OPENING: The Hall Was Alive with the sound of music as Shirley DeGrey serenaded us with her melodious piano music. Ed Moulton was more than alive as he bounced us through "This Is My Country".

HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: The "Head" was headed by Pres Bob who selected Joan Peters to give the Flag Salute and Frosty Boyd to lead us in prayer. Daryal Gant, our program chairman, and our speaker Don Mazen completed the table. Hal Thomas introduced his wife of 54 years, Julia; Ken Lowe introduced Carlos Cortez and was happy to say he wants to be a new member; Elizabeth Calciano Georgeon's guest (and a guest of the club) was Eric Olberz. All were greeted by "Hi Neighbor".

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Pres Bob reminded all of upcoming important dates: September 14 (wine tasting); September 15 (installation dinner of Lt Gov); September 24 (our clubs installation dinner); next was Don Corbett who further expounded on the Wine & Food Tasting event and next was Daryal Gant who, guess what, went on further to extort the virtues of the Wine & Food Event (ask your doctor, wine is good for you) and to buy your tickets from him or all kinds of places in town and bring a friend or 3; Howard Backer pitched " bucks for the table tubs" for the Children's Hospital; Anthony Portantino reminded all of the upcoming memorial service for the September the 11th tragedy which will be at memorial park; Daryal Gant told us of the last 2 programs for the year and that we will be "dark" on September 24th for our installation.

BIRTHDAYS & ANNIVERSARIES: Joining the Century Club for her Birthday was Sheila Cook; Don Corbett had a birthday but it sounded like he talked himself out of a fine but put in $5 for his new granddaughter; Karl Johnson had a $5 birthday; Melinda Thompson pledged $5; Ken Lowe celebrated his Anniversary up in Glacier Park and joined the Century Club.

HAPPY, SAD, GLAD, MAD BUCKS: Pres Elect Jim Ackland put in $5 as he was proud to say that our entire club has gone to an interclub with Clyde Hemphill attending 17 interclubs and Ed Moulton 15, Wow! Paul Westmoreland had a happy buck explaining he was in Dinuba last week and happy to not be there this week; Howard Backer put in "some kind of bucks"(about 20) for having his(and Rhoda's) picture in the News press last week which showed him in Alaska with a copy of the paper; Jack Dawson had a convoluted story about Model "A's" breaking down etc. and renting a trailer to tow it home and this story cost him $20; Elizabeth Calciano Georgeon had happy bucks for a story about her Grandson; Joan Peters had a sad 5 bucks as someone took the pearls off her badge; and of course Frosty Boyd had a pabst joke.

50/50 DRAWING: To enable him to give more happy bucks each week we let Frosty Boyd win the drawing.

THE PROGRAM: Introduced by our program chairman Daryal Gant, was our speaker Don Mazen. Don was a graduate of Pepperdine College before it moved to Malibu and became a University. He started his journalism career as sports editor of the Pepperdine newspaper. He went on to work for the L.A. Times as a copy boy and cub reporter. In 1958 he joined the La Cañada Valley Sun as a reporter and later became editor and was employed there for 39 years. Newsworthy events during his tenure included the Unification of the La Cañada School District in 1960 and the Cityhood of La Cañada Flintridge in 1976. Don is now a columnist with the LCF Outlook and celebrating his 50 years in journalism. He spoke to us on the writing of his book 'The History Of La Cañada Flintridge" and gave a brief review of each chapter. A most interesting talk and obviously many wanted to buy his book, which he just happened to have several copies of with him. Can't wait to read it.
