The La Kawañian

August 13, 2003
Matt Regan, Guest Editor

OPENING: Hal Crockett's better 1/2 , Martha, kept us entertained on the piano and Ed Moulton led us in, "You're a Grand Old Flag".

HEAD TABLE AND GUESTS: Patsy Christianson followed up the patriotic song with the salute to our flag. Sylvia Corcoran led us in a prayer that highlighted the virtues of faith. On the other end we had Clyde Hemphill, who stood in as our program chair and Karl Johnson as our program. Bruce Campbell from the News Press was in attendance. Ed Kent whose daughter was a big winner in our Soap Box Derby race let us know that in Akron we had won the award for "THE Outstanding Race City". Jim Ackland also brought a guest whose name I am about to butcher. I believe it was Mr. Yanz and he was with The Salvation Army. Hopefully Jim will get him to join so we can all learn his name.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Pres. Bob reminded all of us that we have our Wine and Gourmet Food Tasting fundraiser coming up on September 24th in Memorial Park. Along those lines Clyde said we will need to start selling tickets and Karl is looking for ads for the program. Bob also let us know that the Installation dinner will take place on September 24th. Paul Westmoreland brought to our attention a Soap Box Derby article that appeared in The LA Times. The article pointed out that some cheating that had taken place in the Akron race. It did not criticize the race for failure to catch it, just a failure to call it cheating. Paul reassured us that with diligent volunteers like Ed we do not have that problem. Bottom line the Foothills race is clean and honest! Paul then touched on the membership drive The Jim and Daryal leagues are tied with Bob's bringing up the rear. We are doing a good job with guests and a poor job converting them to members. Keeping with that theme, a message from our President;
MEMBERSHIP MATTERS

Are you doing your share to recruit new members? Everyone in the Club needs to be an aggressive recruiter of potential members. The Club needs to continue to add members in order to maintain our capability to serve the community and in particular the children of the community. So please step up and do your share.

HAPPY, SAD OR OTHER BUCKS: Pat Flynn was the secret greeter so everyone that did not shake his hand made a contribution. Depending on your view Frosty told us a clean/ dirty joke. Jack Dawson  stole a whiskey joke from Daryal. Patsy put in $10 for all the Kiwanis hugs she missed; I did not know we were that kind of a club. Clyde put in a dollar for Diane and her hard work on the Summer Social. Ed made a contribution for the work Ed Kent put in our race. George put in five for the social he missed. Diane was bashful and spread credit around. She also explained the trials and tribulations of purchasing a karaoke machine. She also let us know that when Jack was in college he did not care to keep up with the music trends of the day. Bob Martin asked us how many had gone to the Key Club car wash and put in ten for his wonderful trip home to Louisiana. Dick DeGrey said that he gave $25 to the car wash because they went up a cleaned his daughter's car that had been egged. Jack Dawson said he passed because he did not know if they would have wanted to wash the BBQ. Don Davidson joined the Century Club for his Birthday and 58th Wedding anniversary.

50/50 RAFFLE: Won by Frosty, he claimed to be a first time winner.

THE PROGRAM: Introduced by Clyde Hemphill was our very own Karl Johnson. Karl spoke on the importance of teaching younger people about money. He told us that two of his idols were Sam Walton and Warren Buffet. Unfortunately he did not give out any free samples.
