The
La Kawañian
June
25, 2003
Bill Watts, Editor
sparkywatts01@cs.com
OPENING: Martha made melodic magic and she meandered over the piano keys. Ed Moulton was like "a pea on a hot griddle" (as my Mom used to say) as he bounced us through "America The Beautiful".
HEAD TABLE & GUESTS: The head table consisted of Bill Watts, Pres Bob, Bachy Bachmayer, & Ken
Lowe. The Flag salute was given by "the newest Eagle Scout" and the invocation by
Bill Watts included a reading, in memory of Phil
Anderson, of John 3:16, followed by a prayer. A moment of silence in honor of Phil preceded the invocation. A guest of
Anthony Portantino was Laura Olassco and the Pres himself greeted
Shirley DeGray. As this was "Scout Recognition Day" each scout (Boy & Girl's) introduced themselves and their parent (s) who accompanied them.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Paul Westmoreland said he would be giving a talk at the Highland Park Kiwanis about the Soap Box Derby (who not go and find out what we did?), he also reported on the Membership Drive and that
Daryal Gant's team was in first place with Jim Ackland's team close behind. Once again
Diane DellaValle told of the upcoming Jazz at Kiwanis program this Saturday June 28th, you can still buy tickets for $20 or pay $25 at the door. She said we have sent $450 to the Glendale Kiwanis and that we will get $230 back;
Daryal Gant told us about upcoming programs. Next week is a great program entitled "News at 11" which he hopes all will attend;
Bachy Bachmayer plugged the table tubs for the Children's Hospital.
HAPPY, SAD, GLAD BUCKS & ANNIVERSARIES & BIRTHDAYS: The Pres. Tried to eke out bucks from
Karl Johnson for this Birthday but Karl said "it's my Anniversary, not Birthday", so for 4 years of marital bliss he popped in another buck for luck and donated $5;
Anthony Portantino had happy and sad bucks, happy that the City Council had a short first budget session but sad they were still $4 million over budget;
Patsy Christianson (you remember her) was happy to be back after a long absence;
Jack Dawson had a happy buck for the scouts; Mary Gant was happy for her and
Clyde Hemphill that the planning for the September wine tasting event was going well;
Sookie Matthews was happy that she sold 3 houses this week
;Howard Backer was going to put in a buck for the Scouts but he didn't have any change so he dropped in a $2 bill;
Jim Reynolds was happy to be back after a 22 day vacation in Europe and joined the Century Club;
Frosty Boyd was happy for the Scouts and of course snuck in a joke. The Pres let us off lightly as there were no fines or Secret Greeter.
50/50 RAFFLE: Was won by Tom Stafford.
THE PROGRAM: Ken Lowe presented all the Boy and Girl scouts and lined they all up at the front of the room. He had each one tell of their accomplishments, future plans, and "unusual" moments in scouting. We also met all the Mom's & Dad's in attendance. He presented each scout with a Certificate of Achievement. Many questions were fielded from the audience as well as "war stories" about when they were a scout. A bunch of great young men & women and we are proud to honor them today.
IN MEMORIAN: Last Week death took a great man from our midst,
Rev. Phillip Anderson. Phil will long be remembered, not only as a Past President and great Kiwanian, but as a friend who had a wonderful sense of humor and always a kind word to say. He said he taught his wife
Pat how to be a good President of Kiwanis and obviously he did a great job. His premature departure from our Earth is a great loss to the Community as well as to our club. Phil served as senior minister of the Church Of The Lighted Window for over 22 years where he gave his Thanksgiving sermons dressed as a Pilgrim. He was in big demand for his invocations as they were always meaningful as well as humorous. Phil, we will miss your presence but we know you had an "E" ticket to heaven and your spirit will be with us always. Our prayers are with Pat and the family.
(Services for Phil will be on June 27th, 2003 at 2 pm at the Church of The Lighted Window, donations requested to be to the Church of The Lighted Window Memorial Fund)
