Martha

what happened?

Everybody walked out! As Martha played
marching music. Finally after a little shouting by President
Jim everyone walked back in again.

Kiwanians walking out on Pres
Ed
Moulton led us in 2 verses of "America the
Beautiful" Everybody had to look at the book to
remember the second stanza. Then somebody stole Jim's bell
and Bachy Bachmeyer returned it. New
member Carlos Cortez led pledge. Sheila Cook
gave a nice invocation asking for inner strength against outside
pressures. President Jim asked for 2 challenges to Frosty
Boyd's traditional joke.
President Jim Ackland announced a new award. Jim told
a story about putting up the yellow tape during the Wine Tasting
event. Clyde Hemphill wanted the yellow tape, Mari did not,
and Jim took off for the restroom. So it is a
"Yellow Tape Award" given to Clyde Hemphill and Mary
Gant. The awards were hand-crafted from paper plates and
yellow zone tape.
Bob Wallace introduced guest Dodi from La Cañada
Prep School, a guest of Diane DellaValle. Diane
herself introduced Cheryl Riles, a friend and attorney.
Anthony Portantino introduced Andy Beckwar. Ken
Lowe presented two freshmen key clubbers, Angel Sun Nichole
Chi. Clyde Hemphill gave us Susan Richards
and Susan Chamberlain, who were accompanying the speaker.
Bob Wallace gave a happy buck 'cuz he was sitting down in
the audience and not on the podium. Secretary Doris
Horwith gave a happy buck that she was through being secretary
but she had one more month to go. Karl Johnson got
presented his pin and had a happy buck for his vacation to an
island in the Caribbean. Clyde Hemphill tossed in a
happy buck for the ERT--the emergency response team--that saved
the Travelogue program. The ERT Consisted of Jeb Long, Ed

,
and Clyde. Tom Stafford gave a buck for the first
meeting at the Palmcrest School. Jack Dawson gave a
happy buck for having his arm twisted. Pat Anderson
gave a sad buck for her car failing the smog test and a happy buck
because of the Chamber's Men About Town on Friday--four Kiwanians
are among the models. Howard Backer gave $20 for Ed
Moulton for the Travel Adventure and Clyde Hemphill for
being a catalyst and for Mary Gant and Clyde Hemphill for
the Wine Tasting.
Daryal Gant gave a buck for telling Mary they couldn't go
to Africa but going to Arizona instead. Barry Riedel gave
two bucks for friends in need who are friends indeed.
Karen of the Wildlife Waystation gave a buck for being here.
Bill Watts was happy to announce our new bulletin editor Barry
Riedel and Bill's new job, Publicity. Ed Moulton gave
a $20 as a thanks to Clyde and Jeb Long for their
work on the ads in the Travel Adventure program. Ed also
gave a couple of sad bucks for not being able to sing "Hi
Neighbor". So we immediately launched into a rousing
chorus.
Diane DellaValle introduced Terry Villanueva from
La Cañada Prep who promised to join this week.
Dr. Frosty Boyd told a groaner and Daryal Gant took
up the challenge with a joke about Frosty--another groaner. Jack
Dawson took up the glove and told a horse story. A vote
was taken and even in its poor condition Frosty's joke won.
Craft Talk: Silvia
Kirkorian got up and gave her craft talk. She was born
in Sofia, Bulgaria. Silvia experienced major problems in
re-joining her family after they escaped from the country.
She graduated from UC Berkeley and just has got her MBA. She
joined Citizens Business Bank about 6 months ago. She does
needlepoint and does scrap booking her travel pictures.

Announcements: Barry
Riedel reminded us about the "Thailand" Travel
Adventure this Saturday night. Paul Westmoreland
announced that we can now either get the bulletin and roster by
e-mail or pay $25--same as the AM club--to get it by mail. Karl
Johnson urged us to bring our inkjet or laser cartridges or
eyeglasses and showed us the check for $72 and some cents. Daryal
Gant pointed out a lavender list on each table telling us
about the good companies that supported our Wine & Gourmet
Food Tasting event. Some cards were provided by Queen Flower
giving a 10% discount. Daryal also told us about the
interclub program for the coming year. Every member needs to
go to one interclub and we need to have an interclub with each
club in the division. Daryal will provide yellow dots for
the badges. Bachy Bachmeyer encouraged us to give to
the little buckets for Children's Hospital.
Program: Sheila Cook introduced
the first program of the year with Karen Suter, a local
resident and teacher, in charge of the Wildlife Way Station.
Karen was speech therapist at LCHS for many years, and is a docent
at Descanso. She entertained us with a PowerPoint
presentation about wildlife and the inception and growth of the
Wildlife Way Station that now houses over 600 animals. They
have rehabilitated over 4,000 animals to the wild. They have
a petting zoo. Their motto is that Wild Animals Do Not Make
Good Pets. They have a full-time hospital with 2 full-time
vets. For a grand finale, they brought out some live
animals: a California king snake, a gopher snake that just had
three babies, a desert tortoise and a chinchilla.
