HAPPY JULY FOURTH!
OPENING: Shirley DeGrey
made fireworks at the piano as she entertained Kiwanians as they made short work of their lunch. "Mr. Firecracker",
Ed Moulton paraded his 4th of July tie around the room as he led us in a rousing "The Star Spangled Banner"
HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: A Flag Salute celebrating the birth of our Nation was given by
Al Restivo and Dick DeGrey read a poem by his favorite poet followed by a prayer.
Pres Bob, Bob Martin & Matt Regan were the head table guests along with our speaker
Manny Medrano. Guests included the Rev. John Day (soon to be installed as a new member);
Lisa Fredeem, from Montrose Travel, a guest of Mary Gant; Deborah Fentress
was a guest of Diane DellaValle, and we also welcomed
Harriett Hammons along with 4 members of the working "crew" at Descanso Gardens who each gave a brief job description. The meeting was started early to give school board members
Jinny Dilbeck & Andy Beatie time to make their pitch for much needed funds to keep the La Cañada School District from cutting many programs including the plumber. They urged everyone to contribute $464 to the School District whether you have kids in school or not. The money is needed prior to the end of July.
NEW MEMBER INSTALLATION: The Rev. John Day was introduced by
President Bob Wallace (his sponsor) who told of John's many accomplishments including being voted "pastor of the year" last year. I remember when John spoke at our club and told us of his heart breaking work at the site of the 9-11 disaster.
Membership Chairman Paul Westmoreland did his usual great job in installing John who of course was loaded down with all the usual new member stuff.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: The Pres said the Board Meeting was moved to next Thursday and would be at his house;
Jim Ackland said that because of our recent sadness over the loss of two members we did not attend the scheduled inter-clubs, however your next opportunity to attend (especially if you still have that nasty red circle of your badge) is July 9th at the A.M. Club and again on July 11th at Glendale Kiwanis. He thanked all for their inter club attendance and hoped that those who haven't "inter-clubbed" this year would please do it now.
Wow! Where did the time go? No Fines, No Secret Greeter, No Happy, Sad or other bucks, and it was now time for the Raffle.
50/50 RAFFLE: And the winner was Bill Wiederkehr who sells tickets next week.
THE PROGRAM: Our program chairman Daryal Gant introduced our speaker Channel 4 newsman,
Manny Medrano speaking on "Film at 11, Views & Reflections". Manny told of his childhood in West Texas where they lived in poverty
and his determination to make good. He graduated with a Law Degree from Harvard and was a Federal Prosecutor for 13 years and never lost a case. He became a legal analyst for Channel 4 and among other things he told of many amusing
antidotes. He won an Emmy for his coverage of the O.J. Simpson murder trail and has won numerous other awards. He is a fantastic motivational speaker and spoke for nearly 45 minutes. A truly enjoyable speaker, he was greeted with a standing ovation.
