Hospital

Closing: Ed Moulton led us in a non-animal-scaring rendition of Hail Kiwanis.  Hail!  Hail!  Hail!
