Bill Watts, Editor
OPENING: What can we say about
Shirley DeGrey at the piano who supplied us this day with melodies that stimulated our memory banks. And who led the song but of course
Ed Moulton who vibrated with energy (what is his secret?) as he helped us wade through "America".
HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: Standing at attention was Don Davidson
who led us in the Flag Salute; Glen Petit (after searching his pockets to find it) lend us in prayer.
Pres. Bob, Al Restivo & our speaker Dr. Joanne Pecuch, Psy.D. were the head table guests. We had an inter-club visitation from the Verdugo Hills Club with their President
Alda Jusay and 4 other members in attendance; a guest of Al Restivo, who was introduced by
Anthony Portantino, was Dr. Lee Stultzfus; a guest of
Elizabeth Calciano Georgeon was Eric Olberz; visiting from the Glendale Club was
Terry Buchanan. The Pres. Also welcomed our pianist for the day
Shirley DeGrey. Led by "Mr. Ed" a rousing "Hi Neighbor" aroused us.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: The Pres started the ball rolling by telling us about the Installation Banquet for our new (and old)
Lt. Governor, Joe Thompson, (as well as awards and club recognitions and installation of new district officers,) on September 15th at the La Cañada Country Club at the very reasonable price of $25 per head. He also told of the upcoming Happy Hour "Hamburger Night" for the Tournament of Roses on Friday, August 22 at 4918 Vineta, LCF. He went on with dates to remember: September 14th, Wine & Food Tasting, September 24th, Banquet to "demote" him (we will be dark at noon); next was Barry Riedel who was happy to announce the upcoming schedule of our Kiwanis Travelogue which looks great. He also said that 4 tickets will be sent to all members, you are required to buy 2 and he hopes you will sell the other 2 if not more. His motto "SST": (SELL SEASON TICKETS); contribute bucks to the "Children's Miracle Network" was requested by
Bachy Bachmayer; program chairman Daryal Gant announced programs till the end of our Kiwanis year; the President of the Verdugo Hills Club presented us with a "Certificate of Gratitude" for our large attendance at the Clubs installation;
Clyde Hemphill said to "SELL, SELL, SELL, tickets to the upcoming wine tasting on September 14th. Over 26 wineries (and some great ones) will pour the juice and he has 11 food vendors signed up and hopes to get to 20. This is our first try at this fund raising event to be held outdoors at Memorial park, so SELL tickets to your friends, enemies, neighbors, or whomever; a bargain at only $30.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT: Pres Bob was itching to fine Birthday & Anniversary Boys (or Girls) and picked on "old man"
Dave Spence. Before Dave could be fined he had a confession about how he has always admired
Jack Dawson and wanted to be like him. He found a 1932 Ford truck at an Antique store but I got confused as to whether he bought it or not, anyhow he celebrated his 67th Birthday by donating $100 to the Century Club;
Carl Christiansen confessed his 40th wedding anniversary and donated $10 (I think he was humiliated into more dough though);
Barry Riedel popped in happy bucks for being ahead of schedule with the programs(, and having the flyer out too), for the travelogue series and another buck as he was happy to see
Hal Thomas here; Howard Backer contributed a bucket of bucks for spending two weeks in Alaska and told a bear behind joke;
Jack Dawson dropped in $20 for the nice things Dave Spence said about him; Glen Petit
put in $45 to celebrate his 45th year in business. Then a joke telling session occurred started by
Frosty Boyd with contributions by Dr. Allen Perry Sr. &
Elizabeth Calciano Georgeon. Sgt at Arms Silvia Kirkorian collected all the bucks.
50/50 RAFFLE: Bachy Bachmayer did it again.
OUR PROGRAM: A warm introduction by Al Restivo was given to our speaker
Dr. Joanne Pecuch, Psy.D. She is a licensed Psychologist and licensed social worker. And specializes in Child Disorders. Each stage (and age) of a child's development was presented. From age 4 to 7 a child starts asking intellectual questions and they need to be answered. She stressed that a child should not be "programmed" and put on overload with to many events (such as soccer, then piano, etc. etc.). They need time to play and be themselves, after all you're only a kid once. A quiz was on each of our tables about stress in Children, which you were to answer T or F. I answered them all F (hope I was right).
EDITORS PEROGATIVE: A story I didn't get to tell about kids: "Little Johnny was telling his class about a big fire that he saw. He said the fireman was coming down the ladder and he was pregnant. There were lots of giggles. The teacher called him aside after class and said "Johnny, do you know what pregnant means, he said sure teacher, it means "with child"."
CLOSING: "Come on Kiwanis" led by Ed
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:
Membership Matters
As some of us learned a long time ago in places far, far, away, it never hurts to ask. If you think that a friend or acquaintance would be a good Kiwanian, please ask them to join you for lunch so you can tell them about what we do and the fun we have doing it. The Kiwanis mission is to "Serve the Children of the World" and we need to maintain a strong active Club to accomplish this mission.... Bob Wallace
